I generally try to avoid Karns due to most items being more expensive than the other local grocers. However, their meat is way better than anything offered by all other grocery stores I've shopped. Last week I bought two amazing prime NY strip steaks for $17 that were absolutely incredible and delicious and also very fairly priced. I plan to return here more often just to buy meat for this reason alone. The rest of the items on this visit were mostly slightly more than Giant and Weis while a couple items were less. This location is better than the old small store across the plaza and parking is never an issue. Idiot drivers in the parking lot is another story... This Lemoyne location is convenient and located next to the west shore plaza and west shore farmers market. The store is a good size and checkout is usually quick. I buy birthday cakes here @ least once a month due to either birthdays at work or @home! Well last week 10/15 was our last time using Karns! Our cake(Vanilla &white traditional icing) was disgusting! Our cake was for sure"out of date" It was so dry it fell apart in crumbles! We all took one bite and thew the rest of it away! I tried calling 3x to the bakery and due to different schedules no1 answered. I took to emailing corporate. Woman by name of Nicole took my complaint asking for more details. You now get the whole package straight from the processing plant, put on the scale, bag ,liquids and all. Very upsetting seeing chicken put in the Display case with feathers still on. We stopped in for chicken wings to make at home. Fast, friendly service at the meat counter. They always have great meat sales and specials so check each week. Our wings were big and when we made them they seemed very tough and the meat was hard to get off the bone. It was odd for chicken wings. Other items in store seem more expensive than other stores in the area but the meat specials arr good. We thought the parking lot was dark. Still new to the area, but checking out this Karns it's one of the nicer ones we've been to. The store is clean and compliant to CDC guideline. The products themselves are pretty similar to any other Karns, which is why we use Karns primarily for meat. The cashier we had was very courteous and even asked if my wife used a different gender specific pronoun (due to how she was dressed) because he didn't want to be offensive. During Lent we get the fish dinners at Karns every Friday. we purchased 2 fish dinners last Friday around 4:30 pm. We tried to eat the fish and had to throw it away. honestly, it tasted like it had been sitting in the steamer all day, tough and just old. it was disgusting. We won't be back for the fish dinners. I've been to the Etters location four times. I ordered ham off the bone from the deli, specifically asking if it was the honey version. I have now thrown out 3 pounds of honey ham...I ASKED specifically NOT to have honey ham. I also purchased 3 lbs of chicken. When I opened the bag THE NEXT DAY, the chicken was spoiled. I don't think the produce is the best. I love me some Karns. This location is one of my favorites because its a beautiful store. Its bright, well organized, and has everything I need under one roof. The thing that prompted me to post this review was a situation I had last weekend. So I am on Karns mailing list and they sent out an e mail about their upcoming lobster sale! $7.99 a lb for live lobsters. You had to pre order them. I forwarded the e mail to my mom who then told my grandfather who said he was going to order some for my whole family and invited them over to my house. Cut to Friday and my mom went to pick up these lobsters that he said he ordered at the Jonestown road store. There were no lobsters because he never ordered any. My mom called me in a panic and I told her to ask if they had any extra (which they didn't) and if other stores had it. Hershey did not and Lemoyne didn't answer. She was so sad. So I went onto Karns' website and went to contact us and selected the Lemoyne store and let them know my plight and if there were any lobsters in any of there stores I'd love to buy them to save my dinner and also save me from getting them full price at Giant. Within 5 minutes the phone rang and it was a Todd from Karns and he told me he found 8 at the boiling springs location and that he could put them on the truck to get to Lemoyne by the next day! After we hung up and I gushed with happiness he called again and had found me 4 more. So Saturday we had 12 lobsters waiting for us at the Lemoyne store. The Jonestown road called us Saturday too saying they had 3 from orders that weren't picked up and we grabbed those as well and my family had the feast that they were promised without knowing what we all went through to get them haha. Walked in the store at 8:57 PM. I get meats only from Karns. I asked for chicken breast filleted. I watched the young man pull chicken breast from a case that was sitting out while everyone was cleaning. Most definitely warm chicken. There was NO CUSTOMERS ANYWHERE IN THE STORE. He brought the chicken over to a cutting board, pushes the wash rag bucket out of his way, pushes a spray bottle out of his way. Puts the chicken in between all this craziness on the table. Not really sure what the hype is over Karn's, or this location. I have heard from a couple of people praise Karn's for their meats and other offerings. For me, I find the store dated. Additionally, I find the products they offer to be average at best -- even their meat and seafood department. I have been here on multiple occasions trying to figure out what the mystique is surrounding this place; but I just can't seem to find it. Produce Department: I find their produce department to be average, or even slightly below average in terms of quality and availability. I have come in twice when avocados were on sale, and they were completely wiped out. I have come in on more than one occasion to get fresh basil to find out that they were out. I have come in on more than one occasion to be met with an empty display case of something that should be readily abundant. I have never had so many issues with a produce department. In addition to the regular unavailability of items, I do not find their quality to be worth what I am paying. I typically am more satisfied at Giant or Wegmans. Produce: 2 / 5 Meat/Seafood: Again, hate to be the bad guy here, but I am not really a fan. They tend to have some decent prices, on occasion; but those are typically tied to some ridiculous sale where I have to buy 10,000 lbs of whatever it is I need. If I wanted to buy in bulk, I would just get a BJs, Costco, or Sam's Club membership. Additionally, I do not find the quality of their meat to be soooo much better than either Giant or Wegmans. Lastly, the department always makes the whole store smell bad. Not sure if their air circulation is bad, or what. Meat: 3 / 5 Deli: Hate their deli. Everything is pre-sliced in extremely THICK pieces. I like my meat shaved. This is about as far from that as it can get. Despite that, they get some redemption from some very good prices -- especially on ham. Deli: 2 / 5 Bakery: Very disappointed here. I am a bakery snob. I love fresh bread. This bread always seems old. Not only that, but it isn't very good. Donuts are the same way. They are big, but don't taste nearly as good as anywhere else. Bakery: 2 / 5 Regular Grocery: This is one of the only places I have found to sell large quantities of Peanut Oil, so that is nice. They are also one of the few retailers to sell Pepperoni Pizza combos (I know they are gross, but I like them dammit). Although their selection seems to be slightly less voluminous than other area stores, they do have some items you cannot get anywhere else Grocery: 3 / 5 Frozen/Dairy: The same goes for Dairy and Frozen. They have some brands that you simply cannot get elsewhere -- and those brands tend to be pretty good. Their selection of cheeses and other dairy items is much more limited than any other store in the region though. Frozen/Dairy: 3 / 5 Final Thoughts: Overall, I would consider Karn's to be of a lower tier grocery store on all levels when compared to the other area stores. Giant and Wegmans are undoubtedly better, and not so much more busy that it would warrant me stopping at Karn's to avoid the high traffic stores. For me, the stores in this region rank as follows: 1. Wegmans 2. Giant (close second) 3.) Karns 4.) Weis (Very close to Karn's though). Ultimately I am rounding-up to a 3 because I have always generally had friendly service from all of the departments. read more

I enjoy this Karns and go there sometimes when I'm in the area anyhow. When you step into the store you feel like you've been transported to the 80s... don't let that scare you off. Personally, I enjoy it because it reminds me of grocery shopping when I was a kid. The one minus I'll say for this place is that the produce department is really small, and I rarely get anything there unless it's some featured sale (although I WILL say that some of the summer produce they get in has been very fresh, and cheap. Why hello there, 2 pints of ultra-fresh blueberries for $3...) The three major pluses of this store for me have been the bakery, the deli/meat section, and the general pleasantness of the employees. (WAY better than the Giant on Union Deposit)They do all their own meat prep, and a lot of it seems like a great deal. I've also encountered a lot of really nice people working in the bakery department, and their toffee cookies are my weakness. They say Karns is for meats. I agree. It's nice to have a butcher so close to home. But, I'm not just reviewing the butcher side...I am looking at Karns as a whole... If karns put as much thought into the rest of its store as it did in the meat dept, we'd have a grocery store that would be comparible to Giant. When you walk in, it smells like a butchers. Dead meat, hints of blood. A smell you expect at a butchers. You go to a butchers, you grab your meat cuts and you walk out. But I really get turned off when I am trying to buy other groceries and still smell the butcher. Anyhow, smell aside, karns has most of the things you need. Produce could look better, and be stocked in a more presentable way. This place is my butcher. In and out with my cut of meat. Highly reccommend JUST FOR THAT. read more

Just okay. So many grocery stores have upped their offerings, Karns has been left a bit behind. The prices seem to be a little more expensive than some larger grocery store chains. The do sell sushi, so that was a bonus for me. Overall, the service was extremely friendly and I like supporting a family-run business versus a large chain. read more

I love coming to this Karns. Their selection is great and prices reflect their quality. I am a huge fan of their meat counter and the fresh meat their serve here. I think lines can sometimes be a little long but they usually open up more registers to deal with this. I will keep coming here because of their fresh meat and produce. read more

The best meats ever. I travel about 30 minutes to buy meats from Karns. The quality is great, and the prices (with their sales) is outstanding. Yeah, to get that great price, I have to buy upwards of 10 lbs or more of some items, but that's why I have a freezer! This is a pretty basic supermarket. My m-in-law says that the canned crab they carry is almost as good as the fresh can down the street at the West Shore Farmers' Market, and cheaper. I can't attest to that, but the produce seemed pretty basic. It's an older store that doesn't look like grocery store margins have enabled them to keep up appearances, and it looks a bit worn, somewhat like the customers shopping there on a recent Friday noon. The building is small, but their meat is reliably fresh with plenty of attention from the butchers to get precisely what you want. The produce section, while small compared to the large stores, has everything I need. They also have a bulk dry foods section that has stacked plastic containers of things like nuts, trail mix, and many candy favorites. I wouldn't go there expecting to find the vitamins I like or my favorite shampoo. Because of the small size of the place, the selections are small. I haven't been to Karns for a while and I needed to get some chicken and I was close by. I had a uneasy feeling but I couldn't remember why so I went ahead and bought the chicken. I ordered 8 thighs by count. They packed my order behind the counter so I couldn't see what they were doing. As soon as I got the chicken out I remembered why I quit shopping there. The variation in size ranged from about 6 ounces to over a pound. I guess I am either supposed to put the chicken in the oven at different times or eat one overcooked or one raw. This is the same issue I had the last time I shopped there. When it happened before I called the manager. He basically said they but a lot of chicken and they really don't have time to look at it when they are selling it. You have to take what we give you. If you are ok with that by all means shop there. Since it moved into its beautiful new building, this Karns is the best grocery store around! I live in the neighborhood so I might be biased, but unless you are not a fan of easy parking, a spacious store, friendly staff, and a REAL butcher counter, then this is the store for you. The prices are a tad higher than elsewhere and the selection might be a bit smaller, but I am definitely willing to deal with those things to patronize a local business like Karns (as opposed to a huge international conglomerate like the one that owns that OTHER grocery store chain). This store even has a fresh sushi counter with two chefs at the ready. The sushi was a little pricey but it was just as good as a restaurant! I love this Karns, they have won my family's regular business with this awesome store! read more

The store is so run down and old, it desperately needs fixed up. The smell is also awful. It reeks! The prices also never match the weekly flyers they put out. I had to have a cashier and 2 managers try to figure out why the stupid English muffins weren't ringing up buy 2 get one free. Not to mention that the one morning I went in to get some donuts and creamer for work and they only had 2 checkout lines open, and it was almost 9:30 in the morning! The poor cashier who waited on me was so stressed out; I felt so bad for her. When I got to the front of the line and asked why they only had 2 lines open, she said their corporate office said it's because of ObamaCare, even though this was last summer before that went into effect.
