Seeking to escape the crowds of San Marco, with no plan in mind my wife and I happily got lost wandering through Venice. We ended up in the Castello district of Venice and eventually on the Isola di San Pietro (Island of St Peter). Here is a lovely old church, Basilica di San Pietro di Castello, i.e. St. Peter's Basilica (not to be confused with the Rome version!). A beautiful domed church, although we could not see the dome from our vantage point (best seen from the water). There is a €3 entrance fee.
A large church, this was the main Cathedral of Venice until 1807 when that honor transferred to St. Mark's Church. It was heavily damaged during World War I firebombing but was restored in the 1970s.
San Pietro was reverentially quiet as we made our way around, admiring the art, architecture and side chapels. There were a handful of local parishioners praying, few if any tourists. A reference card is available that illustrates the numerous attractions to see.
The impressive white campanile is notable because it *leans*!
