Make sure you listen to their website when it says to pack light, you really do have to climb up a lot of stairs to get to your room that are very narrow and it is pretty much impossible to do if you have a large suitcase.

My guess is that Varenna is a magnet for American destination weddings, which probably explains why parts of these Hotels' reservation books were already full, even when we inquired many months in advance. The Albergo Milano is located right in the old town and up. It looks very romantic and complete with killer views from the balcony.

We choose Villa Cipressi because it was closer. It was very gorgeous, we took plenty of photos, enjoyed beautiful lake view seating in a nice shade. Walk from ferry its very simple but its uphill so bring water with you. We went in September and still it was very hot and sunny. There is not so much shade there either. Also you can hike to Castello di Vezio to get beautiful view of the village but be aware it's very steep. It takes around 40 minutes. Also while walking you will see beautiful narrow streets, water views , little church and small stores & restaurants. After that we hoped on other ferry to go to Menaggio. You can visit all of these places within a 1 day like we did.

This will be the most glowing 3 star review ever…read more My wife and decided (at the last minute) to book an Italian getaway on Lake Como. However, since August is considered peak season around these parts, finding anything decent was nearly impossible. However after days of searching, I found the Beretta had the dates we needed. This is truly a 1 star property, but what it lacks in luxury it makes up for location and comfort. The hotel is located in Parledo walking distance to the beautiful town of Varenna. It's just a short four minute walk from the train station. The lobby is located in the bar area. It's not staffed 24/7, so you may have to wait upon arrival before checking in. If you arrive after 8:00PM, you will need to call the number listed on the door. After checking in we were shown to our room (number 5). The room is very basic, nothing swanky at all, but we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Our room had a nice balance which had a decent view of the lake and makes for a nice place to sit and sip on coffee in the morning and wine in the evening. The location is nice as it's less than a 5 minute walk into the heart of Varenna where you will find a wide range of eateries. The hotel is perfect for those traveling on a tight budget and would rather spend their money on excursions etc. would I stay here again? For the price I absolute would.

[Just fyi, to reach the ferry, walk down the hill, take the steps to the right, walk toward the lake and turn left. You can't miss the ticket office. To visit Varenna (which is lovely) continue past the boat ramp, follow the waterside walkway and take a Contrada up to the main square or stay on the waterside to enjoy the shops and cafes there.] The train station is older and has 2 tracks. We take the regional train from Milan which returns on track#2. If you get to the station early there is a small indoor waiting area off the main platform with seats and arrivals board, or sit outside on the few benches available there. You could also enjoy a beverage in the bar but we aware: the bathroom, located in a separate building, is not a place for a lady. Bring your own TP and sanitary hand wipes and be prepared to hover. Honestly, the train bathroom is a better choice.
