Today, I had an unfortunate experience with two BART station attendants at the Millbrae station. To be clear, nothing egregious happened -- it wasn't discriminatory or overtly hostile -- but the interaction was so unhelpful and dismissive that it made me question BART's training standards and the role these attendants are meant to play. I recently moved near the Millbrae station and was looking into BART's bike lock options so I could bike to the station and ride to work. After arriving during an off-peak hour, I approached the station attendants' booth to ask about how the BART bike lockers work. Now, to give you more context, these station attendants were not really that busy. This was an off-peak time, there was no one really at the booth, and honestly they were just looking at each other not even facing the window and overall shooting the crap. I went up to them, and it took a while for them to notice me, but eventually after 30 seconds the white woman ended up coming to the glass. I asked the woman, "Do you know anything about the bike stations? I just moved here and wanted to get more information." She responded that she had no idea how they worked and that she'd go online. That is a reasonable response - she redirected me. Personally, though, I was perplexed that she didn't know... from first principles, these people are here I imagine a few hours a day and I thought they'd know how their station works. But you can't expect everyone to know everything. What made me more annoyed was after - she said BART has zero dealings with bike locks and completely separate. I would've accepted this answer, but after I walked I away, with a quick Google search, 5 seconds later, found that BART Station Locked Parking is actually BART sponsored or at least mentioned on the website. I then went back and said, "It turns out they are a part of BART." She said something along the lines of, "That's your problem". At that point, I asked, "Okay, just for reference in the future, what are the things I can come to you for help with?" She abruptly said she was done talking and shut off her microphone and went back to chit chatting with her co-worker. I tried to clarify, asking, "Could I ask you about trains, lines, or timings if I needed - as in, what can you help me with if I needed?" -- but she turned away, left the mic off. Her coworker looked at me like a zoo animal and laughed after I asked what questions I could ask them. Pic of the lady attendant turning her back / muting her mic. And her partner laughing. I found this to be an extremely disappointing interaction. When I turned to the station attendants with a question - who I thought would be stewards of the BART Station - turned it out to be a very humiliating experience. I looked on the BART website, and part of their mission is to hire people to "make the best transit system in the world". I'm extremely disappointed that it seemed to me, they didn't really give a crap about helping anyone. By the end of it, I walked away and found the information I needed on my own. Still, it was frustrating knowing that even if I had questions about basic travel or service, the station attendant refused to engage. There are always two sides to a story, and I've tried to recount mine objectively. I was confrontational about what I could ask -- but I guess it wasn't "worth their time". Overall, it was an unhelpful and discouraging experience. At the very least, I expected a professional response such as, "I'm not sure, but let me check the website," or "Here's where you can find that information." Instead, my questions about what questions I could ask were met with the mic being turned off and laughter from the other attendant. We used BART for a few days when visiting San Francisco. 1 Where am I? The BART red line train from SFO to Powell did not have a next station sign or announcement to tell us which station the train is approaching! Info is particularly important for the SFO line, because people arriving at an airport may not be familiar with the layout of the city. Some other trains had a good announcement and displays. 2 Some routes were seriously noisy: in the tunnel approaching Embarcadero from the north, it briefly reached 100 decibels (dBA) and was usually about 92-93 dBA. 3 Several times, we loaded just enough money onto the Clipper card according to the posted fares and then could not exit because we owed an extra 25c! So, the posted fares may have been 25c too low. This must be a recurring issue, as shown because the employee often came up and paid 25c to let us exit. read more

so you would think it would be simple enough to take a bar train from San Francisco to Millbrea, but you would be wrong on a nice sunny Sunday they decided wanted to ruin anybody's trip there first of all they didn't have the postage Sunday service. They had their own made up service where when one got to the San Francisco stop it was 45 minutes. The train that of course didn't go to Millbrea because they didn't have any Millbrea service that day. It went to the once that showed up and passengers were at the airport. They had to wait another 40 minutes for the train to take them from the airport to Millbrea once that and the passengers boarded the train at the airport it just sat there for 15 minutes without going anywhere for no reason if it wasn't for all the airport debris a person could've walked there. The employees were clueless. They gave no mention of anything it nice that they can't even let you know when you're supposed to out the window. so if it wasn't a big enough inconvenience for the people that took the train from to the airport to wait for the train Millbrea they held up that train that those people waited for for another train to show so those people didn't have to wait, which made the people that were on the train that had to wait feel like suckers isn't that Worst service I hope they go out of business. It's an unreliable transportation service; you don't know when you'll get to work, or even if you'll get there at all. If you need to catch a flight, be careful, you might miss your flight. It's not cheap, but since there's no competition, they have no commitment to their users. And if you need to pay for a parking space, it's extremely expensive. I know what crack smells like--not by choice. It's a bitter, acrid smell. Why do I know this? Because I've been around so many people smoking crack on BART and frankly, I'm not a fan! Can you get second hand crack? I sincerely hope not. BART is a decent option to get you to downtown centers and key neighborhoods around the Bay Area but holy hell somebody needs to clean it up! The needles, crack, violence and occasional indecent exposure are enough for me to avoid BART unless it's absolutely the best option. Parking in the city can be rough and sometimes nobody wants to give me a ride to the airport, so Im not gonna front like I don't hop on the occasional BART train and like it's not increasing access to travel in the bay. I'm just saying, it would be nice for it to be less nasty. Another issue is that BART could run a smidge later so those going out and drinking can use it to get home after the bars close. There's always delays in Lake Merritt and West Oakland stops. Not a reliable option, even if you get up early there's always something going down. For a while they had Bart police but that only lasted for a few months. If they keep on having this issues, why not resolve? And if you're not going to resolve it, might as well make it a free transportation because it's ridiculous, you pay and yet no good service is provided. Train cars are always dirty, there's always free riders on the cars and most importantly you have to constantly be on survival mode because it's not even a safe transportation. BART has recently installed taller, glass doors at the gates in some bart stations to prevent people from jumping over the gate. Great! Well, at least until people start trailing right behind you while you tap yourself in. This is the worst transportation experience in the world and we have taken public transportation in many large cities. My family came here for vacation from New York. My son got his leg stuck in the door that you tap the card through. The woman named Suzanne operating it did not care it was stuck and went on to ramble about how he was going to break the door while his leg was stuck. It also took 30 minutes to get cards. after we made it to the train some homeless man came in and yelled at us "to please give me money", the kids were scared. When we finally got out I got stuck in behind the doors there was no person in the booth to help me. If you have any kids do not come here. This is a traumatic experience. We spent 20 bucks for that! I have ridden on Bart for years and it is constantly breaking down or malfunctioning... and it's not just the trains which are almost always having a technical issue but also the escalators, turn styles, clipper card kiosks. For local people of the bay area: Expect an extra 10-20 minutes in delays on your morning commute (longer if God forbid the weather is over 80 degrees). There is no greater way to keep tabs on the pulse of a nation than by riding its public transportation, and let me just say, the United States appears to be doing very, very well. I know there are those out there who are, for one snobbish reason or another, hesitant to take such modes of travel. In light of this troubling attitude, I am willing to help BART appeal to this potential client base by putting a positive spin on a few of the less initially... attractive aspects of their service I encountered during a recent trip. Now, was the interior of the train covered with a wide variety of debris, including (but not limited to) socks, hypodermic needles, and a half-eaten chapstick? Yes, but this can easily be reframed. Rather than advertising their trains as "filthy," BART can say that each car is "a mobile community art project, filled with emotion and creative urban collaging." Did the car smell like it housed twenty-five feral cats suffering simultaneously from rabies, mange, and food poisoning? Yes, but this can be repackaged as "bringing the sights and smells of San Francisco with you as you go." Were half of the seat cushions inexplicably ripped off their chairs, leaving rusty springs exposed? Sure - "Each car has been redecorated in its own original way to keep with the changing times." The man behind me who flailed around wildly and ate things off the floor and then attempted to smoke a crackpipe mere inches behind my head? "You're almost always bound to meet a local guide with intriguing recommendations." The complete lack of security presence or anything that would make a rider feel even remotely safe in these conditions? Bart in General is a great way to get around the Bay Area. With the introduction of Clipper on Apple Watch I no longer have to get my Wallet out in order to pay my fares. I simply double tap the side button on my watch and select Clipper. Wave my watch at the touch pad and the fare gates open. Makes it easy for travel. The bad is that there is a lot of people cheating the fare gate system. For example at Hayward BART when I exited in the handicap section of the station someone took advantage of the open gate and walked through. And at Bayfair when I used the elevator to enter the station because I don't fare well on some escalators someone took advantage of the open gate and left the station without paying. So BART is really not enforcing these fare cheaters while the fares continue to increase gradually. The attendants at the stations seem to not care. The only way the crackdowns happen is when actual BART police is at the station. When I visited San Diego and used the Trolley Service there were active fare inspectors on every ride I was on to make sure people paid and if they did not have a valid fare they had to vacate the paid area. Bart could learn a lot from them if they invested in active fare inspectors. read more

This update is about two months overdue. On July 1, 2018, at approximately 3:10 PM, I boarded the Dublin Pleasanton BART train at the Fruitvale Station with destination to the last stop in Pleasanton for the Alameda County Fair. Much to my disgust when I entered one of the cars, I could not sit in a certain section. I had to walk down to the other end of the car while the train was moving to find an available clean seat. What I saw was atrocious and the first thought that ran through my mind was why are they not doing maintenance inspection on these cars? Why even put this car in service when the seats are heavily damaged? I don't consider the condition these seats are in a safe one for passengers. read more

It gets you where you need to go. Security has increased. Trains are cleaner than before. New trains provide more support for standing -- less seating, but it's a reasonable compromise. Seats are better. Sound filtering is better than before. Customer service is relatively prompt, but needs improvement on friendliness and attention to customer concern. I braved BART today! Not bad! I was preparing to take pictures to add to my friends "Bart Angst" file.... But to my relief... I found none. I rode a long way from Ashby to SFO during morning rush so there were a lot of opportunities. I had a seat! The car didn't smell bad...nor good. There were no delays! And people filed on and off without any riffraff. BART deserves a better rap... And it needs new seats with wipe-able, indestructible, recycled plastic fabric! I recently took BART for the first time since the 1970's when it opened to get from SFO to Berkeley. It was so efficient and I am so grateful that it exists. However, it was not the best experience people-wise and that is not so much a reflection of BART as it is of the times. A crack addict rode near me and scratched, genuflected and spewed some kind of dander all over the place while panhandlers sauntered about asking for handouts.
