But Barge Canal Market deserves a deeper dive, because this warehouse of a one-seller flea market has consigned goods, salvaged treasures and a full comic book nook! Where else will a CRT screen air VHS-quality reruns of I Dream Of Jeannie beside a love(and death)seat gothic tableau. Magically scary is right! I can't say there are a ton of practical goods to outfit your complete home, unless you're like Elvira or Pee-Wee Herman or an eccentric millionaire that wants to recreate nuclear family households through the decades. That practical disclosure disclosed, you're bound to find an accent piece or three that gives that IKEA aesthetic you've been glomming on to for years a little break in the ordinary. The wife snagged a cool little countertop cloche for $12. Bullseye. Finally, the name Barge Canal Market just looks like it should be rearranged to spell a code phrase. This barn contains a well-curated set of items all of which have somewhat of a post-mid-century aesthetic (nothing earlier than 1950's and nothing later than 1980's). There are toys, books, desks, chairs, lamps, appliances, etc. The most interesting part was probably the toys, many of which were new or with their original boxes, which is not something you see frequently in antique stores. Even though I was never fond of the owner, I always made a point of stopping in every few months to check out Barge Canal's inventory, partly because it's on my daily commute home from work and partly because, as I mentioned in my previous review, I so desperately wanted to love this place. Well, a recent visit revealed a nice surprise: new owners who have breathed reasonable prices and great customer service, a great new layout into what was always a great space. Gone are the days of items haphazardly arranged in a mind-numbing clutter and in their place is a new time of logical organization that encourages browsing and rewards browsing with great finds. The sour-puss owner has been recast as a young couple eager to please; it's amazing how a smile can make a customer feel. And the prices seem, in this amateur reviewer's opinion, to be spot-on. The selection is great. They've got a variety of antiques from different periods, including an awesome collection of 60s and 70s vintage items for the hipster in you. My only beef with them is one that I'm making as a book collector. As much as I couldn't stand the old owner, I gave him credit for, for the most part, organizing his books. Books were always out of place, yes, but there was a general formula to the madness. When the new owners checked in, they moved the book section to the back wall and though it's a great space and the books are positioned neatly on the shelves, they're all out of order. Fiction morphs into self-help, which becomes fiction again only to begat a biography section that slowly turns into fiction again. It's pure chaos and finding a book becomes akin to locating a needle in a stack of needles. If they could make books easier to find, I'm betting more customers would buy them. Overall though, it's a great place and worth your visit and money. read more

We love browsing this place on the weekend to find some great additions to our Midcentury style decorated home. We have scored some awesome vintage clothing and kitchen items - to name a few. We also bring my father here every summer he visits. He bought a retro outdoor rocker which he happily uses on his deck in NC. read more

The owners have not reimbursed me for the defective, smoke laden chairs they sold me and refuse to respond to emails, phone calls. After shopping online for living room chairs I found what I thought was the perfect match, at least in appearance. It was disclosed the chairs had a 'rock' & jeremy would reinforce the chairs with a hammer and nail if I wanted. Either way, nailed or not it was never disclosed the rock was a structural defect and it was portrayed they were ready for sitting with or without reinforcement. Screws with a pocket hole jig seemed more appropriate so I declined the nails. After purchased and a long drawn out delivery (over 1.5mo.) the chairs arrived and the upholstery was a better fit than anticipated. But never judge a book by its cover... Problem 1. Stench of cigarette smoke so severe that after 3 cleanings they still stunk! Problem 2. After they were dry and during the first 30 minutes of the first use (reading the paper) one chair snapped in half -never to return to life as a chair again. They claim no smoke stench prior to shipping (all happened in transit???) and that 'the chairs needed to be screwed and glued before major strain'. Apparently their idea of major strain is a 5'4 ,118# woman reading the paper. Needless to say they agreed to refund 1/2 of the chair cost 175$ (No shipping which was $120) via PayPal. They did this after about 2 weeks to us agreeing on the refund. I set up a paypal account and as a new user accidentally refunded the money back. I have endless calls and emails into them to reprocess the refund and they will not respond. I ordered the chairs February 18, rec'd faulty product end of March, and still have yet to be reimbursed. It is unfortunate this type of folk exist, especially for their immediate community of Burlington. Be very cautious purchasing from these unprofessional hustlers, especially on-line. If 0 stars were an option, that is what BCM deserves. read more

Essentially a flea market without the charm. A few pieces of furniture were worth taking a look at, but looking is as far as anyone with common sense would go. A lot of 70s particle board board crap with a fine furniture price tag and appliances that no one in their right mind would plug in. Picture your great aunt's house with the same prices she paid for the items in 1973. Perfect shopping for the hipster who carries a 35mm camera as a fashion statement and makes wild claims about the vintage quality of the prints As a staunch environmentalists I say this place would be better off as the coal shed it once was. read more

Omg.. I love this place. It was such a blast from my 70s childhood..they had the same furniture we grew up wThey have fantastic wood tables.. just my style and the prices are great. I didn't have a big car to buy anything that size so picked up a 2 tiered glass bowl which of course I dropped and broke before I even got home . Great shop, excellent diversion on a Saturday a.m., Myer's next door and the farmer's market now. (BUMMER)! Any moment, really, you want to go into the way back machine. A little bit of this and a little bit of that, glassware in great shape, 40,50, 60 +years old, lamps, paper, statues, a little pricey on the clothes that are crammed. With a knowledgeable guide, one would gain an education and a half for no. And, understandably, a memento of a lifetime as well. Nicest in the area of BTV. read more

The place is located with off of Pine Street. It's a fairly large space and they have a lot of different things. I find that every time I go in there is definitely things of interest but it isn't my favorite place around. Some things are really cheap while others can get rather costly. Barge Canal is one of the best parts of Burlington Vermont. The incredible ever changing layout the owners put together feels like a fun museum the pieces are so beautifully curated. I have purchased most of the items in my living room from Barge, and not only is the quality amazing but the uniqueness of each item feels so special. It's a nice place, pretty clean, bit overpriced though for lots of things.

I just got robbed by the Barge Canal Market and I recommend you never go there. I purchased a wooden bed labeled "queen sized bed" for $169. Admittedly it took me a total of 2 months to actually pick it up and assemble it. When I assembled it, it was NOT a queen sized bed; it was 57" wide and 76" long instead of 60"x78". I called and he told me to bring it down. 15 minutes later I got down there. The second I walked in the door he launched into a tirade about how it was consignment and "he only made $25 off of it." I told him that selling a queen-sized bed that isn't actually queen sized is like labeling a broken TV "working television." Yes it's a bed, but it isn't queen sized. He said "I have a tape measure here--educate yourself." I told him to find me a queen sized bed of that size anywhere on the Internet. He said "it's an antique." Problem is it's made of composite materials that are CLEARLY not antique. The bottom line is that either he didn't do his homework himself with measuring (but then holds me to standard to do so), or he knowingly mislabeled it. Either way, he sold something labeled as a certain size that in fact was not. He didn't deny that he did that, he just refused to compensate me for it. This story and the one above are enough. He's a crook--stay away. read more

Barge Canal Market is well worth a visit when you are in Burlington, VT. New owners have taken over as of 2012 and have brought in a fresh eye and better merchandise. Jeremy and Adele are active dealers along with a roster of guest dealers adding new items weekly. Mid century modern - industrial - and some antiques added here and there...its a great inspiring mix.
