I've visited quilt shops all over the country. For a small shop the selection was very high quality and offered a wonderful variety. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The Barn Door Website glowingly boasts about its store dog, Schatze, who 'loves everyone and will shake hands with you if you put out your hand as if to say, "Welcome to my store" '. Neither she nor the store clerk welcomed us to this store. Don't take kids to this store. My two well-behaved granchildren were quietly looking around. The clerk was obviously so worried that they would do some harm that she could not offer to assist us or even greet us. Quilt stores are usually my favorite shops where I make new friends in far away places and replenish my stash of fabrics with new designs. In Barn Door Quilts, I felt as if was hurried out of the store. read more

Since my mom took up quilting two years ago, we always try to stop in a quilt shop during our travels. It is fun to see local twists on fabric shops. Unfortunately, this is not one of our favorites nor one that we would seek to visit agsin. There was nothing unique about The shop to draw customer in. Mom said it was cluttered and needed a good vacuuming. The clerk had a dog at the counter, which didn't bother us because we love pets, but mom was disappointed that the clerk was more intent on the dog than helping a customer. I have been to quilting fabric stores across the country and always get excited to go to Barn Door Quilts. My criteria is high quality fabrics, new and traditional designs, neutrals, blenders and fat quarters. At Barn Door they are always willing to answer questions and cut fat quarters plus the prices are great. Stop in, enjoy all the bolts of fabric and help support a small local business. read more

I've been in bigger quilt stores that didn't have as good a selection of fabrics. Someone said it was crowded, and it's true that there is LOTS in this small space, but it's well organized. The owner is there six out of the seven days, and is always willing to help. It has a small-town casualness where everyone is a friend. I'm a new quilter, and always find helpful advice when I need it. Don't let negative review keep you away! read more

I had the opportunity to venture into the Barn Door Quilt Shop just recently. I was encouraged by its small town feel and its beautiful quilts and quilt kits. I was excited to take my wife in to get a look around at this really neat Mom/Pop type of store. We are expecting a child coming up and I thought it would be great to purchase a kit and work on a blanket for our little one. I left the store encouraged and excited to show my wife the store... Well that all changed when I called them and spoke to a very angry employee. The employee treated me as if I had no value, they cared not one bit about me. I understand some people can have a bad day, but to treat a customer like I was treated was horrendous. I would encourage you to go elsewhere with your business. If they treated me this way and hung up on me, what's stopping them from treating you like that. I emailed the owner, and if they respond and apologize on behalf of their employee I'll be sure to update this post... Otherwise stay away, they don't value their customer one bit... It's the only quilt shop in Door County and it has a good selection of batiks, local-interest fabrics, kid-related, modern, etc... The little closet to the side has all sorts of useful quilt notions. The owner is very knowledgable and is pretty matter of fact. Like many small town stores, it's a little crowded, but I find fabrics there that I don't see in bigger cities further south. It's important to support quilt shops and I look past perceived grouchiness other customers might observe. read more
