My daughter has been harassed multiple times by the dean and they have consistently made her feel shameful of her body, even though she is a star athlete that represents the school and has helped them win multiple times. I was originally told by one of their big alumni that they do not like children of color. As a mom with a black daughter, I did not believe it originally however, after my daughter now being at the school for two years, I realize she has been treated differently and she has been harassed because of the way she looks from teachers and the deans. They do not work with you, the school counselors don't get the schedules right, they don't return phone calls, they don't ensure your child is getting the right classes. It's almost like they don't even do work at this school, several are the teachers are extremely underqualified and they're just somebody's friend and they do not care what happens to your child. If your child forgets a lunch, they do not even allow you to leave the child's lunch. You are forced to buy a lunch from them. It just seems like all they care about is payments. The Catholic Church needs to stop funding them. This school is nothing but about taking your money and not doing right by your kids. They are not treating black kids right and they barely treat everybody else decent. I am so sorry that I even had my daughter come here. Now we are stuck here or she goes to multiple high schools, which is something I never wanted to do. Hopefully I can save another parent from this heartbreaking experience that I have been going through with this school. I am incredibly disappointed in the administration, the school and the Catholic practices that they instill. Grade inflation is prominent everywhere, which is a good thing if you're into having high grades, but you aren't necessarily prepared for college with the course material. Teacher quality is typically on the lower side, though a few teachers do focus on teaching rigorously. Despite being an MIT EA admit, I question whether that's the school to commit to, given how little I've been prepared over my last 4 years. School events are hastily created and expensive, and there are very few organizations, even fewer with proper organization (which is just what happens when you put students in charge of something). The main issue is a lack of school pride, which leads to few organizations, as students typically do not participate in any. The general staff are kind, though. The office administration is helpful, and most teachers (evidently noted by grade inflation) genuinely want you to succeed. Most staff are approachable. Some teachers (most notably music) are pretty hostile, however, often trying to get the better of students or stir up issues. Fights are relatively common, and tension is heavy among students. Security does their job well, although some officers are questionable about their closeness to female students. closeness Our sports teams are fine. If you're interested in football, the football team here is decent for their division. If you're interested in performing arts, don't expect much--there's very low participation in musical arts, both choir and wind ensemble (which are very likely to fizzle out by the '28-'29 year completely). Dance and art are the only two relevant arts. However, they're still relatively underrepresented (~2 levels of classes for visual art [no pathway] and ~3 separate dance courses [2 levels and Dance Co.]). If you're interested in acting, tough luck. There are no drama courses. No relevant STEM pathways, aside from biology, especially for those interested in engineering or chemistry. School lunch has improved drastically in the last few years, though (it's free!). The campus is in pretty poor shape, with few renovations to buildings. The art/music building is deteriorating. Common issues (such as those related to the bathrooms) are still prevalent here, although they're present in most schools. Would give 1 star, but the staff are fairly friendly, and it's easy to be valedictorian if you put in even an ounce of effort (which is nice to flex, though it shows how little students here prioritize education, which further harms educational pathways). Do not recommend--Los Altos, Nogales, Rowland, and Glen A. Wilson are down the corner, and your child will be a lot happier there.

Most of the friends you make here are generally more 'loose' and very easy-going - no matter what grades they get. The low-achieving status of this school is the give; however, the everlasting strong friendships through mutually, open, or discrete hardships that are so often shared is the take. When it comes to the surrounding environment...haha. Of course it's not safe. People get shot, murdered, and raped in streets within nearby neighborhoods and it's never a surprise when the school goes on lockdown. Surprisingly enough, there have never been any kidnappings. Drivers can be shit too; it's a good thing the area is littered with cops and that the staff has good security. The only reason for someone to get killed is either by your own stupid mistake on the streets, or by being even stupider by voluntarily getting involved with gangs and by spending time with the wrong people. If you stray away from that, you're better than just fine because you can have under-the-influence peers who can be seriously nice and will inform you of where and when undesireable events could/will happen. That's why it's all up to your own decisions - just like any other school with spheres of influence. As for the teachers, the regulars (except for the regulars chemistry teacher) are mediocre and you'd rather not want to touch that. The honors/AP/IB teachers are exceptional, ironically enough. Our current honors chemistry teacher is potentially a fountain of intelligence, but holy fuck she spends an enormous amount of time in class just dicking around on facebook to occassionally share pictures, videos, and stories of her toddlers to the class, of which she can easily distract and temporarily convince. Nogales's honors department is extremely lucky to have their current members. The freshmen start out with the mother, Mr. Speirs (world history honors), and the father, Ms. Zelnick (english honors) of honors. The genders are switched due to their associated familial reputations with the honors kids (mother for girl/boy problems and father for life and serious problems). Our school's R.O.P. program offers a buttload of fun - especially the arts division. The time spent with these guys will inject you with the true definition of high school memories - no matter what kind of challenged memory you have. Most importantly, the fact that Nogales also has a bad reputation with academics, good scores on tests (especially AP) are sexy when it comes to colleges taking a gander at transcripts. Considering the amount of difficulty there is in the typical honors/IB pathway, it's still a bitch to score high. Doing so at Nogales, however, makes you stand out on an amazing scale when compared to getting high grades at an 'already high' achieving school, like Rowland, Diamond Bar, or Ayala. I'm always going to cherish how it all feels right the friends I made here. On one half of the entire spectrum of social diversity, there coexists many potheads and douchebag cholos ruining their futures. On the other side, the amount of differences between the innumerable amount of cliques is amazing. You can convince yourself that you've had every type of friend if/when you decide to stop looking at people the same way. I'm a junior now and everything is just fine for me here. Nogales deserves a lot more respect and praise than it actually gets based on external opinions that I often find to be some seriously biased bullshit or very uneducated guesses influenced by ear. My experience at this school has been honestly frustrating and disappointing. The aesthetics doesn't compare to Sierra Vista High School's more recently renovated track, but it gets the job done if you're looking for a place to walk/jog. You can also run the sidewalk circumference of the school which happens to be the conveniently measured distance of 1 mile which can be used whether school is in session or not. This school has an amazing staff! The teachers, school counselors, the principal, even the school aids are all extremely friendly and helpful! This school focuses on OUR children! Which is extremely hard to find! Today my son graduated as a HAWK and it was an honor to be able to be a part of such a wonderful experience. Absolutely love this school! Can't wait for my girls to attend this middle school next year.
