After going to Powells in Portland, I've been wanting to do a local bookstore tour of Fresno so I…read morestopped by Hart's Haven. Hart's Haven is no Powells, you won't have to browse for hours. It's very small (about 500 sqft, 2 rooms of books) with a jazzercise studio in the back. They have nice antique settees in both rooms. $2 for paperback and $4 for hardcover. The guy in the front was very kind. Since they have a jazzercise studio in the back, I think they should do speakeasy events there for book lovers since they have a nice enclosed parking- Bridgeton High Tea..., twilight dinners...A You marathon... Hunger Games costume party.... crafting with books.. I've never read Twilight, but since I was just in Oregon, I have to read or watch the twilight series now, but they did not have the book. They take donations so if anyone wants to donate twilight, lemme know! I had exactly $6 cash so I got myself a C.I.A. cookbook (Culinary Institute of America) because I collect cookbooks. Anthony Bourdain, Roy Choi (I ate at his restaurant, Best Friend in Las Vegas) & Grant Achatz (I dream of one day eating at his Michelin Starred restaurant, Alinea in Chicago) graduated from C.I.A. I also got a brand new paperback from Target- Love, Naturally. I am a little behind on my reading because life has taken me on a hell of a ride this year.

The prices were very…read morefair ($2 for paperback, $4 for hardcover unless otherwise marked), and there is a decent range of genres (mystery, historical, sci-fi, etc.), though you shouldn't expect to find a specific book you had in mind. If you're feeling adventurous or want to try something new, they also have 'mystery books'! Those were $10 and come with goodies like pens, bookmarks and candy Definitely coming back!

There are also plenty of toys and fun items like LEGO sets and themed merchandise. Kids will definitely enjoy browsing around here. The selection is excellent and it's easy to spend a lot of time exploring the shelves. A great stop if you're looking for books or gifts for young readers.

Recent studies show a dramatic decline in Americans reading books for pleasure, particularly among…read morethe younger generations. We can primarily blame streaming devices, podcasts, and social media for that. I am first to admit that these distractions have led to my shorter attention span and fleeting interest in what used to be a hobby of mine, reading [for pleasure]. I vowed to change this as one of my goals for the year. This is why I consider myself fortunate that there is a Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Fresno. Barnes & Noble has a vast selection of books, children's games and toys, a music and movie store, a stationary, a kid's reading room, and a Starbucks inside for adults to do the same while enjoying a cup of coffee and a pastry. Moreover, they host in-store or virtual events every month featuring critically acclaimed authors discussing their latest novels. It is the largest online bookstore and the best destination for rare and collectible books, magazines, and games. I stopped reading magazines years ago when I ended all my various subscriptions. Sadly, this was around the same time I stopped reading for pleasure. The recent novels, including those that make the New York Times Best Sellers list, do not interest me. I gravitate to classic American fiction, graphic novels, history, humor, and biography. Barnes & Noble has a virtually boundless selection of them. A few years ago, it appeared Barnes & Noble was about to suffer the same fate as its competitor, the now-defunct Borders Bookstore. They have weathered the storm and have made a comeback, reporting strong sales in recent years. Like most Barnes & Noble which are known for their friendly service and keeping the stores clean and well-organized, this Fresno location is no exception. I always find the people who work here to be very friendly, accessible, and generous with their time. I have also noticed the staff are good at picking up misplaced books and magazines and returning them to their original location and will stop what they are doing to assist a customer. I get a nostalgic feeling whenever I step inside a Barnes & Noble. Reading is obviously a great hobby to pick back up on. I am lucky there is one in town I can always visit to springboard my renewed interest in reading.

I first came across the Book Bus at Tioga-Sequoia, where I bought a cute almost 100 year old paperback. Ana pops up with The Book Bus at big events around town, but is now located inside Let It Grow on Shields Ave. It's a cozy wee space and a book lovers dream. There are some featured books on the main table and a range of genres to suit any taste. Right now it's all used books, mostly around the $5-12 mark so super affordable. They also stock some art and trinkets from local makers. It has a real homespun feel and it's a lovely place to hang out. If you can't make it down to the shop to see new stock regularly, Ana also hosts sales and features what's in store on instagram @thebookbusfresno. Follow along to see what's available.
