It has taken me a while to write this review-- I had to put my dog down in December 2019 so it was hard for me to write but it's long overdo Basking ridge animal hospital is absolutely phenomenal in every way especially Dr. Rotella. I started taking my dog there as soon as I rescued her and as a new dog owner they helped me tremendously. Fast forward 6 years and my dog had a mass that was biopsied and found to be cancerous. Dr. Rotella helped me navigate this incredibly difficult diagnosis and went through every potential option with me. In the end I chose the least invasive route and got another year of happiness with my dog. When the time came to put her down I called Dr. Rotella probably upwards of 10 times to discuss. She was incredibly kind, compassionate, understanding, patient etc. After I made the decision to put her down I called to discuss yet again and she reassured me that I did the best thing for my pet and that I made the right decision. She truly helped me get through losing my dog. I cannot say enough positive things about Dr. Rotella and the entire Basking Ridge animal hospital staff who always took the best possible care of my Sophia, from the very beginning to the very end. When the time comes that I get another dog I'll be heading straight to them! Take your pet to basking ridge animal hospital you will not be disappointed. It is worth every penny! read more

Besides every receptionist telling me different things that was needed they also over charge. 1 receptionist said I needed 1 thing, another told me I needed 2 things, the 3rd told me I needed 1 thing, the Dr told something else. Just very confused. they need to all get on the same page. Had to call numerous times to get the right answer. Never again will I go there or ever recommend any of their services. Look else where. I am sure the Dr will respond and defend them, but its all for nothing they are still a rip off. I even told someone I went there and they said why would I ever do that? read more

Called for an emergency appointment after my miniature labradoodle ingested a whole sock. She has never been seen at this facility before. The entire experience was pleasant from the receptionist who answered the phone to the veterinary technician and the veterinarian. We were brought back immediately, informed of the proposed treatment, and out the door in 30 minutes. The facility is clean and modern. The people are empathetic and accommodating. They just can't retain good vet staff because of pressure to sell, sell, sell. Unnecessary tests and procedures. Clients all know this. Many neighbors are former customers. Nice building, but terribly terribly overpriced. There were two good vets who cared for our dogs and both left. Vex and Daly. And DOZENS of vets turned over and quit in between. Dozens! I brought my Bichon into Basking Ridge Animal Hospital, He was extremely uncomfortable with blood in the urine. After an xray it was determined he needed surgery for bladder stones. Dr. Hollo performed the surgery that evening and removed a large amount of stones. My dog received wonderful care from the vets and the techs. Everyone was so kind and caring. I would definitely recommend this animal hospital to anyone for top care of their beloved pet. read more

My dogs have been going here for about 10 years and they have been great. I really like Dr. Halo but he hasn't been on the schedule much lately. He's never pushed any procedure or tests that my dogs don't need. However, as of late, I'm finding that the new doctors are just concerned about charging as much money as they can for a visit especially when it's the yearly check-up. My last senior visit at Basking Ridge was over $600 compared to my other dog who goes to a different vet, same type exam, costing me about $250. I'm switching vets because I feel I'm being overcharged. This has happened three times already and I have complained about it but nothing was done. I have asked for my dog's records and they are charging me to have them copied. It's ridiculous. No other vet has ever charged me for my dogs records before. I guess they need the money to pay for the huge expansion of their hospital. It's so sad that greed comes before the health of my family pet. read more

I had been going to Basking Ridge Animal Hospital for years. I left because I felt like they try to convince you to run so many expensive tests and ex rays and scans for the simplest of visits that one visit can cost hundreds of dollars. I came back to them a few years ago because they are so close and have great hours as well as emergency services. I unfortunately found out the hard way that some of the doctors there are awful diagnosticians. While I appreciate it is difficult to diagnose an animal that cannot speak for itself, I expect that when the doctor orders hundreds of dollars worth of blood work not once but twice, the second one being a four test ,that they are checking everything. I brought my best girl there when I felt she was not "right" . The doctor said she had Cushing disease. I gave her medicine for three months, told the doctor I noticed no change. By the time my poor girl took such a crushing turn for the worse, after apparently being misdiagnosed and treated for the wrong illness for three full months the doctor then checked her pancreas through a simple blood test. The levels were so high that the doctor had to have known my girl was dying ( I knew it just by the way she was acting) and yet instead of being kind and letting us do the right thing and stay with her as she went to sleep, she suggested we leave her there over the weekend to have a sonogram on Monday. My girl died alone in a cage that very night. We were beyond devastated, had the doctor checked her pancreas during the first two rounds of bloodwork three months earlier (Which as I later found out is very similar to Cushing disease. That should have been checked immediately )my best girl could have been cured. She knew she screwed up and said nothing. Didn't even have the decency to let us put her to a peaceful sleep in our arms. Had to cover her own ass and let my beloved pet die in a cage alone. It's disgraceful and Dr. Hollo tells me he's sorry for the loss of my "friend " as I'm taking my dog home in a box. I wish I would have spoken up at the time I was just beyond devastated. Needless to say we have left Basking Ridge Animal Hospital and I will never bring another pet there again. Being convenient is not a reason to trust the welfare and health of our beloved animals. It may look new and impressive, but it is only as good as its veterinarians which sadly are sub par, and I found out in the worst possible way. "Sorry I lost my friend". After growing up with both parents and my sister as veterinarians (and considering my parents' vet hospital in Pennsylvania as my home away from home), it's been very difficult to find a veterinary practice in New Jersey that lives up to my high expectations. I've been to several practices in the area - both solo practitioners and corporate-owned- and I haven't found one that comes even close to the personal care and professionalism at Basking Ridge Animal Hospital. The front staff is always friendly and attentive and we have never waited more than a few minutes in the waiting room. All of the vets and vet techs demonstrate a genuine interest in our pets, have been easy to communicate with, and are clearly passionate about their work. When my cats have needed surgery, Dr. Hollo was easily accessible and I spoke to him several times beforehand and afterwards to check on them. The staff is always up front about the costs so there are never any surprises, and I have found they are less likely than the corporate-owned vet hospitals to push unnecessary treatments. I highly recommend Basking Ridge Animal Hospital. The facility is beautifully renovated and immaculate. Dr. Hollo has been wonderfully attentive to my puppy who presented with with chronic lameness over a 2 month period. Despite no signs of injury on an X-ray, Dr. Hollo and his team were ALWAYS available to listen to my concern and continued to search for answers. Dr. Hollo was ultimately correct with his FCP elbow diagnosis and now my dog is pain free and recovering from surgery. Dr. Hollo and his staff often called me after hours to check on my dog, and have treated him as an important member of my family. I have an 18 year old Bichon Poo whose care I have entrusted to Doctor Hollo and the Basking Ridge Animal Hospital on a number of occasions. I have found the staff, from the ladies who answer the phone to the technicians and doctors, to always be knowledgeable, helpful and kind. My dog recently suffered a digestive infection which caused him to vomit and not eat. We have been using Basking Ridge Animal Hospital for several years. They have treated 3 of our dogs over the years. They have always been understanding and compassionate. When we had an emergency with one of our dogs, they opened the hospital at 6 am to meet us. They were amazing! They have cared for our dogs with such love. We have used Dr. Rotella who is outstanding. She listens and is very thorough. We have had no issues with appts. and have not had to go to an emergency hospital because we are always able to reach someone at Basking Ridge even on the weekends and after hours. I went to this place because, after adopting a cat, was given a certificate for spaying cost reduction that is paid for and approved by the State of NJ. Was told a pre-appointment was necessary which is understandable. This cost $80 and the exam took just over 3 minutes. On the day of drop off, I was asked if other options were wanted if needed. My understanding was that if something went wrong, these options would be applied. I agreed. In the log run, my $20.00 low fee spaying just cost me $477.26, in addition to the $80 for the 3 minute exam. A spaying at another hospital that did not accept the state program for adopted animals was only $200. Will never recommend this place to anyone. If you plan on going there, please beware of non necessary charges. I have two words for them, RUN AWAY. read more

Just moved into the area and have four dogs. We wanted a new vet in the area so I decided to try this vet practice since they were close by and their ratings were ok. Front desk staff didn't even look up when I came in. It seemed like my presence was an annoyance to them and they continued their private conversation. My dog needed surgery and they really rushed it but I thought they knew best. BIG mistake!!! They were so willing to take my money but never followed up on my dog. I had to call them. Then they had the nerve to tell me that I owed them $20 for a halo so that my dog did not touch her injured leg. This, after a $4000 bill!! It was insulting, especially when they didn't follow up on my dog! They even confused her with my other dog! No personal touch. All about getting your money!! I went back to my old vet, even if I have to travel 25 miles to get there. Never again! read more

I actually went in person to pay my $550 bill for putting my dog down because I wanted to refute the $55 (not $45 as I said originally) examination fee Dr. Hollo charged, when in fact, he did not examine the dog. He became very angry with me, at first insisting he examined the dog. Then, he came up with the explanation that he charged the fee because the time he spent explaining the proces to me and my two adult kids, he could have "seen two other patients." Can you imagine!? Well, we ended up having quite the argument and he simply refused to remove the bogus $55 charge. In order to get my dog's remains, I just paid it. He is a money hungry, ruthless individual. By the way, I'm very happy at Somerset Veterinary in Pluckemin. They are always delighted to see my dog - he loves going to the vet! It's clean (Basking Ridge is dingy and dark.) and everyone is friendly. read more

I've been going to Basking Ridge Animal Hospital for over 20 years and Dr. Hollo has been my veterinarian. Five stars isn't enough to relay the trust and quality care Dr. Hollo has provided my dogs. I've had 4 dogs over this time frame and frankly Dr. Hollo saved my first dog's life. I'd been to many vets that couldn't diagnose my dogs ailment and he was very close to death. Dr Hollo diagnosed and kept my dog in the hospital and nursed him back to health. His empathy, compassion and expertise was clear to me from that point forward. The care, compassion and quality of service consistently exceeds my expectations and while you don't know me - my expectations are very high when it comes to my dogs. Doing a great job once might be luck but consistently providing excellent care over a 20 year four dog span .. isn't luck it is commitment to excellence. Everyone at the office is there to help and the total customer experiance is great. Five stars is a number that many feel is important these days but the level of trust I have in Dr. Hollo and all those at Basking Ridge is well beyond any number of stars. I like this place a lot. I have had to take my teacup Yorkie here a number of times while visiting my parents who live in the area. The vets are SO sweet and really care so much about Bella and her nervous mom (me!) whenever I am there. Our newly adopted puppy from St Huberts broke her toe on a Thursday afternoon in July 2009. We didn't know it was broken at first. Sometimes she would walk on three legs and not put any pressure at all on her back right leg, but other times she would walk normally. After a calm night my wife decided to take her to Basking Ridge Animal Hospital to get it checked out. They admitted the dog, sedated her, morphine patched her and did various other things that created lots of discomfort. We picked her up at 4:30 Friday afternoon and had a miserable night with crying, whining and defecating everywhere. We called first thing Saturday morning and they said to come by and pick up a medication that they probably should have given us when we picked up the dog the previous day. Mind you we spent $934 on Friday afternoon and on Saturday morning they charged us $5.34 for the meds they admitted they forgot to give us. Bad business - yes, criminal no. What is criminal is the subsequent visits with varying costs of $55 to $220 for what I don't know. We never went back. We are very happy with Bridgewater Animal Hospital. read more

Dr. Vex has been tending to my cats and rabbits for several years. I am certain all the doctors are well qualified however; I rearrange my schedule to accommodate Dr. Vex's schedule. Her care has been excellent. When my rabbit died, she was very comforting and went above and beyond with support for my family. I like Dr. Vex so much, I named one of my rabbits after her! MY HEROS...Dr Pope, Erica and Rachel at BRAH risked their lives in a blizzard (record3ft snow) to meet me at the office in an attempt to save my poor suffering baby "Tank" who's trachea tragically collapsed leaving him gasping for air and suffering as no living creature ever should. Unfortunately he couldn't be saved but they were thankfully able to quickly make him comfortable and relieve him from his suffering. I was so grateful for their medical expertise, their kindness, their support and dedication. "Whitefish", their house kitty, instinctively came over to comfort my struggling Tank and after his passing instinctively came over to comfort me. The entire staff offered their sincere condolences and support and ensured he was given a dignified and memorable passing over "Rainbow Bridge". We have been taking our rescue pup to Dr. Hollo at the Basking Ridge animal hospital since the beginning of the year and we couldn't be happier. He was able to resolve many of the outstanding medical issues that we were unable to get resolved with other local vets. He is always looking for long time solutions and not a short-term fix four our pup. The staff is wonderful and very friendly, appointments are easily booked and prices are fair for the quality of care that they give. Our pup was terrified going to other local vets but seems to love going to see Dr. Hollo and the staff. I think it's important to mention that they don't force un-needed procedures or medications and take the time to educate us on what the best course of treatment should be. read more

We have taken our adopted cars and dogs here for 10+ years because they are honest, through, and open later and longer. Prices aee pretty much the same as others in area. Recently our dog was hit by a car, and Dr. Hollo stopped on his way to the Hospital to help put her into my car. Dr. Redin called us multiple times with progress updates and were so compassionate as her condition did not improve. The entire team was so compassionate, explained her situation, and we're realistic about her future. They were supportive of our choice to say goodbye to our sweet girl and never judged. I had been going to Basking Ridge Animal Hospital for 3 years with my first dog and have no complaints about their expertise. Their prices are much higher than normal but I was sort of okay with that, too, as we weren't there that often and it was convenient for me. I did not have my dog neutered there, however. They charge over $600!!! I got it done at another vet for only $125! The real reason I am writing this is because our 3 month old puppy swallowed a soft facial cloth and started having the runs for a couple of days so I took him in. I told the doctor exactly what he swallowed and that I thought that was the reason. They immediately suggested xrays which cost $150 but I agreed to it. They did see "something" in his stomach and told me our only option was an ultrasound or a barium study to see what it was. (I already knew what it was). And they wanted to keep him overnight. We felt we had to go with their advice. This was going to cost us $1050 more!! They did the Barium study on Gus overnight and concluded he needed surgery that morning. The day before they quoted me $1200-$1500 for the surgery but now they told me $1800-$2700!! Additional!! Something in my gut told me not to trust them. I called a good friend who rescues dogs who called her vet. The first thing they asked is "why didn't they give your dog peroxide?" When you give a dog this it makes them throw everything up and works every time for soft items. I called Basking Ridge back and asked them to do it and they said, "Gus has been throwing up all morning. Anything in his stomach would be out by now. We don't recommend it at all." The second vet said the quote for surgery was WAY TOO HIGH and we were getting taken. I picked Gus up from Basking Ridge animal hospital and took him to Howell Animal Hospital instead. They gave him peroxide and he threw up the cloth immediately, did not need surgery and it cost me $100!! Basking Ridge Animal Hospital went right for our wallets with no regard for the care of our 3 month old puppy. They would have cut him open and charged us an arm and a leg to do so. I will NEVER EVER go back to them again. read more

BEWARE!!! I am so sorry I ever brought our dog here. They over vaccinated her by giving her 3 vaccines and 2 boosters at her annual physical. Even though I questioned the need for so many vaccines, I was assured this was fine because 3 of the vaccines are included in 1 shot. Also, their website states that they recommend titer testing for adult dogs so as not to over stress their immune system, but I was never given the option to titer test. Three weeks later our dog was diagnosed with IMHA, Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia. Her immune system was over stressed by the vaccines and it reacted by destroying her red blood cells. They are supposed to be a hospital but they do not have basic diagnostic equipment. Ten days later we had to put our sweet dog to sleep, after trying to save her with meds and a blood transfusion. They have a brand new building and an electric car charger in the parking lot, but they don't have blood analysis equipment so they send it out and it takes a day to get the results. There is a mobile ultrasound wagon that can be scheduled as they can't provide this test either. The only thing they have is an X-ray machine. They have the audacity to call themselves a hospital! Take your pets somewhere else, these people only care about over charging you to pay for their new building. read more

Yes, Basking Ridge Animal Hospital is as good as it gets. I and my loved ones have been patients for over 20 years and I would not dream of going elsewhere. Not only does this hospital offer the ultimate in care for a variety of species, the compassion and empathy on the part of all the vets and staff is something I've never encountered before (and I'm not a youngster, so I've experienced plenty). Nothing against any other vet or hospital, but Dr. Hollo and every member of his staff are the best of the best. I've had some very sad cases that had happy endings, thanks to these wonderful people. When the ending is not going to be good, the compassion and obvious concern for the pet parent shown by these consummate professionals really does ease the pain. I could go on and on about how great this hospital is, but I do have to add one last plug for the person who sets the standards here. I have learned so much from Dr. Hollo, as can anyone willing to listen. To say he is knowledgeable is an understatement; even better, while he is an encyclopedia of animal ailments, he never stops trying to learn more. I live in an area where Mercedes outnumber Scions by a significant margin -- I drive a Scion. I find it very strange that anyone would carp about costs, which I have never found anything but reasonable. I get exceptional value for my money and value is what I'm looking for.
