However, when we checked in, toilet was dirty and the room smelled like sewage. Someone came to clean it. However, we noticed that after flushing the toilet, dirty water would seep back into the toilet bowl over the course of a few minutes. We notified the staff the following day, and they sent someone to fix it while we were out. However, the problem persisted when we returned to our room later that day. We notified them again, and they offered us another room. So I went to talk to my wife about their offer. While we were discussing what to do, someone knocked on our door saying they wanted to look at the toilet. We decided to wait and see if they could fix the toilet before making our decision. However, in the meantime, they gave the other room to someone else. The person said he found a plastic bag in the septic tank, and that that was the cause of the problem. We thought all would be well, and stayed a third night. The following day, we noticed that the same problem occurred. We woke up to a dirty toilet bowl and smell of sewage. At this point we had to leave for our scheduled touring, and when we returned we informed the hotel that we would be leaving. When we returned home we contacted them asking if they would consider refunding us for two nights stay. We had paid for six nights total, stayed 3 nights, and since we checked out late before the 4th night, we thought this would be a reasonable compromise. We were informed that because they offered us another room, and because the toilet was "spotless" they would not be offering a refund. I will be posting a photo of their "spotless" toilet and of the mold and mildew we found in their bathrooms. It's so gross I don't know if TripAdvisor will even approve of it being posted. I understand that this is business from their point of view. For us, it made our holiday less enjoyable, but fortunately we were able to get a room at the Hilton which I highly recommend. I hope the person who e-mailed me, her name is Anna, is treated in the same way if she ever travels to a foreign country and has the same fortune with her bathrooms.

Taxis or public transport are necessary to get anywhere. Rooms: While larger than most European hotel rooms, these are in desperate need of attention, the decor is extremely outdated and there is visible wear and tear. The general vibe is a run down college dorm. The beds are not very comfortable and the bedding is very basic. The air conditioning units do not work. If you are visiting from the US, this alone could be a dealbreaker. Our group had three rooms and two had AC issues, none were fully resolved. Some rooms include an iron and ironing board (also unusual plus for European hotels) and a Nespresso machine. Service: The staff is ok. Not overly proactive but also limited by the system in which they operate. On day 1, we visited the front desk to mention the issues with the AC. The agent said they would have a technician check it the following day. It didn't happen. We visited the front desk again, spoke with the same agent. She initially forgot our initial conversation but luckily she had written down the request. She mentioned the technician didn't come but they would address it the following day. She tried doing a room change but the hotel was full so instead we got an oscillating fan to help alleviate the AC situation. There is a little cafe on the property but we didn't eat or order there so I can't comment on it but there were a lot of markets and produce stands within a very short walk of the property. There was also a couple of tapas bars that were in the proximity too. Within a 10 minute walk, there was a nice little plaza with a lot of shops, restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops. This is where everyone in the area gathers at night to meet, eat, talk, smoke and drink. Very cool place and everyone here were pretty much local. I think we were the only tourists but we were received very well and people are generally friendly. The front desk staff was extremely helpful with all of our questions about the surrounding area, places to eat and taking the metro to get around. They do have wifi but it's very weak and slow just like the rest of Barcelona. My advice is to sit in the lobby if you need to access the internet as it was slow for us on the 4th floor. The rooms are not as expensive as places in the downtown area and there is a metro station that's a 5 minute walk away. If you plan this right, you can save a ton of money. We bought a 3-day pass for the metro and the room and pass were way cheaper than staying in expensive hotels. Left a lot of residual cash for dining, shopping and bus tours.
