The fresh and locally reared meat is excellent quality, I'm a big fan of their smoked streaky bacon. They will happily order in more obscure cuts if you ask in advance. The best thing about Scriven and Thornton's has to be the deli counter. It is piled high with all sorts of cooked meats, pies, cheeses and Scotch eggs. They also serve the most incredible hot pork sandwiches - complete with crackling, applesauce and bread dipped in gravy. Understandably, the queue gets big at lunchtimes.

The shop was very busy which was a good sign and looked clean from the outside. I wasn't sure about the meat being in the front window even though it was in a covered glass case however that was my only quibble. The guys behind the counter were all very helpful and polite and the final bill although high was about average for what I bought. On cooking the bacon and sausages I was quite happy to see no manky white stuff came out the bacon and was happy with the taste. The sausages I was a bit disappointed with as the casing was quite tough. Still, not bad. The Sunday roast was brilliant. No shrinkage and the meat was tender and juicy. So this butcher is recommended, but I'll stick to my usual one.
