This place is crowded with students and customers. It does have a good variety of books but there are no comfy places to hide away and sit for a moment to read a book. There are many places to sit by the Starbucks coffee shop but also very packed! Since this is a popular spot, wish it was bigger with some comfy sofas/ chairs to sit in. read more

The service at the cafe was horrible. I waited forever for a bagel. Right. A bagel! Approximately 3 customers after me were able to get their coffee and leave while I waited for a simple bagel. Barnes and Noble takes money out of my credit card account every year so that I can belong to their club. I don't carry the club card with me and I usually ask the cashier to bring up my account using my phone number when I buy something from B and N. (Which is seldom anymore.) Long story made short, they cannot look up your B and N account at this particular location because it is a college book store location. I am not at all certain why this cannot happen at this "college location", but I have a suspicion that it must be somehow related to that law that says that a university can not tell me what my son's grades are(because of his privacy rights) yet they insisted on knowing what all of my bank account numbers were. We were there with a family that has teenage daughters. Unfortunately, one of them needed to go pee. Evidently, you need to surrender a photo ID to use a bathroom there. And then wait. Thank goodness we were staying at a hotel 2 blocks away so we avoided any uncomfortable situations. Anyone of the suburban locations is a million times better than this place. I was pretty amped up when we all walked into this store, thinking that I might get a Christmas gift or 2 while I was there, but the selection is limited. Their periodicals section is about a quarter of that in other Barnes and Noble stores. This place is text books and college wear. Haters need to stop hating! Reading the reviews for this place was appalling. Complaining about having to walk the aisles to find a book?, about it being busy? about paying more than at some discount place?, small parking lot?... Seriously? Here's the deal. It's a bookstore. They sell books and do a good job of it. Lucky for us they also sell coffee and yummy brownies...bonus. I go here at least once a week while still buying online so you know my review is legit. I have NEVER had a bad customer service experience. I have always found the staff to be friendly and efficient. While their parking lot may be small guess what they have a PARKING LOT and its FREE. Is this a real B&N or is it just a university bookstore that happens to have the B&N name hanging over it outside? It's unclear. It's not listed on their store finder site. The last time I tried, the promised B&N free wifi was nowhere to be seen (lots of DePaul U routers showing that I couldn't log on to). Will my new Nook work there as it's promised to do in all B&N stores? I'm doubting that it will. B&N should be able to do better than this in the middle of the business district in the third largest city in the US, don't you think? This barnes and noble sucks- the service here is terrible i came in looking for one book- i asked a lady who worked there if she could help me find a book and she just told me the section it would be in and continued talking = i knew the book was a fiction book i didnt need that advice i needed help finding it. i had to ask her twice to help me find something when i should have only asked her once and on top of that she giggles and acts like its a game. this is a grown women with terrible customer service skills- i expected that type of behavior from a kid not an adult read more

I've been frequenting this lovely bookstore for two years and have never had a negative experience! The staff is always friendly and helpful, and the Cafe isn't bad. I do think that they could bulk up the Arts section a tad, but that's coming from someone very interested in that sort of material. I look forward to my next visit! read more

Im not a Barnes and Noble's fan. Borders is way better to me but this store in particular sucks. Their selection of books is small to me and when i go there is never anyone near the books to help you, they only seem to have cashiers. Last week my friend and I went and he was looking for a book and he checked on their site before we went and it said they had a copy in stock. We couldnt locate it so he asked a cashier if she could help and she said typed in the title and i guess it said not in stock. My friend said he went on their site a couple hours b4 and they had said they had it and she said "Well we dont, the school bookstore is downstairs" and i guess cause we we wearing bookbags she thought we were Depaul student and my friend told her "we dont go here" and she repeated the same thing again. So my friend asked if she could look up another book and she just looked away so we said Fuck this place and walked out. The next day my friend went on the site and they still had the book at that store and he got them to hold it for him and he went to pick it up. Idk if it was just a lazy cashier or if the staff is all imbeiciles but i either this bookstore sucks and so does Barnes and Nobles in general. read more

The Worst Barnes and nobles and Starbucks I have ever been too. Very limited amount of books not to mention when you want to use the restroom you aren't allowed to unless you have a PHOTO ID and if you don't have a photo is as a teenager, you can't they give you attitude and have to go across the street. The Starbucks inside ran out of chocolate syrup so no hot chocolate or mochas in Chicago. Very limited everything at Starbucks. Employees are lost and rude And clueless. read more

This is about the B&N color enook & their support in general and not about any individual store. If you are deciding between this and a Kindle, I am here to tell you to get a Kindle. Just read my letter below that i sent to their customer service dept and you will ge the whole story of my treatment by them when I received my enook that did not work. I am writing to let you know of my treatment by your technical dept at B&N. I have never in my life been treated with such disregard by a company before and hope this will find its way to the highest level of management. I was given your color eNook as a birthday present last March and from the beginning it never worked correctly. Every time I purchased an ebook I had to call your tech support in order to get it to download. My calls started sometime in April and have continued all the way up to date. Every time I called, your technicians told me that they "apologized for my inconvenience" yet they refused even after at least 10-20 phone calls and after I brought the enook back into the store where they made the gentleman from the store stay on the line for 1 hour trying to get it to work with your own wii fii, to replace it. Your own employee at the store kept telling them that it was defective and should be replaced but they would not do it. After an hour on the phone with him they finally got it to do a hard reset and said I had to keep it. That lasted for 1 day and the next day it was back to not working and I could not even get to the book I was reading. When I called back that night and insisted on a replacement since I could not even get to a book they said again that they apologized for my inconvenience but I would have to call in the morning as there was nobody there who had the authority to send me a replacement. Ridiculous! I called the next morning and was told your system was down and to call back in 3 days! Can you imagine, 3 days after all this time because your system was down? You can imagine my frustration level at this point. I told them that was absolutely unacceptable. After several minutes on hold I was told that they would get it out to me and I would receive a confirmation email within the next few hours. When no email came after 5 hours I called back only to be told that no request for a replacement was ever put through. So I went through the whole process again. Now a request was put through but even after all this they would not overnight it to me. So I am spending the entire weekend and several days after without being able to read. read more

Uuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhgg... It pains me to say that I don't hate this place. I want so very badly to hate the place. Why? Well, because The Crow's Nest used to be right where this store is now located. The Crow's Nest was the just about the coolest record store that I've ever been to. At least in the top 5 of the best record stores I've stepped foot in, and to think that it's gone just depresses me to no end. Now you see, this is why it pains me to think that anything else could be in the place of it, but low and behold, Barnes and Nobles is there and I'll be darned if it's not too shabby of a place. For one thing if your stuck on Jackson Boulevard on a Sunday, good luck finding a public washroom anywhere other than in this building. So, at first I was set on hating any place that was put there, but after going inside I must say I don't hate it and somewhat actually like it. It seems like they have a pretty big selection of literature, as well as a little snack, sandwich, and coffee area. So, I like it, but don't ask me to like the fact that I like it. read more

I've been coming to this location for a few years and this store almost always has the books I'm looking for! From Christian literature to fiction novels by a large variety of African American writers, I have been able to just drop in without checking ahead of time and find what I'm looking for. Got in the cafe line and saw their chalk board advertising their holiday drinks, egg nog, peppermint, creme brulee, and gingerbread. I order a tall (small) for $4. Get to the pick up counter at the end and see a sign "all holiday drinks $2 today" I ask the barista about the deal. She says the other three are on sale, just not my egg nog. I asked why, since their chalk board clearly lists it as a holiday drink. She said, "yea, i don't get that either." So i said, can i get one of the other three instead then. She looks at me, hands me my coffee and says no. Seriously? I was the only one in line. This whole thing makes no sense. Why have one sign say these four drinks are our holiday ones and then the other say they are on sale (but really just three and were not going to tell you). And why put the sale sign at the end where I don't see it until after I've ordered!? Just to rub my face in what I missed out on? And why couldn't the girl at the register have just mentioned the deal? But the latte was made well, so I gave them a star for that. This experienced just sucked all the way around. Not the biggest B&N I've ever been to. Nice atmosphere, but the selection leaves something to be desired. The TableTop section had around 6 books to chose from. Underwhelming. Location is great and the staff was friendly and helpful though. If you're in dire need of a book, give it a shot, otherwise, head north to the much bigger store there. read more

So in conclusion this place sucks and should be boycotted.The B&N coupon reads valid at B&N Cafes, their cups that they serve coffee in read B&N Cafe, yet the girl at the register tells me I can't use the coupon because this place is B&N college. Misrepresentation/misleading of B&N, Starbucks, and the college. Maybe they should send someone from the law classes down there to determine what they are doing that is wrong or change the name to Ray's famous pizza. My experience at this particular Starbucks store compelled me to sign up for Yelp just so I can express how absolutely disgusting my coffee was. At a regular Starbucks' price, seriously, they need to put a WARNING SIGN somewhere to alert people that this is NOT actual Starbucks espresso. I had been to this particular B&N a few times. The other day, I had a particular experience with a clerk that infuriated me. I have bought books at this B&N with a credit card and have never had any problems. This time, the one clerk decided to card me. I found that odd, as I have never had to use my id. before. After all, this is not a liquor store. On top of that, I am 25 years old. The problem was is that I share my credit card with my mother, who has a different surname from me. The clerk explained to me that she had to do it or she would get in trouble with her manager. I was like, OK. I understood. I guess, but why did they decide to do this today? I didn't see them do it to the other customers, but I was like, whatever, do what you have to do. So I waited patiently for her manager to come out. About 10 minutes later, after holding the line up, out comes this grouchy looking, middle aged woman with short blond hair. She looks at my credit card, and I explain the situation, that my mother and I share the same cards. She looks me right in the eyes and starts yelling loud enough so that the other customers can hear "why do you and your mother have a different name?!" I was like, "well, if you want to know my life story, my father died when I was a baby and my mother remarried. Does that explanation make you happy?." This clerk starts shaking her head in my face like she is a guest on the Jerry Springer show and starts yelling at me! She told me that it is illegal to use another person's card. My mom has given me permission to use her card, and we share the same bank account. I didn't know that was illegal and as it turns out: its not. She then demanded to know "why my mother and I would share the same bank account." I was infuriated by this question. Why is that her business? I told her that I was a customer who has spent thousands of dollars throughout the years at B&N and that I did not appreciate her conduct. I understand if they are worried about identity theft, but I felt that this one particular "managing" clerk was out on a power trip and she crossed the line when she started asking for personal information On top of all this, she said all these things as loud as she could so that everyone else in the store could hear. If you can't take my card because of a policy, then just tell me. This woman was relentless, and was treating me like one of the homeless people that come in and harass the customers from time to time. She started laughing at me when I told her I didn't like the way she was treating me. She then went on to the next customer still laughing at me, and talking about me to the other customers. While she was checking other customers out, and I'm trying to pay for my books with another clerk, (I had cash), she starts yelling at me again from across the counter. This woman got me so infuriated. I finally got angry and told her that I am a customer and do not deserve to be treated like a lowly servant by a frigging Barnes & Noble Clerk. She kept laughing at me. She wasn't even paying attention to what the other customers were handing her, like....GEE, maybe stolen credit cards! I mumbled something to myself that I was taking law classes and that I was pretty sure it wasn't illegal to use my mother's credit card when she gave me permission. She starts yelling at me: "I am a lawyer and if you don't believe me, look me up on the Internet!" I'm like, "oh really, and if you were this big shot lawyer then why are you working at Barnes & Noble?" I was almost near tears. I demanded that she give me her name so that I can report her to her manager. She kept giggling and hid her name tag like a coward. The manager finally came out, and I told him the problem. He was actually very nice and understanding. Like I said, I understand if they have a policy about credit cards, but this woman's conduct about the whole situation was DEPLORABLE. She treated me like I was a criminal. And if she really believed I stole a credit card, she wouldn't have given it back to me. She would have held on to it and called the bank. She also crossed the line when she tried to engage me in a "Jerry Springer" fight, and when she went off the subject by asking me personal information about my surname and why my mother and I chose to share a bank account. The manager was very apologetic and told me he hoped I come back to the store again, and he gave me a discount for next time. On a lighter note, the time I was there before, this other clerk, a man with a British accent, was exceptionally helpful when I was looking for a book. I never got his name, but if you need help, look for him. Avoid the lady with the short blond hair. read more

I adore bookstores and I have worked at a bunch throughout my life. I bought a book as a gift for a friend who already had the book so I offered to return it for her since I bought it and the store was down the street from my work. It was the holidays so I let it slip my mind. I went to return the book which is softcover, still in the bag with a receipt and they wouldn't return or exchange the item because it was just past the TWO WEEK deadline. A two week return policy is bulls$%@--I could understand if it was a textbook but it was a popular paperback book that had a cover (which you would have been able to tell had been read). I am so pissed that I am NEVER shopping at Barnes and Noble again and will continually encourage others not to as well. read more

Seriously, DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY HERE. Especially in the college textbook section. Every semester it is something new with this place. The staff couldn't be less helpful or more rude. I recently called to see if a book was in stock and spoke to someone named Debrah. She refused to even tell me if they had the book in stock before I trekked all the way down there. This location has the worst customer service I have ever encountered at a retail store. I have asked to speak to the manager several times and I have been refused each time. Not to mention they sell their textbooks at rip-off prices. They sell used copies of old editions for more than Amazon sells the new copy of the new edition. Their financial statements even say that they use the rush at the beginning of the semester to increase profits via leveraged sales.
