I finally was able to stop to visit Bayou Rum Distillery. Happened to be a Monday. It happened to be closed. A man came out a side door to greet me. Said they were closed and having a meeting. Stop by the distillery with my family driving between Lake Charles and. Aton Rouge. It's off the freeway, but with construction it takes a bit of effort to reach. Plenty of parking and great, new facility. We missed the tour, buy I think it was $10 and includes tasting. We paid $5 for the tasting and at 10am we were the only ones at the distillery. We got to try all 7 rums. They are made on site and almost all their flavorings are local, e.g. Satsuma grown locally. The rums aren't super sweet like Bacardi and had some depth. I enjoyed their spiced rum, think less sweet Captain Morgan's. We bought a couple of bottles, about $18 each. The staff was really friendly and nice. They double-bubble wrapped our bottles for easy shipping in luggage. The bottles came in super cute bags that can double as gift bags. Nice bathrooms. They also bottle and sell a whiskey for another distillery. I think it was Kentucky Owl. read more

The distillery was wonderful but the tour needs help. The guide spoke too fast and did not allow the time needed for the two individuals in the group with a walking disability. Also she sped through the tasting at the end. More time was needed between items to ask questions and enjoy the different tastes of the rums. We tried something different this time: flew into Houston, TX, and on day two, decided to drive across the great state of Louisiana, stopping at rum distilleries along the way. Our first stop was about 2.5 hours from Texas City, TX, where we were staying, in the town of Lacassine, LA. We arrived just in time to catch a tour wrapping up, which allowed us to sign up for a tasting. We recently visited this distillery, and let me tell you, it's an experience unlike any other. When you arrive, it feels like stepping onto a campus dedicated entirely to rum. The setup is impressive, with multiple buildings that make it clear this is a place where rum reigns supreme. As we entered the main building, it literally took our breath away--everything about it was stunning, from the design to the atmosphere. I inquired about a tasting, and the staff mentioned that a tour was just wrapping up and we could join in for a tasting session. For $10 per person, we got to sample the selections they provided, which was a great way to dive into their craft. It's worth noting that this isn't your typical distillery with a bar or cocktail lounge setup. The focus here is on bottle sales and sampling the rum itself, making it ideal for those who truly want to savor the flavors and learn about the process. If you're looking for a place to grab a drink and hang out, this might not be the spot, but if you're a rum enthusiast, it's an absolute must-visit! We sampled seven different rums, starting with the Bayou White, which had a tequila-like taste with notes of vanilla and green apple on the nose. The Spiced Rum wasn't your typical spiced rum--it had a cinnamon aroma, with flavors of maple, banana, and vanilla, making it taste amazing. The Reserve offered hints of vanilla, apple, and cinnamon, with a finish of fruit and barrel-aged warmth. The Pink was on the sweeter side, and lastly, my favorite, the Mardi Gras, aged for five years, had a floral nose with cedar wood, stone fruit, plum, sandalwood, and dried dark fruit. Stopped here on our way to Lafayette and glad we did. Easy / quick little history lesson on sugar cane farming and rum making in Louisiana, and a quick little factory tour by friendly and knowledgeable staff. I liked learning about the barrel aging process and in the end we got to taste the various varieties and flavored rums. We also got to try the rare aged varieties. The next door conference / event hall is massive and beautiful. Worth a look if passing through. read more

I had never tried this rum previously and only made this stop because of rave reviews by the local Harley Davidson dealership. Im not really a rum fan - more of a JD girl. Im so glad we stopped in! We took the tour snd our guide was informative with a dry witty humor I can appreciate! We got to taste several flavors and I left there with a bottle of Pink, satsuma orange and coffee flavors. This time is yummmmy! I have a new go-to for rum and some great new drink ideas. And get, I cannot wait to get home and use the coffee rum in brownie mix!!! At 6'7" I've never felt more invisible. I watched the bartender engage with all the patrons begging for their free sample. All the sudden becoming rum experts! The bar served everyone. Even some twice. The I asked her if I was invisible. With a dumbfounded look on her face she said no. What would I like to try. I told her whatever you have been poring everyone else the past 10 min. She got another a sample. Then just plucked mine down. Walked away. Didn't say a word! Out of spite I will NEVER buy this product! I will never get a drink with it! Stopped by to visit and do a tour of the distillery and was never greeted or acknowledged, this was on a Wednesday afternoon with 2 young caucasian ladies working. The workers did all they could to avoid my wife and I even after we intentionally said hello to one of them. I don't know if any other black folks have experienced this type of treatment but I won't be supporting this business ever again! Please do better, it's 2024! read more

He poured some shots of each rum for us to try. He provided many suggestions about different mixers for each variety of rum. We loved it so much, we bought 6 bottles! Had the best time at this distillery. Our tour guide as informative and absolutely hilarious. The sampling was out of this world and not stingy what so ever. There was a cool introductory video to begin with. Then the tour was aesthetically pleasing. The barrels and distillery process was fascinating. Cane was a great bartender! Tasting the basic five the Mardi Gras and rye barrel finished rims require an $8 fee, worth it for one of our party, but not the other. Fun little distillery, well, I guess I can't say it was little. They offer free tours and tastings daily. But the tours are every hour on the hour. We showed up 10 after, and were told we had to wait for the next tour. Since we were traveling back to Texas, we were unable to wait, but they did let us watch the video that kicks off the tour and continue with the tasting. There are 4 different runs, you get 2 tastings per person, but if you're with "someone your trust," you can try all 4. You get a sample of their specialty drink and they also sample their rum cake too. Satsuma rum was hands down the best, so tasty, juicy and refreshing. If you buy rum, they bag it in crawfish bags, it's so cute! And lots of novelty items in the gift shop: clothing, gifts, liquor, koozies, bar items, baby ware, books, houseware, you name it, they most likely have it. read more

This is a really neat place, and they have some spectacular rums. We did the tasting and tried six of their blends the gatorbite and the spiced are stand outs. They provide short distillery tours, samples, and lots of unique gift items from the distillery and Louisiana overall, so if you need to take a traveling friend or a local this is a simple fun stop that will get you in the "spirit" of fun [pun intended]. Bayou Rum what a great stop in Louisiana just a 12 miles drive from Lake Charles. First off our tour guide female (sorry forgot her name ) was amazing she was very enjoying and energetic thank you. After our free tour we did a tasting of their rum product and for $8 more you can get and extra tasting of their prized rum which is the Xo and reserved product. Omg out of those two extra shots I got a little baked so we walked over to cafe bayou also owed by bayou rum and had chocolate rum cake and iced coffee. A definitely must go to while in south Louisiana. Will comeback. They have private tours and an event center if your having a wedding or party. read more

I went on a Sunday, and they said it was really slow all day, no sure why they are open on Sundays, but it worked out. Stopped by passing through one afternoon. The tour guide was awesome! Funny guy welcomed us to take the tour even though we just walked in. He was very witty and kept the group entertained the whole time. Then a tasting of all of their rums afterwards and for free!?! We ended up leaving with a bottle of the tricentennial rum, and can't wait to crack it open. Then we'll fill the empty bottle with tea!
