Mind you, El Milenario was my first time officially trying Oaxacan food (it was our first day in the city) so the bar was pretty high. After an extended back and forth with our waiter over what we were ordering (my Spanish wasn't as good as I thought, I'm afraid) we got our order in, and sat down to await the our first taste of Oaxacan gastronomy. We each got the black molé and a tlayuda to share, and thoroughly enjoyed each of them. My cousins say that El Milenario has some of the best black molé Oaxaca state, and while I only tried one other black molé during my visit, I'd venture to agree. Aesthetically the restaurant was charming, and definitely reminiscent of a more traditional Mexican establishment. I found that most higher end Oaxacan restaurants in the city pursue something of a minimal-modern look, coupled with traditional Mexican colors and an extensive use of local flora. It's a beautiful aesthetic, but El Milenario has retained a more traditional, older Mexican style. Lots of rough tile, wood, and (in a charming way) walls that definitely could use a coat of paint.

He insisted I eat one before I leave. So that's how I ended up at tlayudas el negro. I had three choices of meat, the tasajo is a tougher meat so I decided to get one with cecina. Other options were costilla -ribs or chorizo. I was able to modify it and have it with very little cheese and I asked if they could not fry it too much. I ordered the enmolada for 120 pesos. The mole was good but it had a very thin layer of it, tiny pieces of meat couldn't taste the flavor and the tlayuda was extra crispy and burnt but it didn't bother me that much but I didn't enjoy this dish. I'm glad I tried it and you may like it. If you get a chance try one from the Mercado or the street vendors. If your gut can handle it. What I really liked was the garnish on top! Yes just this one or two herb pieces was delicious. It gave the food such a distinct flavor I liked the aftertaste. The herb is called chipeche. Service was great and there's live music, someone was playing the violin. I will not be back but you should try it. If you're a drinker I think you have a good chance of enjoying the food and atmosphere.

A great item to order to try a bunch of finger foods from this region was the Botana Zandunga, which came with garnachas (mini tortillas topped with beef, salsa, onions, cheese, pickled cabbage), molotes de platano (plantain fritters stuffed with cheese/cream), empanadas (corn tortillas stuffed with beef), tamal de elote (sweet corn tamal), tamalito de cambray (tamal filled with beef stew), bolitas de queso (fried cheese balls), tacos dorados de cochito (fried rolled tacos stuffed with pork), and pico de gallo (chopped tomatoes/onions/cilantro topped with dried shrimp). Each of these items was unique in flavor and texture, and it was fun to try so many different little bites! Next, the Ensalada Zandunga was a simple salad of lettuce, tomate, cheese, basil, and a berry vinaigrette. We also had two local main dishes--the Cochito Horeneado were pork ribs baked in an ancho chile adobo, served with a spiced potato puree and corn tortillas; and the Estofado del Istmo was a shredded beef stew cooked with fruits, served with potato puree, pan bollo (toasted bread), and queso mantequilla (butter cheese). La Biznaga was an unexpected and wonderful find on our last night in Oaxaca. We had an early start…read moreto the airport the following morning and decided to look for something closer to our place, which was about a 10 minute walk north of Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman. La Biznaga was just two blocks away. The kind owner greeted and sat us and enthusiastically recommended the Lo'xicha, a plantain tamale wrapped in hierbasanta over mushroom adobo. Unfortunately, they were out for the night and I ordered the Mogo Mogo instead, rolled plantains, fried, and coated in amaranth and placed on a bed of salsa de frijol. It almost made me okay missing the Lo'xicha, which is saying a lot b/c I love tamales. The mogo mogo was done well and a worthy and memorable last meal in a fantastic city. All in all, the menu at La Bignaga was unlike any other menu we'd seen during our time in Oaxaca. Their Facebook page describes it as Mestizo food, a mix of Spanish, Mexican, and Mayan influences. It had some of the foundations of other foods we had tasted during the week but deviated in really pleasant and exciting ways. The only con was the place only took cash which we were short of it being our last night. It prevented us from exploring more of their menu. Something to take note of for next time as Oaxaca and La Biznaga are worth a return visit.
