Went there to buy some books with a gift card. The clerk told me that my Rewards card had expired. The clerk asked if I wanted to renew, and I replied no I wanted to save the money and I'd use my wife's card. We used the gift card and another coupon, the balance was modest. As I go to leave the clerk snidely said you know you could have renewed for free with use the of gift card. Told him can I do it now? Nope its too late he said with sarcasm. This is about the 5th time I have had service problems with this store. The clerks are generally rude and this incident only reminded me how bad it is. read more

The best in the area! Friendly people, huge store, great selection. One of my favorite parts of this particular location is their giant magazine rack which conveniently sits next to the Starbucks inside. A huge amount of seating both in Starbucks and also in the store itself. You could, and I have, gotten lost in this place. read more

I love the smell of books and coffee mingling together. And that is the smell Barnes and Noble has. What they don't have is a useful computer system, like at Borders, to allow customers to look up authors or locations of books. Instead you have to wait in a long line of people for one man to find hordes of books for a store full of people. (However, he seemed to be doing something right because one customer was thanking him profusely while we were waiting.) The cafe in the store is a little understaffed, therefore a little slow. And they could use another person at the front desk as well. Oh, and more chairs to sit in for hours to read books you're never gonna buy. I feel like there used to be so many more chairs. Other than that, the store was very clean and organized, and open until 11pm. I love that. read more

From the 30% lack of product in the Saugus store this location looks to be tossing and turning on its deathbed. I searched for 1/2 hour until tiring failing to find one item not made or printed in China. Give us a choice even if the price is higher.. and putting less product out was a bad marketing ploy. It shows they don't want to hire workers to stock. The coffee house is a good with excellent service. Love the bakery, but they have no selection anymore. Searched for a hardcover of a 2017 award winning book and they it was never shelved. read more

Always gives me a hassle when I use my Educator Card. Makes me feel like they think I am trying to get away with something. Rude Cashiers, always ask if the books ar for classroom use, card not good for textbooks, DVDs, magazines etc. Today they wanted proof of employment by asking for my paycheck!! i went to exchange a book that was given to me by a friend of mine and of course i didn't have a receipt. the manager informed that i could not exchange it, without a receipt and i asked, what happens around christmas when customers return items without a receipt, do you tell THEM to keep the book as well, or is it just because i'm black. It's almost impossible to find a real bookstore these days. I am so grateful that B&N is still holding on with its real book shops. There is nothing like going there and standing at your favorite section, looking at the various covers and wondering which book would be best for you. I have always adored books as a child and this shop helps to fill my book void when I am out of books to read. I would give it five stars except that the Saugus location doesn't offer as many books as some of their other stores. Add to that the fact that they don't have many new books that are recently published, keeping older books in the "New books" slot for too long. The only time that new books seem to be released any more is over the Christmas holiday. Maybe most people only read during the holiday break? And, unfortunately, the store can only be accessed by Route 1 north. Too bad that a entrance hadn't been allowed on the Lynn Fellsway, since it passes over the store as you get onto Route 1. I think it was probably not an option that was available at the time the store was built but I wish it had been. Overall, though, I am very happy with the store and pray that it stays in Saugus for many more years, read more

I know, I know, Barnes and Noble is a chain. Yes, that is so. However, this is probably the best Barnes and Noble I've ever been to. It has a big parking lot (it shares a plaza with Staples and a few other places) so there's always plenty of parking spaces, they have a music/media section so you can stock up on CDs and DVDs, they always have a big clearance area, and there's a Starbucks cafe, so you can grab a coffee (or in my case, an iced venti nonfat no whip mocha, LOL) while you browse, or grab something to eat while you take advantage of the free wi-fi. I love this Barnes and Noble, and there's none of the chaos that surrounds the one in the Pru. read more

This is generally a nice store. Most of the staff is helpful and courteous. The greatest weakness is the management of inventory. If they could come up with a better means of inventory control they could reduce their losses and improve customer service. Store is generally clean including the restrooms. Last time I was there a new bathroom counter was installed. Some helpful suggestions may include a hands-free drying mechanism which could save in over costs and give the appearance the store is interested in becoming more "green". Another big challenge is recycling. I haven't been in the store in three years, but when I was there only cardboard was recycled. A more agressive recycling program would really improve the company's image. During my time in my store, the staff was always friendly and courteous with an appropriate level of professionalism. Yes, there were those who had a "negative attitude", but they weren't the majority of the employees. Always eager to assist you to the best of their abilities. The magazine selection noted by a previous writer was incredible. The magazine manager at the time, not sure if she's still there, was one of the best employees I've come across in my limited experience. I used to enjoy reading the magazine "Nature". The magazine manager went out of her way to get a few copies for sale in the store. I bought it every week at $10.00 a copy. The Cafe manager is worth her weight in gold. Always eager to assist mixed in with that right amount of personal and private attention. The only challenge I came across was that some of the tables were not stable, but this was likely due to the floor settling. It was difficult to drink hot coffee on these tables so I just went to the bar at the windows. Many nights I sat at that window observing the sun going down. Great place to bring your family including children. Nice sized children's area in the rear of the store. Plenty of cameras in the store to help assist in the quest to keep children safe. If you go here on the weekends, come early because there are no seats by afternoon. Nice to drop in during the weekdays when there's nothing else to do. Not many people know that there's a nature path that leads down to Pranker's pond and eventually to the Saugus Iron Works. This is a great place to walk your pet and / or your family. Access point is parallel to the Barnes and Noble building. You'll enter an "archway" of vegetation and the entry point can be challenging your first time around. I recommend wearing hiking boots since the area is well maintained, but is generally a forest. The Saugus River run parallel to this walk. There are numerous paths all around the area for different viewpoints. You will often times run into locals who are more than helpful with any question you might have. Excellent viewing during the fall months. The tree color is spectacular. Hours are dawn to dust. Handicap accessible, but no automatic doors. That doesn't prevent patrons and employees from assisting anyone who has a physical disability. Best access for the physically challenged is the front door. A side door to the Cafe is present, but may be more difficult to access for those with physical disabilities. Plenty of room in the store and Cafe for people in wheelchairs and assisted mobility devices. Overall a great experience. Many great memories. A treasure to the community. read more

I love this store. I've spent countless hours here reading and browsing. I especially love the markdown/bargain sections. Sometimes a great errand day consisting of a Home Depot run (it's right next door), Staples for some oddball something or other I may need, a Starbucks brew from the B&N cafe and some chill'in reading for books makes for a half afternoon well spent. I do agree though that they seem to have reduced the chairs and the cafe is sometimes painfully slow but usually when I'm there, I'm in no rush so it doesn't bother me. read more

This is a good Barnes and Noble, especially considering the fact that it's right on the highway. However, being away from malls and other busy stores makes it ideal for those of us that like to have a quiet Sunday afternoon sitting in the cafe reading a magazine. I MUST say -- they can't figure out how to make Godiva hot chocolate correctly at this location, I swear it's gross here but wonderful at the other B&N cafes, and I've ordered it about 5 times here! The employees are friendly and they keep the store clean... easier, I think, because this seems to be a smaller store than the other local B&Ns, which may be their biggest weakness (in terms of inventory). read more

I've been going to this Barnes and noble for 10 years: since my kids played with the trains and Legos until now when they are in middle school and moving to reading (pre)teen novels. This is my first time ordering from Barnes and noble and I will make sure I NEVER do again, especially this location. They never confirmed the address or name on my order being sent to me and then went on and processed the order. I received the confirmation email with the wrong name/address on the order and in less than hour later I tried to change it and both management and the warehouse management told me there is nothing they can do about it. I love this store. I am an avid reader and a collector of books. I have been all over the world in small shops and chain stores. But I truly can say that I enjoy going to this particular store. The staff are pleasant and helpful when you need it. It is clean and they have such a huge stock of magazines and books. It just has a relaxing feeling when you can pick up a book and get a coffee and dig into a book that you think you might want to buy. I can't understand the negative feedback. I get that they don't have enough staff but most people should understand when you go into a bookstore you should at least know what your looking for and or be surprised at a find that may peek your interest. All the sections history, drama, politics etc are pretty well labeled for one too find. Never had a bad experience and I will continue to shop at one of my favorite places. read more

Brick and mortar bookstores used to be a location where "readers" and those seeking to educate themselves and others would go. Open discussions would often break out that encouraged not only business, but the flow of ideas on all levels. Unfortunately brick and mortar bookstores, not of their own fault, have become basically playgrounds for children and unruly customers. This store is full of wonderful employees with a few bad apples which occur in every organization that are trapped by an antiquated business model which leads to employee frustration and ultimately lower sales. Best to bring your earplugs if you are interested in reading the books you purchase. read more

This used to be a great store, but poor management has really put the nail in the coffin not only this local location but also nationally. Their inventory system really needs to be revamped. About 50 percent of the time when I ask for a book, it cannot be found or is not in stock. The atmosphere has also changed from an academic hangout where locals and travelers would talk about the events of the day. Today it feels like a mix between an airport terminal and a Build a Bear workshop. Each time I visit I see the same people occupying space and largely not making any purchases as well as a child drop off location for parents who wish to go to other shopping locations. It's a shame management hasn't been more proactive. With the financial losses and collapse of the Nook, it is my opinion the store and the overall chain is just hanging around as part of an exit strategy.
