We were doing luandry accross the street so we just dropped in. Service is fine -- nothing to rave about, nothing to complain about. The vibe is casual and unpretentious, which works if you're in the neighborhood and not looking for anything fancy. That said, the name definitely does some heavy lifting here. "Royal Albert" sounds grand; the experience is more "friendly local pub." Still, it's an easygoing place that does the job.

They were running trivia games while we were there, which added to the overall vibe and made it feel like a true neighborhood spot. The ambiance is great: a cool, old-school bar with friendly local staff, and you definitely get the sense that people know each other here. Solid selection of beer, wine, and cocktails/mixed drinks. My husband ordered a Guinness, which was a good choice. Unfortunately, my margarita was underwhelming and honestly wasn't that great, which knocked the experience down a bit. Overall, it's a good place to hang out for the atmosphere--just keep your cocktail expectations reasonable

This dive bar is so divey I once saw Greg Louganis here…read more But really, this is the best dive bar in Sydney. And, like every good thing on God's green earth, its got a great story behind it. And you can see that story in her pearls and powder and rouge and general anachronistic Driving Miss Daisy getup most Friday nights, and others if you're lucky. I'm talking about Doris Goddard, the publican, an actress who starred in movies with Bob Hope and Katherine Hepburn, and who's run the joint for longer than most of us have been around, and from whom the name Hollywood sprung. The pub itself is a bit scuzzy and gritty and lived-in and that's why we all love it, we being the coterie of regulars and blow-ins, many sweeping in from the creative hub of Foster St - models from Chadwicks, designers from Frost, and tons of other attractive-and-talented types who like good times over pretense. Happy hour runs 5-7pm with regular beer and wine specials, and cocktals - all cocktails - are just $12. Say whaaaa!

When I first visited this pub a number of years ago the walls were full of cubist paints (like…read morethose of Pablo Picasso), and that was the major reason why I wanted to return. Imagine my disappointment when I stepped in through the door to discover that the lovely old lady, and cubist paintings, were gone, to be replaced by drab walls and a disinterested barkeeper. Still, I swallowed my pride and ordered my beer (not that there was a huge selection on tap). Well, I'm going to have to say that this place is best avoided. While it looked cool with the paintings now it is just an ordinary, or even less than ordinary, pub. Nothing much to see here.

Uncle Kurt's is a tiny one room cocktail dive bar in a back alley under a multistorey carpark just across from the old Parramatta Mall not far from the old Roxy. They've gone with a New York theme with heavily graffitied walls, hip hop beats & deli style sandwiches, meats & jaffles. The cocktail list is split into 3 sections of classics, modern & creamy all coming in a shade under $20 a pop created by genuine experienced mixologists. If cocktails aren't your go they also have a mixture of craft beers, a variety of wine & of course straight up spirits. Staff are all friendly, knowledgeable & happy to help.

Came in on a Tuesday night with a fairly large group. Was pretty empty besides us. Super hipster…read morebar with a dark seediness to it. Both bartenders were quick, courteous, and gave awesome recommendations. I usually drink beer but since this was more of a cocktail bar, I started with a margarita. I asked for the basic, but the bartender quickly tried to get me to try the jalapeno margarita. I was quick to decline since I'm not into jalapeno or spicy drinks. The drink was mixed and strained into a martini glass... didn't seem to be as full as it should have been, but I wasn't upset. Drink tasted great, not too strong, too sweet, or too tart. I noticed lots of people getting the freshly pressed apple drinks, so I decided to try one. When in Rome, er, Newtown.... Asked for the Sailor Jerry and apple, but once again, the bartender was quick to recommend something different. He wanted me to try JD Tennessee Fire and apple. I know it's like Fireball, which I hate, but he was very persistent with his glowing recommendation, so I obliged. I'm glad I did, because it was delicious. You could only taste a hint of the whiskey, but mixed in with the fresh apple juice - which had a nice frothy foam on top - it was like cinnamon spiced apple sauce. Yum! If you don't listen to the bartender's advice, listen to mine! Prices? Eh, it's Sydney, not cheap. It is what it is. In the end, very pleased with my visit. Kind of annoying that both times I asked for a drink, they tried to convince me to make me something else (must have been competing on a promo or something), but hey, their advice was sound and if I didn't listen, I would't have had my delicious applesauce drink!
