The best way to sum up Vanilla Rooms is it's very posh, daahling. A few of my girls and I came here…read morefor martinis one Friday evening before heading off to Ten Feet Tall. With the obligatory mood lighting and accompanying ambient music, Vanilla Rooms does everything right in order to establish an elegant and exclusive impression, but there's something about its atmosphere I find strangely off-putting. It's one of those bars where you feel horribly out of place if you laugh out loud. I know not everywhere is like Burger King, but with only a few people scattered around not saying much, the experience would have been a bit dull were it not for the charming company. I will say that we each enjoyed very strong dirty gin martinis, which were the perfect complement to our gossip-fuelled discussions (which is another reason I don't like drinking in too-quiet establishments - people can overhear your conversations!). Admittedly, it'd be a fantastic venue for a private party, as Vanilla Rooms is a modern and sophisticated setting that would comfortably accommodate around 30 of your closest friends.

But anyway it was perfect for the wedding party because its pretty small and keeps everything intimate and friendly while the food really was spectacular. It was a winter wedding and they got lots of pictures next to the open fires and things like that. I can imagine rich people enjoying the lounges and feeling comfort in the old traditional decor that reminds me a bit of something from Harry Potter. I can't imagine what its like to be a private member, but it was a beautiful wedding.

I am left wondering if most Yelpers have simply passed it by or feel that it does not deserve a worthy review. From the outside the restaurant looks a little dated but that is something I like about it. The canopy on which the restaurant name is located itself looks like it has been there for decades. But, like I said, this is a feature that I like. As you enter inside you will find a reception and here you will be greeted by the friendly staff who will direct you to a suitable table. Again, on the inside the restaurant appears quite dated. The toilet is a bit dingy and the tables appear to have seen many years of visitors. What is important however is the food they serve here. My favourite meal to eat here is omelette and chips. They never leave me waiting too long and the prices are really good value for money. For the sake of a refurbishment I could see this place being one of the most frequented restaurants along this street but I'm sure most people are put off and simply pass by. This is not going to be everyone's cup of tea but don't let appearances deceive you. I actually like coming here because when I am inside I don't actually feel like I'm in modern day Cardiff anymore, I feel like I've travelled back in time about 20 years or so.

It felt as if they were like: yea sure you can order what you want but we'll serve you what we think you should eat! The food isn't the best to be honest, if you're in the mood for a nice burger then there are better options in my opinion. The two stars are for the price (it was reasonable), and the atmosphere. But frankly, I wouldn't go back again.

I am American and a sucker for diners back home (especially in New Jersey) so when I discover Americana like this, I always have to check it out. So my daughter and I did just that (she goes to the local university). I ordered one of the burgers which, I must say, was pretty darn good! She also had one and loved it just as much. They were reasonably priced as well. I don't remember the prices but did take a photo of the menu, so you can check it out here. The desserts were also good - and fattening, especially the milkshakes and cheese cake. Sure, it was an American style diner and for the 45 minutes or so that we were there, I could have imagined being back home. Regardless, it was a nice break and a nice little slice of the USA for homesick Yanks and anybody wanting so decent grub.
