The Bare Grills Burger - 1st June 2015.
    Jon W.

It's pretty decent here. I think it's fairly new, so they don't quite have the hang of the smoking yet (in my opinion) when compared to other smokehouses I've been to. They market themselves more as a burger joint though, so the smoked items are just a bonus. I liked the overall feel of the place, friendly staff and a good, small menu. I had the Bare Grill Burger and a side of burnt ends. I don't they were traditional burnt ends, they seemed just like shredded brisket soaked in BBQ sauce.. But they tasted nice. If you want fries you need to pay an additional £2.50 on top. That always annoys me, of course I want fries. Add that in to the cost of the burger. Then an £11 burger that sounds reasonable turns in to a £13.50 meal, which is a lot for a burger and fries. It's like buying a roast dinner but if you want the potatoes you have to pay £2 extra. You can't have one without the other, in my opinion anyway. I'll be back many times I'm sure, and I look forward to seeing (and tasting) them improve as they go along. If you like BBQ and burgers, definitely give this place a whirl. Cheers.

Burgers from the freezer. Nothing on the menu relates to a smoke house or pit grill. More like after school 'quick tea' from the 90's

This was my fifth visit to one of my favourite restaurants. I deliberately travel out of my way to…read moreeat here. The restaurant has a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere and serves up an American-style BBQ menu. Portion sizes are big and the quality of the meat is never in doubt. On this visit I discovered their chicken wings, which have to be the best chicken wings I've had in the UK, and I'm struggling to remember any wings sampled in the U.S. that would beat them! The secret is definitely in the coating - I'm just gutted I didn't discover them sooner! Their southern fried chicken burger is my favourite burger from here, however unfortunately on this occasion they served it with blue cheese on top rather than the regular cheese I asked for. No problem though, they were more than happy to make a fresh burger which was just as delicious as always. The Surf, Bird & Turf Combo and BBQ Ribs are also great choices. My biggest plus about this place though is their fries; the best fries I've ever eaten. Consistently awesome on every visit, beautifully crispy and well-seasoned. Big 5 stars from me as I've had 5 fantastic meals here, and they have Brahma on tap which is a bonus.

Since Spitfire BBQ opened on the harbour I have visited several times, and now it's found its feet,…read morethere's a lot to recommend. The Ambience. It's a South African BBQ hybrid, and it has a good relaxed feel. Dark wood, and low lighting. If smoking was allowed inside, there'd be a hazy glow to the place that would be perfect. And I don't even smoke. The Drinks. They do smoked cocktails. They're arguably marmite, but I love them. (Just so we're clear, they're not marmite cocktails. You just either love them or hate them.) I had a smoked old fashioned the first time I visited, and it tasted great. I love anything smoked, so smoked cocktails were new to me. The smoked marguerita is even more smoky - arguably too smoky for some, but it all depends on your taste preference. The Food. The second time I visited I had one of the burgers. Immense, with a literal bucket of fries, I was loving it. Until my friend's rack of ribs arrived. A slab of meat, glistening and glazed. I didn't make the same mistake when I visited last night. If you've only ever had baby back ribs or ribs at home and are left feeling disappointed at the meat/bone ratio, relax. There's more meat here than you know what to do. I shared the medium ribs with a friend (£14.95) and, with fries, onion rings, and smoked beans, was more than enough. I am hesitant as to whether the sides were made on site, but you go to Spitfire BBQ for the ribs. The sides are just to break up the meat. If you have a hankering for meat, then head to Spitfire BBQ. They do meat well.

As others have noted, the brisket is very, very undercooked, and stringy, and customers struggle to…read morechew it. Stick with the pulled pork, which is pretty good. A longer, slow cook for the brisket will solve this, chefs.
