My son and I met to catch up on his adventures on the road and enjoy a sandwich together. We hit the market around 11, just as some of the vendors were switching over to lunch. We were able to sample some products while winding our way through a healthy crowd of people who would look at home in an upscale Target or antiquing in a small town on their way to their weekend lake house. By comparison, Dirk and I looked like roadies in some Viking Metal band sittingf in a corner with gyo and beef juice in our beards, but we enjoyed the experience AND the food. If you want the market, you can find curious culinary options from Nordic hot sauces [Pikku Piru] to gourmet mushrooms [Bennett Run]. Dirk chose a falafel from Grill & Gyro which was fat and delicious coming with fresh cut fries in a quantity too big to finish. I enjoyed a "Surrender the Fresh Dip" which was pricey but worth every penny for the tender, seasoned beef on a toasted roll with superb au jus. While I am used to buying my farmer's market pretzels from the Amish, I enjoyed a Foltz original pretzel, though I never understood the pairing of pretzels and lemonade so I declined that suggestion by the nice lady behind the counter. Regardless of what you crave, everyone is personable and passionate about their signature foods. They know it is a competitive market with so much to choose from, but I was happy to see so many people at various spots conducting themselves like regulars, just as happy to chat as have lunch with their favorite vendors. Parking is plentiful and the location is easily accessible just off of Chocolate Avenue It is clean and bright, inviting even in the tightly-packed center corridors that hide some of the more interesting kiosks and treats. My only complaint is the lack of seating. There's so much to choose from but not a lot of space to enjoy it. Dirk and I had to sit at a 4-seater and share with a family of 8 who packed themselves into a corner. Given that the market is only open Thursday to Saturday, plan for patience or go early for breakfast. I was able to sample some wares that were going off sale and they were delicious. This farmers/flea market has been open for a couple years now. It's a year round market which is…read moreopen from sunrise to 2PM on Sundays. Of course, the warmer days of the spring and summer bring out more vendors. There's a large number of vendors with your typical flea market find and there's always a few markets selling fresh produce. I've usually been there around noon and some of the vendors are already thinking about packing up and as a result they're willing to bargain. I've found a couple really great furniture pieces that with a little work or reupholstering have turned into classics. If you looking to furnish an apartment on the cheap or just looking for some specialty tool it's worth a trip. It's on the grounds of the old amusement park so it's sometimes a little haunting to be walking around the abandoned and crumbling rides. Last time I was there I overhead a little boy who's comment to his dad really summed up the place best. "They closed down the park and turned it into a yard sale."

The market itself is actually split into 2 parts. You have the Garage sale that's actually IN the…read morepark, and then you have the huge Yard sale that's going on in the Parking lot out back. I rarely, if ever, go to the lower market anymore because it is mostly just crap that no one can seem to sell. Every now and then I hear about a deal that someone stumbled across buying from some guy who acquired some item due to some family death or misfortune and now it's theirs for the asking price of 15 dollars, or maybe 10, or maybe 5, or whatever you can haggle with. It's pretty standard here to haggle. If you just sit in stare at an item, most of the time, they will do the haggling for you right there, saving your vocal cords valuable strain. Literally watch the prices come down while you wait. So anyway, like I was saying, the second level of the farmers market it where the action is. Fruit stands, antiques, tools, odds&ends, nick-nacks, pretty much anything you would be looking for you can find here, and it is in better shape then below. It's almost like the people down below are selling their wares for free, and the tables up top are paying to be there so they take a little more pride in making sure things look a little better. I've seen everything from shovels, to motorcycles to Nintendo Wiis' sold here. Come early and you're bound to find something cheap that you may not exactly need, but wouldn't pay full price for if you did. This is the perfect spot to get it. Just remember to bring cash, most of these people don't have credit card machines.

Food doesn't get any more fresh unless you pick it yourself! Prices are great and it is so important to support your local farmers.

This is my 100th review so I'm making it a good one. I wanted to do something special for this…read moremilestone and I couldn't figure out what to do . . . then I looked at my counter and saw the lovely white box that I picked up today. It's filled to the brim with amazing organic vegetables and fruits. Spiral Path is a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm and every year (with a few exceptions like last year when we spent all summer in Kazakhstan) we write a big check in late winter/early spring and then enjoy many, many weeks of produce delivered to a location near our house. This week's box includes: a watermelon, sweet corn, onions, heirloom tomatoes, regular tomatoes, purple bell peppers, green bell peppers, these smaller sweet orange peppers, cabbage, and summer squash. The produce is processed soon before it hits the trucks for delivery. So, everything is fresh. You can actually get heirloom tomatoes because they don't have to travel far. The produce always tastes great and it's organic. You can definitely tell the difference with organic and non-organic. I was skeptical but I'm now a believer. We missed the big picnic this year, but we hope to make at least one of their open farm days where you can pick up extra produce and even pick some out in the fields. Every week there is a printed, one page insert that usually includes a list of the items in the box, an note from the owners about what is going on in the fields (good and bad), a recipe or two, and announcements. The box contents vary over the season . . . spring includes spring onions, small potatoes, herbs, lettuce, spinach, etc. Then you move into summer and the melons, squashes, onion, tomatoes, zucchini, etc. Finally, in the late summer and fall you have winter squashes, kale, cabbages, broccoli, etc. Of course, you are warned . . . by buying-into the farm you take the ups and the downs. If there's a drought, you might end up without lettuce because it dies in the field. However, you also get the benefits of good growing seen in the amazing foods that are tucked into a sturdy white cardboard box, and then delivered to a location nearby. The kids love picking up the box and seeing what's inside. So, happy 100th review to me and two thumbs up to Spiral Path Farm, the owners Mike & Terra Brownback, their families and workers who tend the fields and grow the produce, the people who pick/process/pack the items, the people who drive the trucks to deliver the boxes, and the many people who also buy-in to this CSA and make Spiral Path Farm possible.

The first two years we did a medium share and the last two years we have had the full share (a larger share). Each week we receive between 6 -8 different vegetables/fruits. They include recipes for their vegetables each week too (which is great for those of us who love to eat but can't cook without a recipe). This week we received bok choy, cabbage, onions, plum tomatoes, radishes, califlower, broccoli, kale and baby white potatoes. Yum! They pick the produce and pack it right before it is taken for delivery. Terra and her team are responsive whenever you have a question. I simply can't recommend them highly enough!
