I LOVE Barnes and Noble! So glad they made this location permanent after closing their Lahaina store a few yrs back. Sadly this location does not have a cafe, unlike there only other Hawai'i location at Ala Moana on Oahu. However, they more than make up for it with the overall feel of the store. As this location is much smaller than Ala Moana, it gives more of an independent bookstore vibe. There are plenty of books, manga, kids section, magazines, and other types of merchandise such as those for K-pop, crochet, and some limited selection of cds. No DVDs unfortunately. They also sell nook merchandise but I didn't see a display for the actual e-reader/tablets. Probably you will have to ask the cashier if you want to buy them. So be quick and come on down to Barnes and Noble. There are some good deals, but if you just use their premium membership you get 10% off almost everything or if you use their basic rewards membership after 10 stamps you get a $5 reward. 1 stamp for every $10 spent in a purchase. read more

It was very crowded when we visited this morning. The layout made it a bit hard to move around, especially with kids. A little more space or clearer flow would really help make the experience more comfortable for families. read more

Barnes and Noble bookstore has closed I swung by yesterday to check out the bookstore when I had a little free time and the windows were papered over and the signs were gone I actually give Barnes and Noble credit for moving to Kahului. Between Amazon Covid the Maui fires it's just probably was too much for them. People buy and read media different way than we did even 10 years ago and 10 years ago book stores were in a lot of trouble. Book stores were great for books, magazines dates, killing time and occasionally finding some fantastic stories. It will be missed. When I first moved here I used to drive to Lahaina on Sundays and enjoy milling around and make it purchases occasionally. The store will be missed read more

Popped in for the first time and was surprised at how large a store it is on such a small island. Tidy and clean and the staff super helpful. Hubbs n I had read about their Christmas book drive for local keiki and decided to buy some books to donate. Nice collection to choose from and we found a beautiful book about a honu in Lahaina with watercolour illustrations, so some little person will have a bedtime story that they can relate to locally. If you have the time please donate a book, they start as little as $4.99 for an early reader which will set a child on the path of a lifetime of reading :) read more

My fiancee and I came here during our visit because we always love a good Barnes & Noble run. The employees here were extremely weird. While my fiancee was using the restroom someone started knocking and being like who's in there? which first of all what? Then proceeded to be like this is employees restroom only. We checked the signs when we came out and there was no sign indicating that. The old woman employee came back a second later asking my fiancee how long she was going to be in there which is extremely invasive and uncomfortable. The employee kept saying she was on her 15 minute break and shouted through the store I'm going to be late from my break because someone's in the employee restroom. How rude could you possibly be... When my fiancee went out to confront whoever was doing that the woman was just like I didn't get to go now. like first of not our problem, second what employer would only let their employees use the restroom during their break. Absolutely ridiculous and horrendous. When we walked out of the store the woman shouted have a nice day and was laughing. One of the weirdest experiences. I hope that woman gets fired. This is the first time I visited the store since they moved from Lahaina. I love the fact there's a book store in central Maui. I was a regular at Borders. I would go there weekly & buy books, music, DVDs & get a pot of tea. I would sit there for hours enjoying the treasures I bought. Too bad this establishment doesn't have that vibe. It feels cold & is also not well organized. It took me a while to find the book I wanted. I saw only one employee the whole time I was there. I like the fact I can get a real print book & don't have to pay shipping. The shipping to Hawai'i is ridiculous. read more

Yes!!!!! finally I made it to Barnes and Noble. F After months of being opened I found myself at maui marketplace and I had some freee time so I made my way there. Boy was I happy. It's nice and clean. It's not as big as the one in Lahaina but hey I don't need to drive out that far anyways. They don't have big comfy chairs or a cafe there but hey that's okay. They have a nice selection of magazines also books for children with picture books and young adult novels too. I love cookbooks so I will always head to that section as well. Finally stepped into this store after it's been in it's new location for oooh 8 or 9 months now? They are located at the Maui Marketplace so parking is ample and readily available. I heard that it was much smaller than their previous Lahaina location, but once I walked in through the doors I was pleasantly surprised at how big the store actually was! Sure the aisles could be more spacious, but everything is organized so nicely that it didn't feel cramped by any means. Find your way through the myriad of books by looking at the labels above the shelves. They have a little bit of everything from children's books, to cookbooks, magazines, & religious books. They even have planners, board games, & other knick knacks throughout the store. My favorite part was the collection of children's books that were in line with the current holiday, Halloween. I look forward to seeing what they'll have up for Christmas, my favorite! I wish they had a spot to pick-up coffee or hot chocolate like before and had more comfortable seating around to cozy up to a book, but I'm just happy that Maui still has a bookstore. Hopefully they'll find a permanent location soon and maybe have those options again. For now, please stick around! read more

This location is actually very convenient because of how it's centrally located on island. One of the reasons I love Barnes and Noble is because it gives my kids a chance to find some new favorites and also new to them classics. There is always a special gift with purchase for youth selections. The Knick knack table is always a hoot. They have the best selection of Hawaiian culture and storybooks. They also support teachers in the community. You can beat that! read more

The employees here are demented. Never met any ruder, weirder, or unhinged people. I went to the restroom after purchasing books and this one frizzy haired older female employee was banging down the door asking who's in there. Then said it's her break and she needs to use the restroom, and various other strange remarks and demands (I was probably in the restroom for a total of 5 minutes and throughout this was going on). Keep in mind that there was a second vacant and separate bathroom right next door. That's some serious harassment and weird stuff. read more

There was a bookstore earthquake on the Valley Isle recently. As we all know, book stores have been going the way of music stores - to the boneyard. Waldenbooks & Borders both had locations in the QKC mall, both are gone. The larger Borders location in the Maui Marketplace closed in 2011 and left the central Maui area without a true bookstore ever since. BACK IN THE DAY: In came Barnes & Noble who opened up shop in the Lahaina Gateway back in 2008, in a behemoth 24,000 SF spot complete with a coffee & snack bar. The seismic activity was curtailed for 10 years. Lahaina residents had a great place to shop and hangout at. The rest of the island either had to commute 20+ miles, settle for the limited selections at the big box retailers or order online. Fine. Enter 2017 and a 6.0 magnitude shaker came. News reports of a lease dispute between B&N and Lahaina Gateway and a possible closing of the store surfaced in the papers and social media. A petition to save the store was started by a Maui teen which seemed to have rescued the store from sudden death, or so we thought, as the store was to stay open "for now". 2018 brought bittersweet news. B&N announced that they were leaving the Lahaina Gateway and relocating to the Maui Marketplace in Kahului in March. Devastating news for the west side but happiness for the population center of the rock. CURRENT DAY: B&N opened up shop, temporarily, in the 11,000 SF former Petco spot which is over 50% smaller than its Lahaina footprint. Thus, there is no coffee/food bar but just a handful of chairs near the front windows. In addition to books and magazines, they sell a teeny tiny collection of vinyl records. I looked at one out of curiosity and they ran about $25. TIP: According to news reports, they're trying to find a larger, permanent space in central Maui. OVERALL: Long live the bookstore! read more

I am so grateful for Barnes and Noble bookstore! Thousands and thousands of books, stationery options, magazines, games, something for everyone. I am hoping that young people will read and always have a good book on the side to read. Prices are reasonable and always there are sales on a variety of items. The two staff members were helpful to me and very willing to go the extra mile on researching for the book I wanted. Don't let Maui be without a wonderful bookstore again! Go visit. read more

Let's face it. Maui has lost most of its bookstores to Kindle and to a general lack of interest in reading. Somehow Barnes & Noble keeps reinventing itself and has installed a cafe, video and technical services, and even information centers. But what strikes me most are the help. Every time I needed assistance, someone is available to locate either a classic or the latest guide on The Road to Hana. Do not miss their Holiday card selection. So happy Barnes and Noble came back to Kahului after years in Lahaina, in my opinion this is a more central location for the whole island. I just love book stores and we have so few these days on the mainland. They had all the books I was looking for. By the way it's right next to Office Max and it's easy to miss since it's not a big sign or big store. read more

This company should be renamed to Bait and Switch. I decided to buy a book the other day and went to our only bookstore on island, the Barnes and Noble in Kahului. It is in a hidden location near the food court in the old Sports Authority, Lowes mall. Finding it is not that easy, I should have took this as my first hint that I was not going to have much success there. Once I did find it and was able to park, I started to walk up to the front of the store. I noticed at the front entrance they had a book cart. It contained various books, with signs on it stating, about a Fourth of July sale. These signs advertised the sale from the 4th to the 7th with the books being 5.99. Now there were atleast 3 of these signs on this cart. So I selected a book and continued into the small size store. The inside was cramped with the shelves overflowing with books, disorganized like a school room during a recess. They had two authors doing book signings. This seemed to be the only draw into the store, people there supporting the authors rather than regular shoppers. After a few minutes of looking I was able to find the book I was looking for and went to the register with my purchases. I found out the book I thought was 5.99 was in fact 12.99. I asked why when it was on the discount cart at the front of the store. I was told it was because only some of the books were on sale, the others weren't. I asked to talk to a manager as I paid for my books. Finally the manager got there as I was leaving. It was a young person who I think they forgot to train and just threw the title of manager on her because they needed someone to be a key carrier. I asked her about the pricing on the cart and why would they have books on it which were not on sale. I mentioned to her about the pricing displays and what they were doing was baiting a customer into thinking the book was one price, then at the register switching it to a higher price, a practice which is illegal in most states, a bait and switch. She looked at the display and took off a 4.99 price sign from the far side of the display, showing it to me that it states for fiction etc., type books. I pointed out to her as a customer how would I know what books were which and what prices applied to what book, as the cart had three price signs on it, 2 for 5.99 the other for 4.99. I complained as when I went to the register my book was 12.99. Over double the price advertised. Of course all she said, "that was the pricing" and ignored me from then on. I feel she did not know the first thing in customer service, was very weak in retail management skills, and was just a figure head because it was Saturday and the Store Manager had the day off. Of course, ignoring a customer complaint is a good way to get that customer to return to your store. Overall if you're needing a book on Maui, don't shop here. Order it on line, as you will know the price is what you're paying for it, rather than have it switched when you go to pay for it. Barnes and Noble cooperate- you should be ashamed of the way this store is doing business. Either retrain the staff or close it down. We don't need a dishonest retailer on Maui. read more

Nice store but a bit small. Im used to the stores on the Mainland which are quite a bit larger. I was looking for a few of my favorite children's books (I'm a retired kindergarten teacher) to give to a friend and they didn't carry them. I could have ordered them but unfortunately I shopped at the last minute and couldn't do that. I found some cute books but next time I'll have to plan ahead. read more

At last! A new bookstore in town. Is it everything I want in a bookstore? No, but it means I don't have to drive all the way to Lahaina, or wait days for Amazon to deliver​, or months ( yes months! for availability​ at the library) for a new book. It's not as big as the Lahaina location, doesn't have lots of comfy chairs or a cafe inside. But, it has the one thing,really the only thing that keeps brick and mortar bookstores in business these days, and that's recently published books! It also has best sellers, lots of books for children and teens from picture books to young adult novels. It has the largest magazine selection on the island, a small gift section, all the usual categories​ from self-help​ to cooking to how to, religion, travel, biography. There are cheaper alternatives on the island, but if you want a recently published or popular book and don't have time to sift through hundreds of books, or want a clean perfect book or need it today then this is the place to go. read more
