The volunteers working inside were wonderful to talk with, and very knowledgeable. Everything was functional inside the museum. The models and craftsmanship dedicated to the models were superb. I also really like how local all the artifacts were. My husband and I have been to a few air, space, and war memorials. This one was interesting to connect all the dots amongst the locals who served our country. We spent about an hour inside. The museum is free to enter. We purchased a few items and donated to the museum. We loved our experience here!

He was on-hand to answer questions as they arose, but left us to make our way through the museum on a self-guided tour that covered much of the history of the twentieth century. Great individual exhibits and the models that volunteers have contributed help bring the history alive in a dynamic fashion. The docent clearly enjoys sharing the history and his enthusiasm is infectious. Great for an afternoon outing!

There was a small interesting fossil display with information about the fossils (which was my favorite display). A special exhibit featuring locally handcrafted furniture was near the entrance. The rooms progress with artifacts and stories from Johnson County first settlement through present day. Downstairs, there is a genealogy center, with staff eager to help. The museum relies on volunteers. The staff was super friendly and recommended nearby places to visit and eat. She also provided information that I was looking for about a historical building. She was knowledgeable and 5 star helpful. There is a small gift shop with interesting Indiana books, shirts, etc. (I picked up a couple books.) Memberships to the museum are available. There is no admission fee, but they encourage donations. We found nearby free street parking. Worth a visit if you live in Johnson County or tracing genealogy.

The building is historic in its own right and the exhibits are arranged roughly chronologically with staff on hand to answer questions. There is a local history and genealogy collection on the lower level while the upper level can be used for events. It made for a pleasant afternoon outing to better acquaint ourselves with our new home.

Both of our parents served in the Air Force, so we grew up with an appreciation of military equipment and bases. We visited the park on the 4th of July weekend, which seemed like a good tribute. The park is open during daylight hours and is a self guided tour. In the center of the park is a Memorial to all the various military groups that served at Camp Atterbury. A bronze statue of a U.S. soldier stands as the focal point facing a pool. Behind the soldier are insignias of the honored military groups. The pool has fish and there is a machine to buy food for them. The fish swim by the machine and look up longingly. You need a quarter to buy the food and I didn't have one, so I was sorry to disappoint them. Special bricks around the pool are carved with the names of people that served at Camp Atterbury. Two paved walkways circle the park with pieces of retired military equipment. Plaques describe each vehicle. A Huey helicopter, M47 Patton tank and an M1 Abrams tank are among the several dozen vehicles at the Museum. My brother loved the little walk around. He took photos and talked military. Recently, Camp Atterbury hosted a number of Afghan refugees. A painted mural welcoming the refugees stands in the park. An old railroad car used to hold a gift shop, but that has been moved to the main museum (which was closed during our visit). A nice set of restrooms stands on the grounds. The walkways are wheelchair accessible. Parking is free. The museum is free but donations are appreciated. There is a box for donations near the entrance. The museum would be a good visit for a veteran or anyone that served at Camp Atterbury.

The museum is fairly humble in terms of size and displays. Don't expect any new-fangled interactive digital kiosks to entice the young 'uns to start mandolin lessons. Still, it is four or five rooms of bluegrass cool. The costume, instrument, and poster collections are the real highlights in the museum. The cabin just outside the museum and the festival/camping grounds are also worth seeing. If my memory is correct, the admission fee for the museum was $4 per adult. The lady at the desk / museum store cash register was friendly and knowledgeable. Since there were no events going on in the festival grounds, she offered to let us drive around to see the stages, cabins, and an great old touring truck. Before leaving, we spent a half hour and $30 in the museum store. They had lots of great countrified and bluegrass-themed gifts, shirts, books, CDs, etc. Next time I head toward Brown County to see the autumn leaves, I will definitely stop back in. Not that this is what it is all about, but I got more twitter and Facebook mileage out of photos from here than all the trees-on-hills shots put together.
