Food: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Cleanliness: 5/5 Decor & Style: 5/5 The best hidden gem I've ever been to! First off it was impossible to find (a friend recommended it to us). We even went to all the surrounding stores and restaurants and they still didn't know! They would say something along the lines of "you're not the first person to ask but I don't know exactly where it is. I just know it's somewhere over there". You actually have to go through the downstairs tailor shop to get to this Speak Easy. The bartenders were great, and the Dim Sum was amazing! Yes, you read correctly, the Dim Sum! lol. The Japanese IPA was great! We ended coming here twice on our trip and plan to come back in the future!

    perfect cocktails!

This review is just cocktails. We came here at the end of the night and we were a little confused on the location but it is down a flight of stairs. The food menu looked very tasty but we were full. So we just got a few cocktails. We started by ordering off of the menu. My favorites were the Stormy in Saigon and the Blushing Dragon. After exhausting our top options in the menu, we asked our bartender to make us something great. For that reason I don't know the names of what she made us but each drink was a perfect execution of the flavors we described. We highly recommend!

The Ginger Beer Teapot, Uncle Mings

It was my first, and last, Tinder date. Enter Uncle Ming brandishing a teapot and a fury of fire-inspired ginger beer. The samurai of suds served up a trio of Sapporo before my potential paramour arrived and we partook of the seemingly bottomless contents of said pot. It was clear that halfway through the liquid haze we dug each other. A lot. And if that wasn't clear enough then the "you two should get a room" yielding PDA should've been the blinking neon sign of acuity. Somewhere towards the bottom of the pot, two more sapporos and a duo of semi-sav the magic somehow wore off. As fun as it was to find a spark and connect, it was equally un-fun for that to unplug and extinguish --- all within the space of a few hours. As a venue to meet single serving friends, Uncle Ming's is possibly the city's most idyllic location. However, if you have designs on rounding second base you might wanna try somewhere less intense (or perhaps just steer clear of the ginger beer cocktail).

Uncle Ming ya crazy old coot! Now that Pervy Uncle Kieran is in Long Bay, you're our new favourite uncy. There's big schtuff afoot at this little joint, like a brand new food & drinks menu coming in September, and the party's already started with a brand spankin' house brew called The Great Uncle Ming, a 7-point-something-% porter that's dark and bolshy but without the heaviness of other porters, meaning you can drink a whole buncha them and not feel like a depressed old Irish boozehound with a gambling problem. Pro tip #1: when doing the York St Bar Crawl, this should be your first stop. Or, hell, go for some midweek madness and do the York St to Clarence St Tour Of Duty. There's lik 8 bars or something in that sucker though so, y'know. Pro tip #2: The owner Justin and GM Jay are friendlier than labradors, if you see 'em around - and they're always around - say g'day and challenge them to an arm wrestle.

A great locale for some unusual and hard to find Asian beers. Cool location downstairs and low lighting. I'm not crazy about incense but walking in does feel like another world. Friends have had a lot of the different beers and the wines are decent as well. They have some expensive cocktails and my take is the exotic beers hit the spot. Some devotees like the dumplings. I think the most inventive aspect of the bar is when you go to the men's room and they have mandarin lessons playing. It totally freaked me out the first time - imagine a sudden NI HAO when you think you are alone in the bathroom. I think this place is cool and worthy of a stop on any small bar 'crawl'. Good to see more of these bars in Sydney!

Blink, and you'll walk straight past the secret entrance! From the moment you enter, this place is impressive. It kinda reminds me a little of mojo bar a few doors down. The atmosphere is kinda sexy in a way. We went in during a week night, and it was easy grab a table and converse between dumplings and beers. Speaking of, get one of everything. Seriously. The dumplings are beautifully crafted and steamed. They're full of awesome flavours and go down well with a tsing tao or three. Beers are a little more exxy here than your typical bar, but service is rapid and on point. I'll be back to try the selection of whiskey on offer.

What's with Sydney and all the themed bars? You got Mojo with the music, Stitch with the clothing and now you got Uncle Ming's with the Asian themed decor. Not that I'm complaining though - its a really cool place with a red Asiany feel and smells of incense when you walk in. The cocktail menu includes a flaming drink called the Chuck Norris which is super strong. I tried the Bruce Lee and the this other lychee drink with gin - both very good. The bartender there was really friendly and nice and made a mean cocktail. They also had yum cha on the menu so my friend and I split the scallop dumplings and some edamame. Very cool place, will definitely come back!

    Kellie R.

I went here after work with a couple of friends for some dumplings and was not disappointed. They were delicious, and they also had probably the best edamame I've had. The plum wine was great too! Very cool, cosy and dark interior. The staff were all very friendly, the young girl looking after us was fantastic. I wish I caught her name. She was very attentive, friendly and helpful. I'll definitely be coming back here!

I've wanted to try this place for ages, so I suggested coming here, but I kept calling it Uncle Wongs, so much confusion! I was like, why can't I find this Uncle Wong's place in google? FARK!!! The bartender was highly amused with my photo taking, but they all turned out crap. Sorry Yelp. I had the "Peanut Chong"... which at $17 a pop, I decided to nurse that sucker and sip it down slooowwwly. It was described tome as a "spicy Asian margarita"... that's about right. Lucky I love super spicy things because this had some serious bite. At the end, I took a big sip and coughed and sputtered all over the place because I got a huge gulp of unexpected chilli in my throat. Which, in spite of the coughing and sputtering, I like spicy, so that was cool. Your mileage may vary! I also sipped some of the Asian beers and they were GREAT! We got an order of dumplings too - chicken and coriander - WINNER! Pork... unremarkable, tasteless... "meh".

Uncle Ming's was a complete accident; gratefully so. I was walking around, trying to find a basement, "speakeasy" pub with no luck, when I stumbled upon Ming's. A dark denizen, it reminds one of an opium den from past movies. Lively music, friendly staff dispels the opium den feel once you step further inside. My bartender, James, passed the test by making me a great old fashioned(a drink all bartenders should make well, or find another job). I'm glad I found this place and shall return.

    Natalie H.

I was taken and they were closed despite it being 11ish PM on a Tuesday night. We begged for one drink and they obliged. You have to walk down a flight of stairs to the basement. The interior here is bathed in red light, giving it a dirty Chinese feel, which I kinda like. I didn't want to flip through a menu so I requested for a bespoke cocktail, in which my companion asked for the same. I got exactly what I wanted - gin, fruity, sweet, with an egg white foam; just my favorite! Green pea snacks were provided FOC, and since the bar was closing, they played nice 90s music which they assured me was not on the regular playlist. We sang along and left after our drinks. The toilets here are clean and also play a tape where you learn Mandarin as you do your business. Very kitschy.

We wanted to come by for quite a while as the sound of Asian whiskeys and good dumplings were quite a tempting proposition. Unfortunately, after waiting an hour for our dumplings, and then told we'd already had them when it was quite clear we hadn't since we still had our order number, they decided to place our order AFTER the party of twenty in another corner. When they did finally come they were incredibly disappointing and under cooked. The apology, very reluctantly offered, was a bowl of tasteless stale edamame. Two beers and a single non premium whiskey set us back $45, when I've had similar in Newtown for $32. But being told by the manager wed already had our order, and then placed at the back of the queue when he reluctantly conceded we weren't lying was the epitome of bad service and lame management. We liked the wall of portraits and the nook in the back, some interesting corners to cluster in. But... There's plenty of other far more interesting small bars in the area, I recommend you go to ANY others in the area.

The best part of our meal was the bottled beer. The Mongolian beef was not cooked well, it was just soft and soggy in its sauce, which was overly sweet. It came out on a fajita platter sizzling, so truly impressive that it turned out as mushy as it did. There was a lot of potential for that dish to taste better. The stir fried noodles tasted like they had been cooked well at one point, but then frozen, reheated, and rinsed with water to remove any potential flavor that once existed. Despite the restaurant being mostly empty when we arrived, we were seated right in between two other occupied tables, which made it feel like we were all at one big dinner together instead of on our own separate date nights. The people working were very nice - just wish the food was better! This meal was one of our first meals in Sydney and made us really worried that all of our meals here would be overpriced and tasteless - thankfully, there are better options out there.

I like the way they do the lo mai gai. Smaller portions, devided between 3 wrappers instead of the usual 2. So you get more filling to rice ratio. Plus they wrap the race in parchment paper before wrapping in the lotus leaf, so it's much easier to peel apart. The trip was a little disappointing however. The flavor was very good but good, but should have been cooked a bit longer, as some of the pieces were still quite chewy. I patiently waited for the egg custard to come out, as they were still baking them. Worth the wait, they were perfect! Light flaky crust, and perfectly light and tender egg custard. Plus, they were the "normal" palm size tart...not those mini ones, that many places switched to, to save money. Honestly, these were the best I have had anywhere! As I was leaving at 10:45, the place was buzzing and almost full. They were also bringing out many more items, such as stuffed bell pepper (with shrimp) and stuffed egg plant (with pork). They also had special carts that would make stir fry noodles or steamed vegy at your table. Makes it feel like Hong Kong, which was the last place I saw these, in the early '90s.
