The place was alright the people that work there were ok. There is this one lady that works there she's usually in the office right when you walk in I didn't get her name but I didn't like her she was rude and when I asked her anything she acted as if she didn't have time to answer my question and kept saying I had to call this other company that they work with it's like why do you even work there if you are so useless and can't even answer your customers questions or concerns . I also didn't like how they did my sister's makeup they did a very bad. Job where my sister did not even look like herself so they need to fire whoever does the makeup and that place is so small and their bathrooms were dirty and it stinks they need to make the office smell better and more inviting . read more

We lost my mom very suddenly. I came from out of town while she was in the hospital and after she passed we wanted to get the funeral done soon after. We didn't want her waiting at the hospital and my family and I needed closure before returning home. My cousin and I searched online at multiple funeral homes but none of them seemed right. Their pricing was confusing and they weren't able to accommodate our desired date. We met and worked with Todd Wester throughout the whole process and he was very compassionate, kind, professional and so easy to work with. During a tragic time like this, he helped make the process bearable and seamless. Every staff member we came in contact with including the mortician Jeanette was amazing and very sweet. The funeral home had a Buddhist room that was beautiful and perfect for my mom. It's exactly how she would have wanted it. Part of our very affordable package included the banquet room which fit our family and friends perfectly for lunch afterwards and it had a huge fridge for us to store our drinks in. They also had a beautiful comfortable lobby to gather around in. No one wants to be in this position of having to plan a funeral for their loved ones but if you have to this is the most honest, professional, compassionate funeral home you will ever find. read more

I'm not happy with their customer service, when a family is in need they need access to information. It is a traumatic emotional time. We were having a family member and a close friend cremated and for some reason could never get anyone on the phone to talk to or comfort us. Unexpectedly losing a loved one is one of life's most challenging and heart wrenching scenarios. Earlier this year I lost my husband during a liver transplant operation. He was a long-time pastor and often worked with Bay Area Mortuary. There was only one choice for me on which mortuary to use and that was Bay Area Mortuary. Jeannette and Samantha were the two people I worked with. Due to the circumstances of my husband's death and the condition of his body, Jeannette had to bring all her skills, expertise, and love to the table to work wonders for my husband that allowed us to have an open casket ceremony. Jeannette is not only an expert embalmer, but also a compassionate and detailed funeral director. Over the course of three consecutive days, Jeannette and Samantha provided excellent service (with compassion and care) for our private family viewing (on a Sunday night), Celebration of Life (on Monday), and graveside burial service (on Tuesday). Jeannette and Samantha ensured we had everything we needed to make this most challenging time as pleasant as possible. Back in 2020, we lost my stepdaughter to cancer and Jeannette provided all the needed services for us at that time as well. It was during the height of the pandemic and funeral services were an extreme challenge. Jeanette did a wonderful job preparing my stepdaughter's body. Everything, make-up, hair, clothing, made our daughter look beautiful and peacefully sleep. All the funeral details were executed with compassion and without any issues, given the state of the pandemic. Because of the excellent service we have received over the years, and their pricing which I feel is fair, I recommend Bay Area Mortuary to friends and family with the need arises. read more

Unfortunately we recently lost a family member and had the hard task of planning the funeral services. We went to a couple other places in San Jose before we remembered a different family member had services at Bay Area Mortuary in the past. We called for information and they agreed to a meeting with us the next day. We met with Lisa. She was very helpful with information and their prices were a lot lower compared to others. We ended up also ordering a casket through them as well. The place was the perfect size and very clean inside. Lisa was so great and helpful the whole way through, all the way to the gravesite service, which we had on a different day than the viewing. This business is located in a poor part of San Jose where the homeless are sleeping right outside the gated building. I did not feel safe leaving my car (wish I had my german shepherd with me). The " board" decided to give my mothers remains to the wrong family member. This place did not follow California laws. Todd chose not to get involved. The cremation took an extremely long time. I DO NOT recommend that anyone take their loved one to this place of business. read more

I have used Bay Area mortuary twice now after losing my elderly dogs. This last time they accepted my pet for their cremation services on such short notice. Each time I have used them, the staff was so kind and compassionate, they have a beautiful room designed just for deceased pets. The manager even came to greet us. Their prices are very good, and the urn I received my dog in was beautiful and included a plaque. I highly recommend this business. read more

I lost my cousin unexpectedly (31, heart attack) a couple of months ago. I accompanied my aunt, uncle and cousin (the deceased's sister) to a meeting with Todd. He seemed to be extremely kind and empathetic. Two days later, my cousin went back to the mortuary to finalize some details. Todd was not there, and instead spoke to someone else. She was in the room with my cousin and her family, and called Todd. Todd was on speakerphone (unknowingly) and the woman my cousin was talking to asked out loud wondering how my cousin passed away because he was so young. Todd then decided to take this time to speak his mind. He said "Because he's retarded and fucked up". It does not matter to me if he knew he was on speakerphone or not. Working in this industry, you do not talk about the deceased in this way. We did not want to have our services here, but due to the pandemic, they were really the only option we had. They worked out an agreement and we ended up having our services there. I would not recommend this location. Find another place that is more respectful. If you have to have your services here, do NOT work with Todd. read more

Losing out mother due to Covid was extremely hard. We were not ready at all. It was very difficult to make decisions but Todd was very helpful and caring. I highly recommend Bay Area Mortuary Services, i booked an appointment the same day after my dogs passing and was met with so much compassion and grace. I was taken to a room just for deceased pets, with candles and very serene. i was able to place her in an alter of sorts and the woman that attended asked me her name and placed a beautiful rose on her. She was very compassionate and did not try to up sell me. she explained the process to me throughly and helped me choose the urn. afterwards she gave me and my accompanying family members some time to light some candles and say goodbye to our little furry friend. i can honestly say that it brought me so much comfort and peace knowing she was being well taken care and treated with respect. I also received her ashes a few days before the estimate. My husband and I took our cat to Bay Area Mortuary after her sudden passing. We spent thousands of dollars trying to save her, and when she died, the vet wanted another $1000 for cremation. I discovered Bay Area Mortuary Pet Services only charged $125 for the same service! We got an appointment for that same day. When we arrived we were greeted by pleasant staff and were invited to wait in their very comfortable waiting area. Soon after we met Kacey, who brought us back to a special area we could bring our cat. There was soft music and a place to rest our kitty near candles. They've really put a lot of care into creating a serene space. Kacey was wonderful and explained to us the process. She'll be spreading her ashes around some redwood trees. After the trauma of losing our cat so suddenly and the financial strain we are under due to medical bills, it's nice to see some businesses offering a wonderful service at a fair price. read more

My family suffered the sudden passing of my brother recently. Not having navigated mortuary services and cremation before, I consulted Yelp. My parents were extremely grief-stricken and I wanted to make sure they were not only treated with compassion, but also not ripped off. Well, this place gets it right with regards to cost. Everything else was below my expectations based on the other reviews. I dealt with Dale. While I don't expect him to cry rivers with me over the loss of my loved one, I did expect him to be less impersonal than he was. I know this industry isn't the most cheerful, but he seemed a little annoyed by the few questions I asked and not very willing to help me through with what needed to be done. Follow-up was ok. I had to call to make sure they received the paperwork I emailed to them and had to ask when they would receive my brother's remains. I was expecting a little more of a basic rundown of how the process would play out. You would think once things were paid for that the service would improve noticeably, but it did not. Dale isn't a bad guy, just not very good with customer service. Definitely not the amazing experience other Yelpers here have had here. When my parents went to pick-up my brother's remains, they wanted to purchase an urn. They don't recall who helped them, but it was an older guy. My parents had already paid for the cremation and only needed to buy the urn. He kept trying to add in the cremation cost on top of the urn cost. He was also devoid of personality. Imagine picking up your deceased child and having to go through a bunch of crap when all you want to do is take the remains home as quickly as possible. Sounded very unpleasant. If you are looking for mortuary service or cremation, this place has great prices. But know that you may sacrifice service in exchange for that. Would I use this place again? Yes, but I hope that I don't have to any time soon because deaths suck. Would I recommend this place to a friend? Yes, but with a disclaimer that they may not be as compassionate or empathetic as one might expect. read more

I have never felt so disrespected before in my entire life. I swear this place has disrespected my family and my grandfather. They forgot to take his fingerprints as requested 3-4 TIMES. We told Felicia MANY times, she "forgot". I emailed a few days ago to HAVE NO RESPONSE. Please reconsider your arrangements if something needs to be changed PLEASE GET IT IN WRITING and signed. And get the names of those that help you. They have yet to reply to my family. And in all honesty we are extremely hurt. I feel as if my grandfather was not at peace. And we will not forgive what was mistakenly missed. " I am emailing in regards to a saddening concern. Yesterday was my grandfather service and our final goodbye. My mother, myself and my fiance, and other family members had asked your Arrangements Coordinator Felicia to bring the flowers my family and other family members to my grandfathers grave site. She then told mygrandmother(his wife) directly into her face that she would bring the flowers herself in your van. Today, my parents and I went to my grandfathers site hoping to see his flowers and we came to nothing. No flowers or anything. My own mother was devastated including myself. My mother had called your Mortuary and spoke to Jeanette whom was very kind. She did not know what had happened to the flowers for my grandfather and had to contact Felicia. She then told her where they were and to find them on the side of your building next to a van. Outside, soaking wet, we of course my mother crying after also finding out some very disappointing news. Jeanette then gave my mother my grandfathers death certificates. Which we were grateful for. Then, my mother asked if my grandfathers fingerprints were available for a keepsake. Jeanette checked the file for my grandfather to find there was no request for a fingerprint. My mother, father, aunt and my own grandmother was there when they requested Felicia to get his fingerprint. Felicia then stated she would give us the information for the keepsake and my mother could not order any keepsake at that time. She said she had to wait until the process was over to order it. Jeannette said there was supposed to be another form with his file requesting fingerprints. My mother lost it and my father was very upset. Jeannette took down my phone number because Felicia was at another service in Oakland, I requested a phone call from her and to have absolutely no phone call back today. My family is hurt, I am hurt that we have nothing to remember him by physically, only mentally. I cannot explain as to how upset I am, my parents are and especially my own grandmother. The rest of our family is also upset. I have no words as to why this would happen, we trusted your Mortuary with my grandfathers being. Only to have myself and my father bring my grandfathers wreaths ourselves and arrange them at his grave ourselves. Then to find out that my mother and grandmothers wishes to have his fingerprints saved to be forgotten about and basically ignored. Then to the point where after my grandfathers service, to loudly say,"OKAY It is time to go!" To transport my grandfather to your hearse. After his burial and seeing him be lowered, for her to tell us,"He was a very simple man, his wife just wishes to be at home in peace, this is what he would have wanted, and that concluded the service and for everyone to start heading home". It was very upsetting. If someone could please explain to us why this had happened. My family and I need answers. I am in utter disbelief to be ignored. My mother and myself wish to be contacted as soon as possible. " read more

The best service ever! Bay Area Mortuary went above and beyond navigating through some very challenging times. Todd and Lorna in particular were amazing! If sending our beloved home to her family and friends in Brazil didn't present its own set of obstacles, COVID 19 really threw things off track. Todd and Lorna met every challenge with grace and professionalism, every phone call was answered on the spot or returned promptly, I felt like I was the only client they had. My experience with my father's sudden death was unimaginable and I don't wish the suffering upon anybody. Aside from all the emotional trauma I had to deal with, there was the financial mess that was thrown onto my family's lap. I also had to figure out how to transfer my father's body from an expensive mortuary to a more affordable establishment that is flexible and willing to meet my needs. Yes, transferring AND receiving is MORE $$$$!!! :( Enter John Sparrer, a wonderful class act of a gentleman that worked with me whenever I needed him. He has decades of experience working in the funeral business and can answer any questions you may have. I spent quite a bit of time with him and got to learn about him and the business. He is a former policeman (you can still see it too ... tall, clean cut, professional) that used to do the motorcades for memorial services. He was disgusted at how much people had to pay for funeral services and decided to go into the mortuary business. The rest is history, and I am glad to have him as a part of my family's life. Oh, and he does P90X too haha. He might be limited in some ways since it is a smaller mortuary, but he can cater to any basic funeral, especially when keeping your budget in mind. EVERYTHING is cheaper, both the services and products alike (casket, flowers, decor, etc.) The memorial hall is small, so if you need a larger service 100+ people, you can find a larger place elsewhere and Sparrer can work with you. NO RIDICULOUS FEES! That is the best part of Bay Area Mortuary. Being an avid Yelper, I wanted to write about them months ago because I felt so thankful, but the last thing I wanted on my mind was writing about anything dealing with my father's death.
