I visited this club with family at christmas time and was really impressed…read more The club is clean and really well kept with the decor being a little dated as per most social and conservative clubs but still it has a very nice and friendly atmosphere and we had a really enjoyable evening. The bar has a really good selection of drinks at really competetive prices. the staff in here are really efficient and freindly and really do make the place an enjoyable place to spend a quiet evening. Theres often live entertainment which is normally dire but then its also either free or very cheap so thats fair enough. The club is well situated within a housing area and is well worth a visit.

It's quite shabby in an 80s way but it's got a kind of charm to it. It's got a few different monthly nights. One is 80s/90s hip hop, another northern soul and also a psychedelic night. The night I went to was Home on the Range (geddit!) which is the last Friday of the month and "is a night of soul, funk, hip hop, house, reggae and lots in-between for the dancefloor hungry" according to the people that run it. I had a great time and everyone was totally up for dancing. Actually with the dated function room and slightly older crowd it felt like we'd crashed a wedding but nobody minded as they were all too busy dancing. They really did dance hard, it felt like a very sweaty night in Ibiza. And I was reminded when they played some house music that this is the generation that invented clubbing. It's also cheap. It's a fiver to get in. Then I paid another fiver for a pint of Heineken and a can of red stripe. Yes to social club prices! They also let you bring your glass of beer outside(!) when you need to cool down at the picnic tables. The woman on the ticket desk said when I asked "there's not that many rules around here". Probably because the crowd came to dance and have a good time. I'm going back soon.

The Irish Association Social Club is a large building in the centre of Chorlton and the clue is in the name. This is the place where the older Irish community in Manchester's suburbs congregates and downstairs is a large bar and seated area. I am more familiar with the function room upstairs though which is a large space that has recently undergone a makeover. Now it is light and bright with a small stage and a bar. Drinks prices are such a revelation here for those used to pricey city centre watering holes. In the latter, there is little change out of £10 for only one drink, but in the Irish Association club for the same money I can down three rum and cokes and still have a couple pounds to line my pockets with. This is wondeful! I would encourage any one who is looking for a great venue to host a bash for 100 people or so, to book here. Hire charges are minimal, staff are friendly and alcohol is inexpensive.

Personally I would not choose Comrades for a celebration of mine; it's old and dark and I just don't feel it reflects the imporatance of an occassion such as a wedding-the receptions of which are held here. The dance floor is small, the bar is small, and while there is ample seating, the whole place just feels claustrophobic and depressing. I think it's quite cheap to hire and is convenient for locals but.. it's nthing special
