DO NOT USE THIS CONTRACTOR. Severe National Electrical Code (NEC) violations that created an active fire hazard in my kitchen, followed by predatory billing and unauthorized credit card charges.I called Bates Electric for an emergency burning odor behind a kitchen outlet on July 24th. A supervisor arrived, confirmed an active burning wire on an aluminum circuit, and charged a premium $375 emergency fee. However, he lacked a basic GFCI outlet on his truck, bypassed the wire, and left my kitchen outlet open and entirely unusable.On July 31st, a second technician arrived to complete the job. The company charged an additional $125 trip fee for this visit, despite it being a continuation of the work they left uncompleted on the first day. Furthermore, despite explicit knowledge of the aluminum hazard, this technician installed a standard GFCI using regular, copper-only orange wire nuts--a direct violation of NEC Section 110.14(B). This negligent installation created an immediate fire hazard. The moment a low-voltage nightlight was plugged in, the outlet began heavily arcing and visibly sparking out of the wall opening.After urgently reporting the sparking, a third technician came on August 6th, confirmed the incorrect, non-compatible connectors were used, and finally fixed it with proper Al/Cu purple caps. Although management explicitly promised I would not be charged for this corrective safety visit, they ran my credit card for an additional $125 anyway.To date, they have charged me $656.50 to swap a single outlet due entirely to their own technicians' mistakes. Management is currently withholding my final transactional invoices and completely ignoring my calls and written demands. I have officially filed formal complaints with the Missouri Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division, St. Charles County Building and Code Enforcement, and initiated credit card disputes. I cannot say enough about the excellent service Bates Electric provided my family in an emergency. When a fallen tree limb ripped the service line away from my house on a late Thursday evening, it left my wife (who was only weeks away from her due date at the time) and I in the dark. With a little one on the way, multiple animals needing protection from the heat (over 90 during the day), and the weekend rapidly approaching we were scrambling to find a solution. Bates dispatched a professional immediately. The electrician that arrived (Jeremy) was the definition of a professional. He was knowledgeable, fast, courteous, and provided accurate advice on how to resolve our issues. Jeremy genuinely cared about the situation my wife and I had fallen into and stayed engaged in the process from start to finish and then some. IF you've ever had to go through an emergency outage you will know that there are a lot of moving parts involved between the energy company, the electrician and the city/county inspectors. This is where Bates really shined. When the repair work was done, the back office took over to push us over the goal line. While the repairs where done, the energy company was refusing to restore service without an inspection by the city/county. Getting both a permit and an inspection completed on a Friday during a pandemic is one of the toughest deadlines possible. To make things even tougher, the permit office was going through a IT outage that significantly stalled the process. Bates back office (especially Alexis) stepped up to take on the challenge. Through close coordination and effective communication they were able to get the entire process fast tracked and completed before the weekend. Bates earned a customer in me and will be my first call for any future needs (especially emergencies). read more

We have used Bates electric three times for electrical needs. They came out quickly, gave us a written bid the next day. Their staff & electricians are professional, knowledgeable, courteous & friendly. They make working with them so easy & enjoyable. Everything is addressed & spelled out, no surprises or hidden costs. We had new wiring ran for several areas outside the first time & an outlet repaire & they were fast & efficient. The 3rd time they actually came in slightly under their original bid which was something that does not happen very often. They changed out electrical sockets & added a few in our basement after sewer back up. The 2nd time we had a new outlet installed in the front of our house. Once again they were fast & did work in a timely, clean manner. Bates can do any type of electrical work that you need whether 4 home or business. We would not hesitate to recommend them. We contracted with Bates Electric to upgrade our electric box with a 30 amp fuse to support a new electric water heater. Our technician Matt arrived right on time, providing a courtesy call in advance to tell us he was on his way. Matt was well mannered and presented a very professional and clean appearance. He took the time to explain exactly how he was going to update the box and run the connection to where the water heater would be installed. It took him less than two hours. Once done, he thoroughly cleaned up around the work area and, more impressively, he left detailed information on how he ran the wiring so that I could provide it to technicians who would later install the water heater. All in all, a very professional experience at a very affordable price. When we are ready to upgrade our entire electrical box, I plan on contracting with Bates Electric again. read more

I've been struggling to get some minor electrical work done at my house. Because I am out of town frequently it is imperative that I be able to schedule on fairly short notice. I have had a number of electricians either fail to show when promised and/or fail to respond to my voicemail messages. Yesterday I called Bates Electric and was able to get an appointment for the following day. This afternoon I had the pleasure of meeting Danny Layfield who showed up as scheduled and completed the work in a timely manner. This was a welcome relief. Danny was pleasant and professional and since I also work in the service industry I really appreciated it. I was so impressed that I will request Danny for my next appointment with Bates as I anticipate having some additional work done. read more

I have had Bates to my home 3 times in the last 6 months to install ceiling lights; one fixture needed to be replaced, the other required relocation of a light fixture.. they are fast and friendly. I had to call them to return to my house to move one of my light fixtures because it was centered in the room but not centered between the front windows, and I couldn't live with that asymmetry.. I suppose I wasn't clear in asking for that light fixture to be centered.. in both visits, the electrician didn't have enough drywall screws or shims to attach the drywall piece into the hole in the ceiling. In one visit, the electrician didn't have a tarp to cover the floor. Fortunately, I had extra tarps, screws and shims on hand. read more

I love this company! From the time you call and you feel really cared for. And the electricians did they send are so nice and extremely competent. A difficult combination to find nowadays. I needed an electrical Outlet grounded, and I have an old house so I knew it was gonna be a bit challenging. But the electrician could not have been more patient and thoughtful about doing it the best way possible. I could not have been more pleased! We have used Bates three times, twice to hang ceiling fans with lights/remotes and once to hang two new chandeliers in the dining room and kitchen. The ceilings are over 12 feet tall. The chandeliers are on dimmer switches. We had two different installers, both very friendly and on time. One climbed in the attic to reinforce the kitchen fan/light to make sure it would not fall. They tested everything before they left and said to call if we have any issues. That was over a year ago and everything is great! I would recommend Bates Electric to anyone! read more

I have been using Bates to preform the annual preventive maintenance on my generator. Service appointments are on time. The service tech always answers my questions and explains what he is doing. No pressure to buy additional services when not needed; when they are needed, an explanation is given so I can make an informed decision. Burned out a breaker which in turn damaged the bar. Lost our furnace. Emergency call, they charged for that but did not have the part in stack. They bypassed and used a breaker that we did not need to get us heat in the mean time. A few days later, installed new parts, no service call since they had to charge us earlier. All like brand new.
