You can't miss it from the parking area of the Heart of Route 66 Museum. The cylinder-topped pump is an skyscraping replica of the type commonly in use when Route 66 became a national highway in 1926. The pump was originally designed to include a spiral staircase and observation deck, which had to be scrapped as too complicated for the mostly volunteer crew that built it. I'm not a PW fanatic so there was no reason. But, when some girlfriends suggested we go see the downtown movie sets and check out the historic downtown area, I decided to join them. I was so glad I did. It sounds like a cliché, but everyone was so friendly and inviting. We felt truly welcomed in every single locally owned shop that we visited. Some of our stops stretched into thirty minute visits with the stores' owners. Really, I can't remember when I've had an experience like this. If you have not been to look at the movie set (turning the downtown into Fairfax for the upcoming "Killers of the Flower Moon" film) you must. Although they were not filming in town the day we visited, there was still a lot of the film crew working on the set or showing people around. It was cool to feel like a part. Also, I can't stress how nice all of the other boutiques and shops were around town. (Before you leave, check out the swinging bridge and the Saint Kateri shrine.)

It was originally 9 stories, 4 more stories were added shortly after completion. It was supposed to complement (not compete visually with) the Philtower. A tunnel connects the two buildings. You can also find the WP initials. The zig zag designs of the glass and bronze insets above the entrances are very characteristic and the architecture shows the Art Deco style in Tulsa. It had naturalistic motifs outside and inside (flowers, vines, and animals). The penthouse was added in 1937 as Waite Phillips' primary residence. The rooms have hardwood paneled walls and ornate decorative Art Deco details. Besides it's awesome historical significance, it is where Mod's coffee and crepes is located as well as the awesome Deco District shops (Picklesworth, The Bookerie, Okie Crowe and Made).

It has a beautiful, classy lobby that is probably the most beautiful lobby in Tulsa. I love the fan traceries of the Philtower, but that is gothic! I have never been past the first floor, but hear the second floor and penthouse are fabulous art deco examples. It is on the National Register and in all the Art Deco books!

Home Depot bought the site in the 90s, thankfully saved the facade and rebuilt a building for a million dollars! Way before my time, I read this site was McNulty Baseball Park where Babe Ruth and the Yankees played! I also didn't know the building had been Club Lido in the 30s. Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway performed there! It is in all the Art Deco books!

What a wonderful window into a time and place so distant in one way, but so near in another. I wasn't alive when the Marlands lived here - not even close - but my great grandmother, whom I knew well, would have been a young woman in this home's heyday. We especially enjoyed the mini-tour given to us by the woman volunteering that day, and learned more in 15 minutes than in a week of attending a history class.
