    Performance dancers with traditional attire

What an extraordinary experience. The hospitality was off the charts. The food was authentic and delicious enough to satisfy our group of locals and out of towners. Highlights were the adobo, pancit with chicken liver, turon and other sweet treats. Appreciate that they had other options like seafood paella and rib eye steak and potatoes. The cultural performance was the true highlight with excellent performers and musicians. Lastly, the opportunity for your party to take a pic with the dancers and shout out to your group table make this a place I will always recommend. Especially since it is right across the street from San Agustin. Bravo to the whole Barbara's staff and thanks for making our lunch so special!

We had a sudden vacation to the Philippines for business and pleasure and since the event is going to be at the Manila Cathedral, we stayed at the Manila Hotel. Of course, we had a few days to explore the area, Intramuros and Luneta Park was nearby so we took time to visit these widely renowned destinations, too. Much of the folks we spoke about fine dining pointed us to Barbara's Restaurant so off we go! We were welcomed by a group playing and singing Filipino and English songs. Wow, I requested some and they belted it out like a 45 playing on my old turn table. We ordered sisig, fish soup (milkfish), veggies (pinakbet) and a large fried pork leg (Crispy Pata). These came with dipping sauces and steamed rice. The milkfish soup was sour and fishy but blended in with my steamed rice, the sisig was tender pieces of meat and was crunchy and very tender while the pork leg was just about right. All these blended like a collaboration of tastes, bringing me back to the old days, in my 20's earning my first scholarship to study in the U.S., real very memorable. We also had a rare view of a Flamenco dance and a personal welcome by Barbara herself! My visit to Barbara's featuring a welcome by Barbara was more than just food but also a memory lane walk to the time of Spain's colonial rule of the Philippines. So, if you happen to be in the Philippines as a visitor or just coming back, dine at Barbara's and enjoy what you've missed or smell the real aroma of fine dining.

There's something so special about dining in a restored Spanish-era mansion like Casa Manila. It's like stepping back in time!

With relatives and friends during a trip to the PI and we decided to get out of the hear and have lunch. When entering, I observed the Spanish decor. Food was great! The most memorable moment was when the 3 man band approached the tables singing songs by request. They did awesome playing songs on the spot! Good times!

This is a great place to bring visitors new to the Philippines. The price was reasonable for a buffet of tasty traditional dishes, music, and an engaging cultural dance show. Reserve in advance for the dinner show. The restaurant is on the second floor of a reproduced Spanish colonial building, so there is a long stairway (no elevator for those needing accessibility).

Barbara's was one of my most favorite moments during my entire vacay in the Philippines! Here's why! I had no idea what Barbara's was prior to my visit. My family was touring around Intramuros and we stopped at San Agustin Church where my parents got married. I was getting cranky at this point in the day and I didn't want to go down to visit the church LOL anyway, I had to use the bathroom so I went across the street to Barbara's. Right when I walked in the place looked so familiar... I realized this is the restaurant where the movie "Last Night" with Piolo Pascual and Toni Gonzaga was filmed! I literally screamed and started fangirling once I figured it out! "Last Night" is one of my favorite Filipino movies so if you haven't seen it, make sure to check it out. I love Piolo! I think he's one of the handsomest Filipino men out there! HA HA I also really like Toni! I thought Barbara's was a fake restaurant that they made up for the movie, so imagine my surprise when I found out it was real! Also, I had no idea it's an iconic restaurant in the Philippines! It's a heritage restaurant and even the employees are dressed up in traditional costume. Well I'll be damned! I made my family get a quick meryenda here! Barbara's has a restaurant, a patio cafe, and a small store. I opted to sit in their patio since that's where the movie was filmed hehe. I ordered Mais Con Hielo which was good and refreshing! This place put me in such a good mood! I would love to come back here in the future and go on a romantic date on the patio :D Please do yourself a favor and put Barbara's at the top of your Philippines Itinerary!

    Lunchtime Serenade

It's been a long time since I was last in the Philippines, some 16 years ago, and I was excited to come back as part of a tour group, which allowed me to learn more about my heritage. Riding on a coach (which, by the way, I was mystified when the driver maneuvered a huge bus around the tight streets of Manila!), I was mesmerized by the sights of Intramuros, the oldest district in Manila at the time of the Spanish Colonial Period. Barbara's is located near San Agustin Church, in fact, right across from it, and up a flight of stairs. On the day we visited, lunch was buffet and featured Filipino food - rice, pancit, adobo, lechon, chicken, vegetables, and dessert. For me, in addition to the food, the highlight was the music - three guys walking around the dining room serenading guests with Filipino classics as well as other popular songs.

Then the highlight was the stuffed chicken relleno; juicy, packed with chorizo goodness, and that gravy just tied it all together. Ended with the famous sampaguita ice cream--never had anything like it, floral and refreshing in the best way, like eating flowers but in dessert form. Nothing earth shaking in terms of flavors, but everything tasted familiar - the way it should. I love this place for that. I'm not a big fan of fusion and deconstructed food dishes. Apart from the good comfort food, what will make me return again and again to this place are the staff and the ambiance. - the staff - some of them have been with the Legarda family since tita Moning was alive. There was even a brochure write-up introducing all the staff to the guests. I love how the owner is goving much credit and appreciation to the staff. As a result, the staff were really very warm towards the guests. It wasn't just professional courtesy. This isn't so for La Cocina. One could still feel the heart and soul of the home as it once housed the Legarda family. It wasn't a restaurant in a shell structure of an old house. The restaurant-cum-ancestral house offers patrons a dining experience like no other. To start things off, you are given a tour of the mansion and told tidbits and stories pertaining to the Legarda family. The tour starts in the first floor and you gradually make your way up where you'll eventually be led to the dining area. Describing it as extravagant and exquisite is putting it mildly. There are rose petals strewn about the length of your table. There are literal bells you can pick up and ring to get the attention of the help. The whole experience is surreal. The food itself isn't bad. It's obviously inclined towards Spanish fare given the Legarda family's heritage. It's not the best though. Upon entering ...its like you just step back in time, from decors and furnitures its really a feel of the past... somewhat eirie to me. Theres so much good foods from the menu, they actually have silvanas for the dessert. Silvanas(Sylvanas) cookie version of sansrival,a frozen cookie consisting of layer of buttercream sandwiched by two cashew- mirengue wafers and coated with cookie crumps. Appez: We ordered Ukoy or squash fritters dipping sauce is vinigar with crushed garlic and red chilli, for me this one is just ordinary maybe because I usually cook this at home and mine is an all out ukoy really yummy though. We actually ordered a lot so I can try most of the dishes but the one that really a bomb was the Paella Negra or also known as the arroz negra, its a dish originated from Valencia Spain main ingredient is the squid and its ink,it also has clams, shrimp and some other seafood.::mixed with cooked rice and baked, the final product is black in color when served. I was blown away by this one so much flavor into it,so much meat from the sea,the color is kinda scary but when you taste it olala the best. Huge serving in here. We got fresh buko juice and other freshly squeezed fruit juices. For our dessert Halo-halo or ice catchang and we tried their silvanas both were so delish that you wish to eat more in every bite. A different place to dine in,pateo seating is also available, take out as well, busy busy place because its located just opposite of a morethan century old catholic church named San Agustine. Good for group and kids friendly, wash room is not the cleanest place on earth but not dirty though. Excellent service well somewhat slow because it was a busy dinner time when we came by. I would like to revisit this place when i will be back to the Philippines. I also recommend this place specially for foreigners who love to try the kind of cuisine they serve and to feel the ambiance of an old restaurant that still operational. I cant review the pricing of foods in here because my brother paid for everything and I havent seen the bill... 5 star rating based in interior designs and quality of foods,by the way its not easy to find a parking paid or free... busy all the time and its location is in the heart of intramuros Manila. Needless to say, during my November, 2024 vacation, I had to stop by here for a snack or meal which occurred on the evening of Wednesday, the 13th. Established in 1936, The Aristocrat is one of the oldest restaurants in Manila and historic landmark recognised by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines with a marker at this original location on Roxas Boulevard, recognizing its contribution to Philippine culinary history. An iconic spot famed for its homestyle Filipino delights like Lumpiang Shangahi (₱415), Crispy Pata (₱975), and Halo-halo (Blanco ₱160, Regular ₱180, and Specia l₱220), the long-loved brand has won the hearts of Filipinos across the country and is still a favourite up to this day. Situated in the vibrant Malate district, conveniently on Roxas Boulevard, the venue offers diners a picturesque view of Manila Bay, which adds to its charm. The place also has ample parking in the private lot and the interior design is clean and well-maintained. With the onsite bakeshop and store, bright lighting, and 24-hour service, The Aristocrat captures diner vibes while welcoming guests to a warm family-style setting with tables grouped together. Showcasing the best of Filipino culinary culture, the extensive menu at Aristocrat boasts bold, lively flavours served in satisfying portions. Signature dishes include the celebrated Chicken BBQ & Java Rice combination, widely considered "the best chicken barbecue in town," and the iconic Aristocrat Adobo Flying Saucer (₱190), a toasted, circular bread pocket filled with savoury chicken adobo. Each dish is thoughtfully presented and every bite serves as a rich celebration of Filipino cuisine. Below are some of what we ordered at my most recent visit: Fresh Lumpiang Ubod (₱175) - This was Uncle Bolo's order. He enjoyed the shredded ubod (heart of palm) sautéed with pork and shrimp, perfectly wrapped and generously poured with the savoury-sweet and thick peanut sauce topped with ground peanuts and fresh garlic. Crab & Corn Soup (₱98) - The thick, creamy broth filled with sweet corn kernels and shredded delicate crab meat was enjoyed for its warm, savoury flavor, mirroring traditional Filipino-Chinese comfort food. Fried Lumpiang Ubod (₱188) - I'm not a fan of lumpiang ubod, but those who ate this starter enjoyed the crispy texture of the eggroll, especially paired with the spiced vinegar. Gulaman at Sago (₱98) - The Filipino sweet, thirst-quenching iced beverage of gelatin cubes with chewy tapioca pearls in a brown sugar syrup was refreshing and beautiful in presentation. Kare Kare (₱925) - Each spoonful of this classic peanut-forward stew of beef and vegetables was full of flavour. Bistek Tagalog (₱450) - This classic, comforting rendition of the Filipino beef steak, featuring thinly sliced lean beef marinated in savoury soy sauce and tangy calamansi juice and topped with caramelized white onions was impressively tasty and tender. Pinakbet na Baboy (₱330) - This dish featuring a medley of vegetables - such as eggplant, green beans, and bittern melon - and pork sautéed in a savoury shrimp paste is one of Mom's favourites. Unfortunately, she wasn't super impressed with Aristocrat's version. Ginataang Laing (₱225) - This Filipino comfort dish of taro leaves and pork bits cooked in coconut milk and topped with shrimp and siling labuya (small, fiery chili pepper cultivar) was richly creamy, slightly spicy and deeply aromatic. 3-PC Chicken Barbecue (₱345) - This is Aristocrat's iconic dish, often cited as the flagship meal of the legendary Manila-based establishment. Their famous Chicken Barbecue is composed of three pieces of chicken (typically drumsticks and/or leg/thigh cuts) that are marinated, skewered, and grilled to a tender, juicy, and smoky finish. Served with Java Rice (a bright yellow-orange-coloured, savoury rice) and homemade Atsara (a Filipino pickled dish made from grated unripe green papaya) both of which bring out the tastiness of the smoky chicken. Pork Barbecue (₱300) - Two sticks of tender, marinated pork skewers grilled to perfection, typically served with Java Rice and Atsara. Dalyn replaced the Java Rice for white rice to complement the sweet, smoky bites of pork. Fresh Green Mango Shake (₱180) - My shake of fresh succulent green mango fruit blended with light syrup and crushed ice was a perfect balance of tangy and sweet - YUM! THE Aristocrat RESTAURANT's warm, polite and attentive service with nostalgic ambiance and delectable, well-presented dishes have made the establishment a beloved spot for both locals and tourists alike, a must-visit for the heart and soul of authentic Filipino fare.

Everything tasted like someone's lola spent hours perfecting it: bold flavors, generous portions, nothing skimpy. The staff hustled hard even with the late crowd, refilling calamansi juice without us asking and keeping things warm and welcoming. The location of the original branch is a bit hard to reach specially if you don't have your own car but I still recommend the said place. It's located in the old escolta which used to be the center of commerce in old Manila. This is the Ayala Center of BGC of Spanish times.
