Too bad she's so anal cuz they do host some alright bands and things once in a while but the rep there is its a dive. Even being the only bar around people still wont go there. This emerging music festival takes place 8hrs north of Montreal, officially the furthest north I've ever been, in copper-capital Rouyn-Noranda in Abitibi. The heart of the fest is a couple of city blocks which, this year, was all hung high with yellow, blue, and red umbrellas; a massive set of glowing letters sat in the street spelling out FME around a robot face as tall as me made of circuit boards, breathing fire. Most of the team behind the fest are local artists who have been creating this moment together for ten years and you feel it everywhere in the craft and detail and love. And in the attendance - every show I wandered into had a crowd. The festival feels joyfully embraced by the town. At the press dinner (complete with 20 piglets roasting on a kind of carnival of fire, and the Hay Babies playing in the back of a truck) I got to chat with a sound tech from the fest who comes up from Montreal for it every year. He said: you drive in the woods to get here and when you do everything behind you drops away, and the streets are full of a celebration and of varieties of music that are somehow outside of space and time. That's what it felt like, and all the people who beamed at me and said Ohhh FME!!!! were right and I hope I get back there next year, and maybe I'll see you there!
