I had found BPA for Ketamine treatment. They apparently accept Medi-Cal but not Health Plan of San Mateo. My current Psychiatrist filled paperwork for a single case agreement based on treatment resistance. I filled the online form, got a call back and then was told they don't accept my insurance. I have been working with my insurance and was told they need to give prior authorization, which they apparently don't know how to do. My insurance sent them instructions on how to do it but they've been unresponsive after 3 months. read more

I go to the SF location, but I can't find their Yelp page, so leaving this here. I came to BPA with after a long history of trying various antidepressants and talk therapy. My depression was still bad, and I decided to look into Spravato treatment. The medication's website listed BPA as a provider of it. After verifying they accept my insurance (important!! many other esketamine/ketamine therapy providers do not), I did the full course of treatments. It changed my life. I was still me, but now without all the dread and sadness hanging over me. BPA the entire time was very good with keeping appointments, followups, discussing any insurance costs, etc. and the staff are kind. I'm very grateful I found them. I am knocking off one star because my positive experiences were for Spravato only, and when I looked into medication management, it was much more difficult. Their doctors are swamped. I wish this was communicated to me as a "we cannot accept new patients" immediately rather than a "we are working on it" over the span of a month. read more

I wasn't initially going to write a review of this place, but when I learned that my wife's (she went here for treatment too) review was removed, it made me want to make sure other patients are aware of what they're getting into when they come here, knowing BPA is heavily censoring out negative reviews. My main advice to anyone considering BPA for ketamine treatment would be to not come here at all. I hate to say it, but it's true for me. I experienced most of the doctors as very dismissive, some made me feel scared and like my boundaries weren't being respected, some don't follow basic standards of care, nor ethical and legal codes around ketamine administration and how to make a safe set and setting for entheogenic-assisted therapies. Many of the docs have billed our insurance for an hour-long psychotherapy code when the doctor only actually talked to me for five minutes or less (before anyone tries to argue that ketamine changes your sense of time: I know this from looking at my watch). That's usually considered insurance fraud, in my experience as a mental health professional. This place seems to mostly care about making money and not about actual patient care. You often get shuffled through appointments in less than two hours as they're constantly trying to see more patients and add more ketamine treatment rooms in order to make more money. They might call this "helping more people," but it actually hurts the quality of care given to the existing patients and ends up being worse for everyone and everything except the doctor's bank accounts. It made me as a patient feel like I didn't matter and wasn't worth their time. It's very disorienting being moved between rooms or having to leave while still very much "high." The walls are uninsulated and you can hear everything happening in the rooms adjacent to you, as well as in the waiting room. I could hear other patients' names, their whole talk session, and the details of their ketamine experience. Sometimes you will hear other patients screaming, banging on walls, etc. which feels quite scary in general and especially when you're trying to sink into your own ketamine experience. You can also hear all the doors opening and closing and because of their weight it's often a frightening "slam" sound. This happened multiple times every time I was at the clinic. It's so loud I could still hear all this WHILE wearing noise cancelling earphones. For these reasons, it could be very triggering to get treatment here if you have severe depression or PTSD. I know it was for me. The techs are kind and treated poorly by those with more power than them. It's sad to see. They're the people NOT actually making more money from all the changes, yet having to do more work. I do have to shout to Dr. Cohen, who stands out as kind, relatable, and very smooth and humanistic in his clinical style. And of course Dr. Duran who is the reason I kept coming to this otherwise pretty terrible clinic for a long time. He is gentle, sweet, and smart and has some quality I can't quite name which makes his presence lead to deeper ketamine sessions. Unfortunately though you can't even reliably get sessions with the doctors who make you feel safe. BPA on principle doesn't seem to place much importance on the actual therapeutic alliance, so you often end up being shuffled amongst many different doctors every week especially if you didn't manage to schedule things three months in advance. If something changes and the doctor you were scheduled with is sick, they won't tell you, so you don't even find out until you get to the clinic. In addition to it not being the right setting for me, I realized I was paying money into a system that I take a lot of ethical issues with (recall: insurance fraud, mis treatment of techs who are at the bottom of the pay totem pole, and a profit sharing model that benefits only the doctors (and maybe a few other stakeholders) and incentivizes quick-- rather than good and thorough-- clinical care). I'm using a remote ketamine treatment service now and it feels so much better to be in a place where I feel safe, to have as much time as I need for the session, and to pay less for a better quality ketamine experience. I'd recommend others do the same and not waste time or emotional energy trying to make BPA work for what you need. read more

I receive care from Panid Sharifnia MD, phD and have nothing but good things to say. Ive had a few other providers that never felt really engaged to care to even ask questions about my experiences or past which is my assumption necessary to know how to prescribe. They are good, ethical, caring providers. I would say Dr. Priesman could be good for some people, he could feel kind of aloof, but he also had some good days. I would not recommend Dr. Schumm as I found him very dismissive. I would not recommend Dr. Compton. I think if I say more this review will get taken down. If you go to this clinic and it feels eerie and a little HIPAA-questionable, well, that's how I felt. read more

Through the recommendation of my PCP, I scheduled an appointment with Doctor Pennybaker of Bay Psychiatric Associates for 7/30. The office called back asking to reschedule for August, promising I'd receive an appointment confirmation email. Weeks later, I'd received no confirmation email AND I received a reminder for my 7/30 appointment. Assuming this information meant my appointment hadn't been rescheduled, I got up early for my appointment--and the doctor never showed. When I called Pennybaker's office, I was told the appointment *was* indeed rescheduled for August but couldn't explain why I had received no confirmation for the new appointment, nor why I had received a reminder for the old appointment. read more

I have received outstanding treatment at Bay Psychiatric. The entire office is warm, professional and helpful. I have seen several people here including Dr. Trautner, Dr. Woodward, and Dr. Schumm. My son saw Dr. Epstein. The nurses and other treatment professionals I interact with also provide the very best treatment. The office support staff is communicative and professional. Finding a therapist is like finding a husband. It is one of the most important relationships in your life but not everyone clicks. It takes time to find the perfect match. It's good to remember that when seeking mental healthcare. Meet a lot of people and don't take it personally if the first person you meet isn't a fit. Keep meeting doctors until you find the one that feels right. And remember to change doctors if your needs change over time. Negligent, disorganized, and non-responsive. I spent FIVE weeks in the intake process trying to get an appointment with Dr. Umee Davae. From my initial phone call, I was assured that Dr. Davae was taking new patients and that my insurance was accepted. I was on the phone with their office weekly following up, and re-iterating information I had already given to them because things kept getting lost. Keep in mind this is all while I'm not feeling my best and in need of support. Very very slow process, many scheduled phone appointments and pieces of information I gave them fell through the cracks. I felt like I had to manage my own case the whole time and ended up being denied care after five weeks. My experience was bad enough that I ended up reaching out to the administrator, Jamie Villegas. I never got a response. This place is like a walled castle, I felt like I was begging for help, trying to speak with anyone with some competence and sense of care. There are people who are really suffering and in need of help who are reaching out for help to this place, and they're just ignored completely. It was such a waste of my time trying to work with this organization. I walked away feeling dejected and disrespected. Avoid this place. read more

I don't think it was an accident. Most likely it was positive karma that I have such a great psychiatrist. She is the greatest. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Kaila Compton to receive ketamine therapy for my depression and anxiety about three years ago. Ever since, she has been a lot more than a doctor to me. I have had a crisis a few times. She fullly stood with me. She is the main reason I have managed to make it so far. She has made herself available to me during emergencies. I always had permission to contact her, even when I didn't have an appointment with her. I am very vulnerable to external stimuli due to my emotional sissues. She has been my number one supporter. I feel much better and safer every since she has been my psychiatrist. She means a lot to me. I perceive her as a gift from God. Sometimes I wonder if she is an angel in human form. PS: Soon after I started seeing Dr. Compton, I have been through hell because I live in a senior and I and a bunch of other residents have been constantly harrassed, intimidated, humiliated, etc. by the management. This could cause emotional suffering for anyone, let alone someone who has an emotional disability already. My depression, anxiety, and sleep disorder started getting worse and worse. Plus, I started feeling scared and paranoid all the time. I have also started experiencing memory loss, severe tension headaches, and even stomach issues. During this time, she adopted a very responsible attitude in terms of feeling obliged to help me through this ordeal. She played a major role in me keeping my sanity. It was due to her sympathy and empathy that I managed to survive, because according to her, I was about to have a nervous breadown as a result of this. She mentioned I was on the verge of having one. From the bottom of my heart, I thank God for having her. Her actions and services in the line of duty and especially humanity are noteworthy. She has a heart of gold, most undoubtably. I have to give accolades to Dr. Lucas Jones for his stalwart, professional, and caring service for my depression. I am able to say that because of my ongoing Ketamine treatment, now 1 year, I am not depressed! This is a very big deal since I have lifelong depression, have tried at least 20 medications and modalities with no remission, have been under the care of Psychiatrists for 50!! years, and at age 75, not to feel bad about myself is a miracle! I also take 1 antidepressant which seems to work well with Ketamine. I chose Bay Psychiatric because of their depression support, and Dr. Jones is "the Ketamine guy"-we continue to work together, and slowly but surely, I can report that I am becoming free from depression. I first became a patient of Dr. Christopher Michel in 2009 as an adolescent. I saw him weekly for the following 10 years for medication management and psychotherapy. I only switched psychiatrists when I moved to another part of California permanently. In 2023, I needed some additional support temporarily and my existing therapist was unable to see me weekly at that time, so I reached back out to Dr. Michel and he helped me via telehealth for another 6 months. When Dr. Michel first started seeing me in 2009, I was in a very bad place psychiatrically, and I can confidently say he saved my life. He is highly skilled and very compassionate. I am grateful for all of the help he has given me throughout my adolescence and adulthood. I'm now age 30, and I probably wouldn't be here if not for his psychiatric interventions. I want to echo the other review about unethical practices around sending bills to collections. I was called two years after an appointment and told I would be sent to collections over a $40 copay. I used to work in accounts receivable and cannot emphasize how not industry standard this is. A standard way to do this would involve multiple phone calls and manual emails about outstanding balances, not just sending automated emails that often end up in spam. The doctor I saw was great, but this would definitely prevent me from ever returning or recommending. read more

I have received decades of attuned, skillful, and knowledgeable care for many years.

Shockingly bad intake policy & procedures. BPS is recommended by my insurance company, but 3 weeks in (and 3 phone calls from me to see where I might be in the intake process) yields nothing. No communication, no confirmation of where I am in the process, no comment as to whether the physician of choice is even available for new patients. Uninspiring staff who answer their phones give the same dead feedback: "They don't tell us where someone is in line, or if the person requested is available...You should hear something in a few weeks." When this is the first - and continued - optic, it is difficult to imagine that BPA has quality, compassionate, and professional care. I note that my experience and review comes after BPA's assurance earlier this week to another unhappy consumer that they have streamlined their intake process. One wonders what it was before. As a working professional in SF, I'll share feedback with my insurance provider and look elsewhere. read more

Telemedicine "interview" with DO Davae was more like talking to a prosecutor than a doctor, never mind a MENTAL HEALTH professional. I was thinking of trying Ketamine for my lifelong PTSD; instead the appointment ADDED to my trauma! No warmth or softness. In addition there is NO WAY to email her directly; she doesn't HAVE an email address, doesn't answer her own phone; she's behind a firewall. The only way I got a response from her was to "report" her to a board member whom I knew. Adding insult to injury, she ordered lab tests that were UNNECESSARY had she asked me directly about them and I now have an uninsured lab bill for closed to $500.
