Not a local book shop feel but staff is friendly and helpful in finding product. Don't have the book you want? Have no fear they can probably order it! Coffee? I'm giving stars for the people working because they're delightful! but my god. I don't want to sound horrendous for this but the homeless man allowed to just hang out there with his dirty cups and shoes off is so gross. it's got to be a sanitary issue. he's reading all the books and PICKING AT HIS FEET. I have always found what I have been looking for and then some at Barnes & Nobel. I usually spend an hour plus in here looking at all of their books as well as their records and miscellaneous items. They have so much to look at it's easy to get lost and lose all sense of time. I also love that the Starbucks is in the center so you get the smell of coffee in the air along with all of the books. I've never had an issue with staff being rude to me, in fact I have always had great customer service. I'm not one to ask for help usually so I have always been able to find what I am looking for on my own. You can find cheaper prices in other places sometimes but when you want to browse and look at books for hours this is the perfect place to come. read more

I went there back today and am glad to see is bustling and doing well as ever. I could spend hours here looking through books, vinyls, and board games. I want to tell you why Barnes and Noble will not be getting my business anymore. I ordered something on the 26th. It was cancelled a short time later because it was out of stock in the store. Oh well, it happens. Frustrating, but that's the way things go sometimes. I checked a couple of days later and saw that it was showing in stock again, so I ordered it again on the 29th. This time, it showed ready to pick up at the store. I couldn't go pick it up for a few days, so I checked several times and showed that it was still ready to pick up. I went in to town on the 4th and was told they didn't have the order in the front. When I looked, I saw that it was cancelled on the "5th". The next day. I showed the young lady and she didn't know why it was like that. She made some guesses, but I finally just asked if it could be still in the store. She called up a "manager" to check. What a freakin' joke. He started BS'ing me. "It's because of other things on the order." Uhm... no. It was the only thing on the order. "It's because it was ordered too fast after the first time and the online system didn't update the inventory." Huh? It was three days later. "The online system messes up sometimes and it wasn't in stock." Then WHY was it showing as pulled and ready for me to pick it up for 4-5 days? Isn't that a local store screw-up? He never even attempted to look for it and it became clear that he just wanted to get rid of me. He spewed more garbage until it worked and I left. He got rid of me and I want nothing to do with that company ever again. I used to love going down to a physical location and browsing, but I guess those days are in the past. Amazon has the item. Before I left the parking lot, I ordered from them. No lies. No BS. No manager just trying to get rid of me. read more

If there is anything more wonderful than lots of books, it is lots of books mixed in with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting in the air and the sound of classical music playing in the background. Well, maybe not entirely classical as there was a bit of Katy Perry's "Fight Song" set to violin and that was pretty sweet too. Add the friendly "welcome to the store" when we walked in (through the music section...and they have vinyl records there...do people still play vinyl...I remember when it was the only option) and we were inclined to like this B&N right out of the gate. All of the constructive criticism offered by Charles F in his good review are spot on. This is like a gigantic swap meet in some respects too with the old records and he racks and bins of deep discount books along with best sellers. But depending on what one is looking for, that could come in handy too. And then there is the huge selection of their regular stock. And a big children's section if you are trying to encourage children to learn the value and delights of holding a good old fashioned book in their hands and diving into the world of possibilities books hold for them. We went in for what we thought would be an hour and but for needing to be somewhere else, we reluctantly left two hours later with still more shopping we could have done. The customer service people were very helpful too. There was a specific book in which I was interested and while they had one on the shelf the book was damaged. Or as the service person says, "This looks manhandled." Yep. And since I plan to display it, that is a problem. She offered to order another one for us and have it delivered to our home or to the store. Nice. We took her up on it. (I'm doubtful though...this book is out of print...if the book actually arrives this will be 5 stars. :-) ) We three years after moving to the Treasure Valley to explore Boise's Barnes and Noble. We will go back soon. THIS N THAT: 1) PARKING: Private lot which seemed to have lots of space. 2) ACCESSIBILITY: Accessible parking in lot. Level in and throughout the store. Aisleways are ample. Coffee bar is "set up" but there is a ramp on one side. Standard height seating in coffee area. Accessible loo for him and her. 3) COFFEE BAR: We didn't sample the brew or snacks there, but there is a coffee bar in the middle of the store that appears to offer both Seattle's Best and Starbuck's. Several tables with chairs and a few stools at a high counter. The tables had lots of people reading and working at them. read more

Nasty experience with "store manager" rhymes with Fawny but starts with a T. Do women really think we need their agenda when trying to buy something. The store didn't hire you to be mouthy they hired you to be helpful. Develop thick skin, but in this case you didn't need any, my goodness. Just be helpful, pleasant anything wrong with that in retail?!? What an unpleasant person. How you have been hired. Trained, and managed to work with people and in your words manage people. Not very happy with my experience there I hate leaving bad reviews but I left that place with a very bad taste in my mouth... For the first part there is no floor help so if you couldn't find anything you're out of luck. When I found the customer service kiosk... There were two computer terminals that were facing the customer area so I assumed because there wasn't any signage that they were for customers to look up and find books.... An employee comes out of nowhere and snaps quite rudely that those computers are for employee use only... Even said he'll be right with me he was helping somebody else... But it took over 5 minutes for him to get back to me.... read more

Stopped by for a book listed at 51% off and available for in-store pickup. It rang up at full price in the store and the cashier said I would need to reserve it online and come back in 20-45 minutes to get the sale price. What nonsense. I left it there. Also annoying is the lack of kiosks to locate a book (especially when no one is at the info desk) and the giant piles of toys throughout the store that make it difficult to shop with kids. Oh the nostalgia. There was once a time when I would visit Barnes and Noble weekly, spending hours perusing with a latte in hand. Fast forward to now, I walk in with my trusty Doc Martens on my feet and a few bucks to drop on yet another book that I will read... next year. It is still the same. Less busy. Less cool. Yet, still anticipation adds a skip to my step. Maybe I'll find something cool? As usual, the clerks are hit an miss. Today, no one welcomed me or asked if I needed anything. I spent 30 minutes looking around and grabbed a pagan book that loomed neat. The disco section is cheese ball and there are still plenty of cheap reads to be had. Amazon has more selection and a used book store would have better deals, but I still appreciate having behemoth bookstore in the area. read more

Barnes & Noble is one of our family fun & family time kinda place just because we enjoy books esp the kids. We come here to skim on books & if we like it we buy it, we usually get one each for the kids most of the time, we like to build our family library! I like that there's a Starbucks inside & you can bring & drink coffee while reading. Aside from books, they have CD's, videos, games, toys here! You get 15% off if you have a membership including coffee. Great place to hang out & develop the bookworm in you! I have to admit though that the prices are not so great, sometimes I see the same book & discounted much like Ross/TJ maxx or even online! I hope bookstores don't die out. With Amazon monopolizing so much of book sales, it's easy to imagine a world in which we have to go online to buy books, or at least to go to a bookstore with a large inventory. BN is the one place in Boise--and most towns--where you can still wander around and peruse a huge selection of books. I hope, beyond hope, that they stay in business. I always buy something when I come, even if just a coffee or a cookie, just to help support the place. I'd encourage others to do the same. While it's lovely to camp and read books for free, the place won't be around forever if we don't pay into the system. The employees here are friendly and helpful. If you need directions toward a book, they'll take you to the right section. If they don't have what you need, they'll always be happy to order it. The prices are what you'd pay anywhere else--that's how the whole "list price" works--and they've always got a massive selection of bargain books in the front. If you need a journal or stationery, they've got a grade deal of different types as well. The children's section is expansive, and they've recently added games and some strange figures to their selection, along with candy. While I'm not a huge fan of those products, and resent the floor space they take away from books, I can also see where they're struggling to stay competitive in the market, and are looking for ways to keep making money. If that means a few weird bobble-heads near the Psychology section, well, okay. They've got tables and chairs on the peripheries of the store for sitting and reading, as well as a cafe in the center where you can have a drink or a treat and sit at a table. These aren't standard Starbucks pastries, but Cheesecake Factory pastries, as well as grilled sandwiches, soup, and pretzels. And yes, cheesecake. Mind-blowing, calorie-dense, belt-busting cheesecake that pairs really well with the latest diet book. Definitely stop there before you sit down with a stack of reading material. BN. It's a national chain, lacks the quaintness of an indie store, and wants to be all things to all people. But it offers so many things you can't find elsewhere, so you can hardly hold those faults against it. read more

There is simply no where else in the Treasure Valley (that I am aware of) that offers the depth and breadth of selection that Barnes & Noble offers. I use online sellers quite a bit, but I always prefer to go to a brick and mortar. I'm simply impatient and enjoy, to some degree, going out and visiting a location. Now that's not to say B&N is perfect, too many gimmicky young adult stuff being pimped and I think over all these years I've bought one fiction piece from here. There are too many local used book places that offer shelves of awesome. But for non-fiction or more esoteric magazines this is the place, still the technical oriented books are spendy. 40, 50, 60 bucks in a lot of cases for computer literature though gems can be found. There is also some lag in getting tomes that cover current technologies but that is to be expected. So yeah I'm a fan, just wish they had sales more often and concentrated less on whatever series is the currently in vogue. read more

This was my first trip to a Barnes and Noble and even though this place is A-OK "The Shop Around The Corner" it is not. B and N has a good selection of media, but I wish they had more seating and options for a relaxing afternoon of reading and buying books. The checkout lines were entirely too long and at times an associate to help me find the books I was looking for was tough to locate. All in all, this was a decent experience but I will continue to seek a more cozy, non megastore experience and vibe. read more

Having a large, got almost everything bookstore is fantastic. I still prefer paper over electronic when selecting certain types of books. They have a large collection of Programming books for many computer languages in addition to many other subjects. The children's section is large and has most of the recent and popular releases. I've had some difficulties finding books that were more than a few years old in the children's section though. Popular novels are generally very easy to find and they have a wide selection of Language Learning books/dictionaries with the Rosetta Stone series. I don't go to the cafe as I don't go to the bookstore to eat or chat. Music and movies are quite expensive usually full retail, if you're looking for movies particularly I'd suggest looking elsewhere. read more

I could have purchased the book at Target a week ago for less money. Other outlets I have used make sure you get the item in your hands on release date. It's no surprise that bookstores are a dying breed in our world of Amazon and other online purveyors. This hit home when I walked into Barnes & Noble and first passed through a movie & Music department (complete with vinyl!) then into what appeared to be a Collectible & Gaming department, opening up to a LARGE coffee bar/cafe area.. with a few shelves of books off to either side and a large children's area in the back. That being said, I wasn't really there for a book so it wasn't a disappointment. I was there for a birthday card, and did some browsing. In the end browsing paid off when I found a heavily discounted sort of collectible item for my own passion. Hello Kitty. If I were indeed looking for a book, in all honesty I'd check ahead before going to the store, there is no guarantee I'd find it in the shrinking stock of tomes. read more

Heinous customer service in the Starbucks coffee shop section here. The majority of people they hire for it are slow incompetent , rude and all around not too bright . Maybe they only hire inexperienced people at this particular location but it's hard to believe how they act given it's just a customer service gig . As My friend and I began to order drinks from the clueless kid behind the counter and mid sentence they just walked off and ignoring us ... um Wtf ? Someone else who worked there came up to help us like it was a totally normal scenario for them . We were totally confused by it and laughed because it was unexpected but out of our control at the same time . We ordered a pizza flavored pretzel as well and after waiting a while for it since nobody else was in or around the shop we asked if it was almost done and looked at us like we were speaking Mandarin and didn't know what we were talking about and argued they didn't have the item we were looking for until I pointed it out behind the case - she finally agreed and begrudgingly put it in the toaster as she huffed and puffed away like we asked her to mop up all the floors while she was at it . BN was all the rage back in the day maybe it still is but not for me. I am overwhelmed with all the stuff including books everywhere. I know the charm of bookstores is for books to be everywhere but here it's like a gigantic swap meet. Whether it's the onslaught of adult coloring books, clearance books, Nooks and Nook accessories, toys, and just stuff. I used to be able to find what I was looking for or at least be able to find a human or a terminal to look something up as to where to find it but alas the glory days are long gone. Now, it's the cheesy people either free reading magazines, books, or sitting up at the Starbucks cafe using the WiFi. Really it's not a bookstore but more like a shelter. I used to like to look for good books to read and now I just come to look for Funko POPs and some graphic novels. It's a shame really, I really miss the golden age of the bookstore but I have to realize that times change and people change and BN shortly will be our only bookstore still Hastings has declared Chapter 11. read more

It is super ridiculous that one of the employees here told me suddenly that the table I am using is going to moved somewhere else for some nonsense reason. First, this table has been here like forever. What's the reason you just want to move it in a sudden? Second, I am the only one who has been using this table for the past couple days. I am not disturbing anyone here. That makes me think that you are really offended to me for just staying at this table for a long time. Isn't it what a bookstore would allow people to do? Third, I would think it is a discrimination against customers who stay here longer and than what normal customers are. I like Barnes & Noble, it's a great place to find all kinds of books from a variety of subjects. They even have graphic novels and manga which is really nice, along with some collectible figurines. This location is like all the Barnes & Nobles I have been too. My issue that I have always had is that the books are sooo expensive, now I know it's not their choice it's the publishers but it's frustrating because I don't really want to shell out 20 dollars for a paperback. And they never seem to have sales going on except the occasional coupon. But recently I found out that the vast majority of their books are cheaper online, and you can do store pick up. I just ordered books tonight and probably saved 20-30 dollars in just sales discount. So my suggestion to anyone who is computer savy. Go in store to look at the book if you want but order online and do store pick up and you can get your books much cheaper in about an hour. Besides that this location is nice and clean and the couple times I have been the staff has been friendly and when I needed help they pointed me in the right direction, and store pick up is super easy you just go to the check out counter. read more
