Truly gorgeous cathedral. Lovely to look around and maybe light a candle for a loved one. Seemed rather pricy to enter but it must be expensive for the upkeep of this place. Unusual to see balconies in a church like this. Large organ - would have loved to hear it. They have light shoes that must be lovely to see but they were sold out when we could go.
It's old It's grand It's breathtaking We passed by this gorgeous structure countless times when in Vieux Montreal. We bought tickets for Aura one night and it was well worth the money. They ask that you don't take photos or videos and people actually abided by the rules! You get to hang out in the pews before the show and the show was stunning, it's truly amazing what the crew does with the lights and music highlighting the different features of the cathedral! Whether you're coming to visit during the day or at night for the show, it's a must see!
I will join the many other reviews on this page and say that the Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal is a must-see attraction when in the city, especially if it's your first time. Personally, I was not looking to attend a service here, but after doing some research I saw there were times the Basilica was open to the public for browsing; that seemed more my speed, so I made plans to check it out. I decided to attend the Basilica twice - once during the day to freely browse and once at night for their light show. It's almost hard to describe how beautiful it is, I found myself constantly snapping pics and staring at all of the gorgeous architecture. The church has multiple levels, but you're limited to the ground floor which houses more than enough to see. The day ticket gives you free reign to browse, take non-flash photography, or just sit and reflect/pray/take it all in. Visiting at night is a little more structured. Called the AURA Experience, this is essentially a 30-ish minute show where the interior of the cathedral lights up in harmony with instrumental music. This was great - while I felt the cathedral was alive in its own right, the light show really brought this to another level. Conveniently located near other attractions in Old Montreal, the Basilica was definitely a highlight of my trip to the city. Even with only two trips, I discovered something new during the latter one, so I will definitely be back.
Basilique Notre-Dame de Montreal (BN) is a beautiful place of worship as well as the home of Aura light show. BN was built in 1829 in a neo-gothic style. We went to the 7 PM Aura light show. Lights danced throughout the basilica with structures being highlighted throughout the building. The aura light show was spectacular! No filming was allowed of the light show.
6/2/25 - even while it's under renovation it's still an amazing cathedral. The interior decor is a feast for the eyes. It's hard to believe that people have the skills to carve stone like that. The delicacy of the carving that supports tons of stone and glass, all around you. We went for the laser light show in the evening. The light show turns the interior of the cathedral into a magical place. Tip: buy your ticket ahead of time. And don't be discouraged if you see a VERY long line, outside the cathedral, it moves very fast. There's a musician who plays a guitar out in the courtyard, which helps to pass the time. Don't sit too close to the altar or you might miss most of the exciting light show projected on the walls and ceiling. It is an amazing 20 minutes or so of music and lasers; a feast for the eyes and ears. It's worth a ticket price!
Such a beautiful church in a nice part of Montreal. There is so much to see and read about on the 24 stop self-guided tour. This is only of the main sanctuary area. Inside there are so many stories that paint a picture (literally) of the building founders and important Biblical events. We visited on Christmas so was great to see several ties to Jesus from birth to crucifixion. Where this could be better: 1) The line to purchase tickets in-person was long and standing in 5 degree cold so we decided to buy online standing outside the church. This process seemed to take just as long and it was so cold that my fingers stopped working part way through. Super frustrating they have absolutely no outdoor heaters in an area filled with hundreds of people. With as much money as they charge we wondered why they don't offer this feature in the freezing conditions. Once inside I was so miserable that I had to sit in a pew for about ten minutes just warning my hands back up. Tip: there are numerous heat registers around the perimeter I didn't know about until later. 2) They close very early at 4:30. We had just got there at 3:15 and after purchasing tickets there was only about an hour to tour. We got through only half of the 24 stops. 3) When I was asked to leave I asked security if we could get a pass to come back tomorrow to see the rest of it. The answer was NO, that they sell the last ticket at 4p and we should have known they closed at 4:30. Zero accommodation, which is disappointing given the cost of admission to a church. Maybe I'll come to mass early just to see the rest. 4) The exterior of the church is being renovated on one of two main towers so photos show a large box of scaffolding. 5) You can't access the second story to see the beautiful stain glass windows up there. Only the top portion is visible from downstairs and you are too far away to tell what you're looking at. 6) bathrooms are not easily accessible. Overall a very mediocre experience given we only saw half of what we paid to see. It's beautiful but definitely get there earlier than an hour before they close and highly recommend buying your tickets online prior to getting there.

They do charge for admission and tickets can be purchased on site or online via a QR code. When we arrived at opening time (10AM), there wasn't a line but by the time we were departing the line was pretty long. Visits to view the church and take pictures are, of course, limited to times when services are not in progress so definitely check the schedule or plan to be flexible.
When I looked at the basilica from the outside, I was not super impressed. The building seemed a bit plain especially after only recently seeing Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and Duomo in Milan. I know you really cannot compare to these world-renowned churches but unfortunately, your brain can't help but go there. After we walked inside, I changed my mind completely. The interior was stunning! I loved all the detailing, especially the fact that it looked like there were two layers of the church as it almost looked like a little building within the large domes. I also loved that they had all of these engravings around the sides of the aisles as well. I think the most impressive part was the elaborate side stairs which was stunning. The tickets are a bit steep as it is only one room but I do think this is a must visit if in Montreal.
A must see while in Montreal! The self-tour was worth it. The beauty of the church is breathtaking. Even though it said there was low availability of tickets, we were surprised how easy it was to move about and access the tour because it didn't seem too crowded, which was so nice. We were able to love at our pace and take everything in.
The ceiling here is absolutely breathtaking and intentionally invokes Sainte-Chapelle with its intricate details and deep blue star-filled panels. It's one of those spaces that instantly feels sacred and grand. We made sure to book tickets right when they opened in the morning, and that turned out to be a great decision. The space was quiet and nearly empty, which gave us time to really take in the atmosphere without the distraction of big crowds. I've heard it can get very busy later in the day, so going early is well worth it.
When I travel abroad, I like to visit churches and castles, and not museums (especially art museums). I've been to churches all over Europe and even South America. The Notre Dame Basilica might be the most beautiful church I have ever laid my eyes on. The amount of architectural details and the blue backdrop are nothing less than spectacular. Charging $16 Canadian Dollars was a little shocking considering other churches all over the globe allow free entrance, but it's not going to hold me back from giving 5 stars. I stayed inside the church for over an hour.
A beautiful cathedral. My daughter remarked that it is her favorite (so far) after visiting cathedrals in Europe. It is truly beautiful. Construction on part of the exterior when we visited. The entrance fee is a little expensive. We were not able to try Aura - the evening experience. read more

Simply stunning. In my personal opinion, there is no need to walk around and take pictures, just find a place to sit down and collect your thoughts. There are plenty of pictures on the web and if you truly wanted to share your experience you could pull those ones up. If you are visiting during non-mass times, order online ahead. read more
Still such an amazing tour of one of the most beautiful cathedrals I've ever visited. The parking is difficult but worth it and as you can see in my pictures, the colors are incredible! I recommend a visit any time of year and the city also has much to offer and so clean! read more

I have done a lot of travelling and been to a lot of churches and this one truly took my breath away. From the outside it's nothing I haven't seen similar of but once you walk inside it's just absolutely stunning. Definitely worth the price of admission read more

Tickets of about $16 CAD are required to visit. Check the website for early closings and mass times. I assume, you could attend mass/church for free. We bought the AURA Experience Combo offer ($48 CAD) which includes the AURA Experience-light show in the evening plus admission to the basilica the same day or another day. You get two separate tickets to scan. You will need to reserve an evening time to see the AURA show when you buy the tickets. It is $40 CAD just for the AURA experience, so it costs $8 instead of $16 to go to the cathedral during the day. After the AURA experience, you want walk around the basilica and see the statues, paintings on the sides but it is dimly lit, so you won't be able to see the paintings as well (it was a little hard to even see them in the daylight) and you won't be able to see the sunlight through the stained glass windows on the side. Since I didn't know we would be able to walk around afterwards, I did the combo ticket but in truth doing just the AURA experience and walking around the basilica afterwards would have been enough. When I went in the day, I did find the bathroom to the left of and behind the altar, go up the ramp to the other room, then down the two flights of stairs and went into the Chapel of St Jude which is on the right when you enter. It felt peaceful in there. Plan to arrive 30-45 minutes early if you want a good seat, if you get there before the doors open, just stand in line. We had gotten there 30 minutes early and sat on benches outside, but a whole bunch of people arrived and started going inside. I would say the first 3 sections from the altar (as counted using the pillars on the sides as marking points) are the best seats since you will be within the special effects lights projected on the ceiling around around you. Farther back or on the sides, you will not be in the special effects lighting but looking towards them. You are not allowed to take pictures or video the AURA experience, and there are people who will come and stop you. The statues on the altar are backlit by various colors during the show. I would say the experience is a cross between being immersed in a Disney movie with gold glittering lights swirling around you, colors and special effects moving around you with music to a trippy disco with the laser beams. There was one sequence with crashing waves which with the music may be a little frightening to children (no monsters though). The AURA experience was about 20 minutes. We entered around 8:40 pm and went directly to find seats. 9:13 pm announcements about no photos or videos then 9:35 pm, the show was over. Overall, it was an interesting, fun experience but I can't say I would do it again or felt closer to God after it. The basilica is much smaller than the Notre-Dame in Paris, so don't walk in expecting something of that scale. It was pretty with the arches and statues. There were so many statues and paintings with votive candles where you can use your credit card to make offerings for $10 CAD or more, it felt a bit of a money grab or for sinners to try and charge their way for heavenly intercession. I remember when lighting a candle used to be more donation based. I guess they don't want thousands of tourists lighting candles for free. read more
I was told that a visit to the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal was a must do when I took a solo trip to Montreal a few weeks ago, and I agree. The exterior of the basilica didn't knock my socks off (it is currently undergoing some construction and has some scaffolding that take away from the exterior beauty), but the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal is all about the interior. That did knock my socks off. So there are two ways you can see the basilica. You can view it during the day or you can attend an evening light show performance (typically two showings per day). I bought the joint ticket and did both (visited during the day and came back later that same day at 7pm for the light show). A tour guide on a walking tour I took said that you don't need to buy the joint ticket and recommended that you just buy the evening ticket for the light show. She was right - after the light show, they turn the lights on and you can see everything without all the crowds that are present during the day. The lightshow was also amazing. Really cool (no photography allowed during that though, so my pictures are just from the day time visit). The beauty of the interior of the basilica can't be overstated. It's considered a masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture. The ceiling is deep blue and decorated with golden stars - and the colors of that interior are just stunning. All around the basilica are intricate wood carvings, religious sculptures, stained glass, and more. I don't have much more to say - it's just stunning. And everyone is right; it's a must see in Montreal. read more

Fantastic!! We got two tickets to the "aura" light show. Really well done!! This light show is not super religious, per se (or at least not from what I know of it), it was more a celebration of light, sound, and beautiful architecture. I love that phones weren't allowed during the show- big plus for the light quality, as well as, I'd wager, everyone's mental presence. Fantastic show! read more
Very impressive architecture, woodwork, painting. This is an amazing Cathedral; I could spend hours sitting and walking here and enjoy every little detail and not get bored at all. The chapel in the back of the main cathedral is worth a visit, too. I recommend buying tickets in advance if you don't want to wait in the lineup. Right now there's Aura ongoing, weekdays at 6pm. I recommend buying ticket a few days in advance as they get sold-out. read more

You pay to get in and it's not that much. But worth it. The art work and the history is amazing. You could aka light a candle at spots in support of thing I think. They even went digital so you could use your card. High tech now. Way a go church and going with the times. read more
We started our day 1 from here. I can't think of a better way to start day 1 of your 2 days Montreal itinerary than a visit to the breathtaking Notre Dame Basilica of Montreal. The interior is truly mesmerizing with the colorful ceiling and gold accents. Go first thing in the morning as it can quickly become crowded. Adorned with intricate statues, colorful stained-glass windows and the famous 12-ton Jean-Baptiste bell, Notre-Dame Basilica of Montréal is one of the city's most visited sites. One of the most impressive sights in Old Montréal is the spectacular interior of the Notre-Dame Basilica. Located on Place d'Armes, this is Montréal's oldest Catholic parish church, founded in 1656. It stands in a far grander incarnation than the original. The twin towers of the neo-Gothic façade face Place d'Armes Canada's first Gothic Revival church was constructed in 1829, designated a basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1982, and declared a National Historic Site of Canada in 1989. Fact-1: it is not only a church, it is the site of many state funerals including, former Prime Minister Pierre-Elliott Trudeau, notable weddings like that of Celine Dion, and memorable musical performances, such as those by Luciano Pavarotti, the basilica is much more than a church. Ticket: The normal ticket is CAD 16; it also hosts an evening light and sound show that serves to highlight its spectacular architecture. The show is called 'The Aura Experience.' read more

This is a must see when in Montreal like we thought but even much more special and splendid to see in person here at the oldest church in Canada and one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. You buy tickets through Fever and can opt to light the candles for an additional donation. I am Jewish and my wife is Protestant but I considered lighting one myself though I have pyrophobia so didn't do so. read more

Incredibly beautiful! I am not a religious person at all, and I don't really like visiting churches, but this one is definitely worth visiting. The color schemes across the whole church are wonderfully done. You can kind of see it here in the pictures. The only complaint I have about it is that everything is a ridiculous charge for example, if you want to light a candle, it costs you $10. Just getting in alone is also $30 per person read more
I came here for the regular self guided tour and also did the Aura experience. The main altar is quite impressive as are the small nooks on the perimeter of the main worship space. For the Aura experience I do recommend arriving earlier than the ticket time to get a good spot since it is quite popular. I enjoyed the lasers, lights and techno music and at one point I wanted to get up and dance. It's a very unique experience in a church. read more
Sure one of the most beautiful churches iv seen in all my travels. The gold & deep blue color combination is simply stunning & mesmerising. To be honest I don't mind to pay 15 entrance fee, but i think its because people are paying they feel free to do anything. I'm not against taking picture & souvenirs selfies but just too many people posing & modelling that it takes the solemnity of the place. This is still a holy place after all. There was a light show going on when we visited but not interested in that. We visited daytime, But the equipments are still scattered all over the place. December is a busy time to visit. Suggest buying tickets online to avoid the line. Despite some negative observations, i still suggest vising Notre Dame at least once! read more
Amazing architecture and build centuries ago and still stands the test of time. You don't need to b from the Christian faith to appreciate this marvel. So serene, so quite so peaceful. You enter and you can feel the presence of divine power in this building. Spend some time here in peace and do some reflection of your own. What ever you believe in, you will feel better after as you reflect and all your thoughts will slowly running around. Appreciate the architecture, the stained glass, the pews, the roof and all detailed work that has been done so long ago with the help of modern tools. read more

We were fortunate that this stunningly beautiful, historic church was across the street from our hotel in Montreal. We arrived two hours before check-in, and after dropping off our bags, we hung out in here while we waited. I'm not of the faith, but felt a presence and really at peace, and the time just flew by. There is an admission charge, but it's worth visiting. They put on a light show in here in the evenings. It looks like everyone here takes the same photo, but how could you not? read more
I'm not religious in any way, but do enjoy visiting churches and cathedrals when I travel, for the history behind them and the usually ornate and gorgeous architecture they have. The Notre Dame Cathedral was one of the most visually stunning things we saw while In Montreal. There wasn't much to "do" there (there was a guided tour for a small cost, but we didn't have time to wait for the next one to start), but there is a lot to see! We saw the altar, the many different votive candle statuaries, the chapel in the back room (which many people apparently don't get to see), and all of the beautiful sculptures and stained glass windows. I definitely recommend at least a stop here, to take a few pictures and see a gorgeous church that you will remember the rest of your life. read more

As noted by others here, this Basilica is gorgeous and totally worth the time and money to visit. I really cannot add much other than my wife planned three visits today. The first was for entry to say a prayer and then wander through the church. The stained glass and architecture are fantastic. Our second visit was for Saturday Mass at 5:00pm. Mass was in French but if you know the Mass, you know the Mass. I followed along fine as I speak no French but it was still moving and sacred. Finally, we returned for Aura; the organ music and light show. Aura was great. I was nervous about how would lights and music go well and keep the sacred space sacred; they did not disappoint. My wife and I were quite moved by the show. While I imagine this took tons of effort to get right, I would have liked more! Next time we're in Montreal we'll be visiting again. read more

The last time I visited Montreal one summer over a decade ago, I stopped by Notre Dame during the daytime. I was only one of several visitors, and I could spend as much time as I wanted to admire the architecture and history of the church. However, my most recent visit hit differently. Maybe because I visited in the evening close to Christmas, the lights, decorations, and outdoor art installations made everything seem much more luminous and remarkable. I highly recommend getting tickets to L'expérience AURA | The AURA Experience. It is a light show with orchestral music. As of December 2022, tickets cost $32 CAN plus a $2 CAN service charge. The audience can walk around the church before and after the show starts to take photographs. After the light show, my group ate at a fantastic restaurant several blocks away in Old Montreal, which I also highly recommend doing before or after L'expérience AURA. The evening was a highlight of my Montreal trip. read more

This is a beautiful historical church. You can pre-pay online or pay at the door to get in. They also have candle that you can pay for inside. The architecture is exquisite. The feeling is intense. They have a prayer room to the side. Paying for parking to tour the church light a candle bulletin or tour inside ... the element of spiritual is lost and materialism is added just be aware. Tourist must see for the city but not my favorite. Hope your experience is better than mine. read more
