Chicken supereme and tasty beers! What more could a guy want on a Friday night? Fun and busy…read moreambiance? Check. Authentic and friendly service? Check. A tasty dessert? Check. In a world where gourmet chicken restaurants are becoming staple food and microbrewing is more popular than tennis, its getting hard to distinguish your chicken & beer place from all the others. Luckily, all hipsterism aside, there are still a few places that stick to the core and deliver tasty delicous chicken and not much more. Kloek has its own special method of preparation which guarantees a stable level of quality and a much more lean (the fat doesn't drip of your hands) piece of meat. They pre-cook the chicken ik a spiced broth. This is something that my mom (thanks mom!) has done for ages and although it delivers the good stuff, the meat always ends up dry inside. In case of Kloek, its only a bit dry, but not to a level that you'll be bothered. On the other hand, the flavour is spectacular and its not as fatty as the alternative method. What I also love about this place is that they don't serve fries as standard to your chicken (but coleslaw and salad), which is a concious way to treat your customers and keep the total calory level respectable. The dessert - also delicous, we had the milionnaire shortcake - was also modest in size. Last but not least, I've heard that they are also a microbrewery. I tried their dark blonde beer and it was very good, will definetely help you to moist up that chicken. But make sure you don't have to many as they are very strong (8,5%).

The chicken was wrapped in foil so it was still hot. The fries weren't. Yes, they were too cold. Sure, that's always a problem ordering fries, but that doesn't mean it's a shame. This might be one of Utrecht's next hotspots. Maybe it already is. This town needs more places like this!

They basically have five main dishes to choose from (chicken, burger, ribs, chicken satay, and combination plate consisting of chicken, ribs, and sausage). They also have some sides which looked amazing, but we didn't get any because we ordered the combination platter and it was a super huge portion of amazingly juicy meat. You can really taste the barbecue smoke in the chicken from the way it's carefully cooked. Best BBQ in town hands down. If you're there with friends, make sure to get the combination platter. The portions are made for sharing. We topped the evening off with the only dessert on their menu: the most mouthwatering homemade cheesecake ever (apparently it's a super secret recipe). The homemade sauces were also amazing. We got to try the following (it all comes with the chicken, rib, sausage combo meal): - My favorite: The red onion chutney sauce with onions, rosemary, red wine vinegar, honey. This one was sweet and made the sausage heavenly. - Mayonnaise has a slimmer of lemon and garlic. - Ketchup is made with real Dutch tomatoes. - Piri piri sauce is spicy, made with Madame Jeanette peppers and is great dipped with the mayonnaise. This paired amazingly well with the sweet flavor of the ribs. - Mustard sauce was made with mustard seed and Indian curry spices. This tasted like no other mustard sauce I've ever had. I don't usually like mustard but this one was surprisingly high quality. This is a must-go restaurant!

Oh my. We went here for our anniversary. Somehow we thought, oh well, let's drive to Nijmegen…read more Because at sushitest.nl we read it to be considered one of the best places in The Netherlands to eat sushi. We came in to a reasonable sized restaurant. Not to big, which I liked: more intimate and definitely not the same vibe as an all-you-can-eat place. Which it isn't. The menu is a la carte and consists of both sushi and sashimi but also of different courses which can be ordered single or as a menu. The restaurant is decorated in a brocante/dark/purplish style which I do not really associate with Japanese food, but it has a chique and hip feel to it, so that's alright. As it is a fusion restaurant, that's probably the reason for the interor. We snuggled on a couch somewhere in the middle, which I really loved. We, sushi addicts, just glanced at the full courses and went for the sushi plate. They offer a big one and a smaller one. We ordered a small one (20 pieces) with no meat, just fish. (there's also a larger one of 32 pieces) Alongside, we ordered the hotategai roll and a spicy tuna roll. All was served on a big platter decorated with roses. A nice touch! My love asked if the roses were edible. They weren't, but the rettich they were put in was. Good to know ;) Save to say: all the sushi was delicious. A big surprise was the creamcheese roll. Normally, we'd skip those kind of fancy sushi's, but this one was briefly fried in tempura batter and still warm. It was so good! We ordered some "normal" nigiri (sake and maguro) and hoped to be just as impressed. Sorry to say that these were a little average. Not as tasty as we hoped. But all the "special" sushi was delicious. The only downside? All those sauces, mayonaise and tempura batter made me feel I should live on water and bread for the rest of the week. It must be heavy in calories. On the other hand, if we enjoy a plate like this once in a while, it'll be a nice break from the otherwise "simple" sushi we love so much. Definitely loved the experience. We ordered a little bit more out of curiosity, but the first round (the sushi plate of 22 + two extra rolls) was actually enough for both of us! The price is a little higher then at a regular all-you-can-eat restaurant (ironically, there is one on the other side of the street, facing IZZI!) but its way better for a good assault on the taste-buds.. Want to spoil yourself on some delicious fancy sushi? This is the place!

Well, I decided to stick my head down a narrow alley and discovered this small bar advertising craft beers. Well, having just been in Germany for a week and having to deal with a less than impressive range of beers (and no craft beers) I ducked in here, and sure enough they had a pretty impressive range of craft beers. Mind you, the place isn't all that large, and while there are some seats out the front, there aren't actually that many, however it is the beer than drew me here, and they certainly provided that. It was a wonderful start to the best meal I've had in 20 years of visiting the Nederlands. We shared the Duck Pate (Marbre van eendenbout, eendeniever, pruimenchutney, Aceto balsamico and brioche). It was fantastic. Absolutely Fantastic!!! Then we moved onto the Rump Steak with Frites (Dun gesneden rumpsteak van de houtskool BBQ, huisgemaakte frieten, seizoensgroenten en rodewijnsaus). The steak was excellent. Wonderfully tender with an outstanding sauce. To be totally honest though, the star of the meal though it was all perfect were the Frites. The absolute best frites I've had in all of Europe and the World. So crisp on the outside and tender on the inside.
