When I asked about spousal support she replied that it was unlikely and if awarded it wouldn't be for very long and would likly be insignificant. But there is a statute I found on my ex husband atterney's website indicating that spousal support is mandatory if you have been married for longer than 10 , baring a criminal record, with a child with a disabiltity. It goes from 10yrs of marriage to 15 and then 20 to cap out at 7yrs of 20% of spouses income toward spousal support. I had to do her job for her. I found her manner both rude and incompetent.

Their failures were so extraordinary, that it seemed as if they were deliberately sabotaging my case. They ASKED to join my case against their old boss, claiming that they watched every day for cases which would let them "get back at" him. Yet, they removed claims from my lawsuit without asking first, failed to request a directed judgment when the Defendant admitted to stealing from me under oath, quit 4 days before a trial and billed for work never delivered. This review is to document failures by the law firm Ringel & Brymer which fatally harmed my case. Background and firm-level conflict: Ringel & Brymer sent me an unsolicited registered mail letter asking to be added as counsel and specifically offering the firm's services free of charge in my case against Derek Van Gilder whom both Ringel and Brymer had previously worked for/partnered with and whom I was suing for theft of retainer and failure to appear. I asked how James Ringel had become aware of my lawsuit against his former employer/partner and he replied that he'd been watching all filings in Bastrop courts for anything involving his former employer, looking for any opportunity to assist in any action against Derek Van Gilder. Obviously in retrospect this was a MASSIVE conflict of interest. Under the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct, this type of conflict is non-waivable, particularly given Ringel's claim that his former employment with Van Gilder would give him "the inside edge" in assisting me with my case. This unwaivable conflict is obvious to any first-year law student, or at minimum requires strict written informed consent and careful compliance. (TDRPC 1.06(a), 1.06(b), 1.09(a), 1.06(c)) Having already suffered theft at the hands of Van Gilder, not to mention having to take over the case I'd hired him for, I was financially strained and accepted James Ringel's offer of free help. At intake, I recall signing a written conflict waiver. My wife was present and independently recalls reviewing the document and seeing me sign it. But after the representation collapsed, Ringel stated in writing alternately that he could not recall whether any written conflict waiver exists, that he could accelerate the efforts of his staff to "find it" depending upon why I wanted it, and in the same email suggested, startlingly, that a conflict waiver might not have been required in this situation. For a partner-level attorney at a law firm to be unable to confirm whether written informed consent was obtained in a plainly conflicted engagement reflects either a serious firm-level compliance failure, or a fundamental lack of truthfulness. (TDRPC 1.01(b), 1.03(b), 1.06(c)) Failure to act on sworn testimony admitting use of a disbarred lawyer! During the proceedings, Derek Van Gilder testified under oath that a disbarred attorney, R. Allen Rogers, worked on my file. Understand, this was sworn testimony by the Defendant himself! That admission triggered IMMEDIATE obligations for Ringel and Brymer: to notify the court, to seek appropriate relief, and to address the legal and ethical consequences of a disbarred lawyer's participation. James Ringel and Jimmy Brymer did NOTHING. Worse, BOTH both had prior employment with Van Gilder and were in a position to know of Rogers's prohibited work on client files James filed no motion/objection, contacted no authorities. No relief or corrective action was taken. (TDRPC 1.01(a), 1.01(b), 1.03(a)) This failure to act exposes James Ringel and Jimmy Brymer to possible sanctions up to and including disbarment themselves, and brutally calls their integrity into question. (TDRPC 1.01(a), 1.01(b), 1.03(a)) Van Gilder's exhibits at trial showed billing me $400 per hour instead of $390 per hour, plus multiple $400+ charges for the same intake phone call. These exhibits were sufficient ON THEIR OWN to prove my claims of theft by Defendant. Despite this, no attorney from Ringel & Brymer moved for a directed verdict or judgment notwithstanding the verdict. James stopped communicating once the case went to appeal. Weeks/months went by without issuing witness subpoenas or engaging in trial prep. Nobody from the firm stepped in, FOUR DAYS before the trial I had to fire him to act on my own behalf, or lose by default. Each of the above failures are individually serious. However taken together they were devastating. The combined impact of such gross negligence was indistinguishable from DELIBERATE SABOTAGE of my legal interests, This failure raises serious questions under the Texas Disciplinary Rules and was referred to the appropriate authorities for review. I CANNOT recommend Ringel & Brymer for matters involving conflicts of interest, trial practice, ethical compliance, or deadline-critical litigation work.

We contacted her very late in the game-- we only had a week I believe before we were due to appear in court. She charged us an up-front fee that was reasonable, and the billing was by hour. After everything was said and done, we didn't end up owing her anything extra. She knew just how much time she would have to spend on the case, and her breakdown of the billing was sincere. I never felt like she was slowing the process down to charge us more, as I've heard some lawyers do. She offers credit repair, and we're thinking of taking her up on that soon, as we would like to buy a house in the next year or 2. Due to additional extraordinary (not in a good way) circumstances which compounded to create what can only be described as "the perfect legal storm," my progress remained at a stand still for the last 4 years. Beginning a little over a year ago, I broke down and began consulting with attorney after attorney to no avail. Each consultation revealed that inordinate retainers would be required in advance, and some even made me feel their sense of defeat before we even began. At the end of 2013, a wrench was thrown into the gears that required me to find help and obtain a resolution as soon as possible. I had no time left to be unproductive. In January, I stumbled upon The Worden Law Firm while perusing Yelp reviews of several local Travis County law firms. I read all of the reviews on their page (regardless of what the Yelp automated recommendation software believes.) After doing so, I knew that I needed to reach out to this firm, and I did so the very next day. I have absolutely no regrets. Jessica replied electronically to my inquiry within 1 business day. She showed no fear of my situation, and in fact was rather excited to take it on. Her retainer was a fraction of what others had demanded, and her fees very reasonable. She was incredibly easy to work with, positive, very personable, non-judgmental, ethical, and worked swiftly and diligently to file documents and make any needed changes. She was able to navigate the law and initiated the service of divorce papers to my husband internationally (in my case, a process that could have taken up to 8 months.) I tell you with tears of joy in my eyes, by the end of June I was a single woman! We discussed later on ,that She would prep me for the custody hearing so that I would not have to pay anything else and she billed me an extra $3000 for doing absolutely nothing right after she told me my remaining bill was $500. Even a simple question that I would email to her would be responded with " well that's a loaded question. " my case has been complicated, but all I needed to do in Travis County was to get in front of a judge, and even now she refuses to file simple documents,which includes registering my case and enforcing the court orders from California. Travis County has been a complete shit show. And what promised to be something simple ,ultimately became impossible for this woman to do .One year later she has my $5000 and I am no further along than what I was at the time that I retained her. she gave me false hope and manipulated me with promises She did not keep. I was on Zoom and I recorded everything on audio just for something to refer back to. Jessica claims she won the hearing while she was sitting at home on her laptop and hardly even spoke in the hearing, I know a lot of family law attorneys are narcissists, but this is ridiculous. had she said in the beginning that she could not get me in front of a judge for a $5000 retainer then I would not have hired her in the first place. I'm furthermore there is absolutely no evidence that she has even put a case together for me because now she is ignoring the fact that I need to be in front of a judge . Where are all these emails that I sent with the Los Angeles Court documents??? and why are they not prepared into a file that can be put into my new case in Travis County??? This is something that a Paralegal could quite easily do , but I paid Jessica to do it. It should be no big deal for an attorney to file a hearing in court. This is what I am pissed off about. She has now signed off on the case conveniently before She was trying to sign off, which has taken three months to do waiting for the judges signature .I will probably be filing a complaint to the Texas State bar if she does not complete what she said she was going to do. she is a very below average attorney that thinks that she is a lot better than she actually is my friend who is a paralegal in a high profile. We had a consultation, I sent every piece of paperwork they asked for, and we did a follow up call to close out questions. Michael repeatedly said my case was simple, fewer than five creditors, nothing complicated. Then it all stopped... Two months went by and the only work product I ever saw was a single paragraph drafting a settlement with my biggest creditor. It had typos and unfilled placeholders in it. I wrote back inside an hour. That was the last I heard from either Michael or Renee. They quit answering me, and they quit answering the creditors who were trying to reach them. Eventually I had no choice but to move to a different attorney and request a refund of the $6,000 I had already paid. We will see if it shows up. I would not hold my breath. My take is that Michael seems to be heading toward retirement and is not focused on new clients. Read through the other reviews and you will see the same story over and over, followed by apologies and requests to change the rating. Save your money and your time.
