You take your foot off the gas. Club Mallard. You need to know. The interior is dark and warm and full of dead birds. Mounted, taxidermied, presiding over the room with the glassy authority of creatures who didn't expect to end up in a bar in Albany but have made their peace with it. The effect is somewhere between hunting lodge and natural history museum after hours, and it shouldn't work on San Pablo Avenue but it does, completely, the way any sufficiently committed aesthetic decision will eventually override its context. I've been once. Midweek happy hour. This is the most honest way to evaluate a bar -- no weekend crowd to inflate the energy, no event to justify the turnout, just the place and whoever shows up on a Tuesday because they want to be there. The happy hour is good. The bartender was gregarious and present and seemed to actually like the job, which sounds like a low bar until you've spent enough time on the other side of it. The regulars were friendly in the East Bay way, which is to say they talked to us without needing anything from us, offered opinions on what to drink, and went back to their conversations. There's an outdoor space for when you want sky. I've driven past since and seen it packed. I was glad. You root for a place like Club Mallard the way you root for any small enterprise that decided to be something specific in a landscape of sameness, and then just held the line.

It also happens to be somewhat of a meeting point when I'm in Oakland and another friend is in Berkeley. When I was in downtown Oakland it was only 14 minutes away. What a time. I like this bar because the drinks are good, it's affordable, all ages come here and the vibe is nice. There is a pool table downstairs and about two or three upstairs along with a mini bar. The fire place is currently keeping the bar cozy downstairs. So, I've liked Cosmopolitans for some time now and Mallard's has a Mandarin Cosmo. It is so good - it reminds me of an Orange Hi-C.

We have new neighbors who have just moved in. They're expecting a baby in August and will eventually be looking for a baby sitter. When Tam was 11 or 12 she took a baby sitting class her and was certified as a trained and trustworthy sitter. Not that she needed training or certification. Even then she was awesome and some parents were intimidated by her level of organization. It's not clear whether they still offer these classes. but they do offer an array of others. I've taken a few over the years. They host occasional art shows and the yearly heritage rose show. We happened on an art auction there a few years ago and bought a piece of Disney art for Tam and Kevin's anniversary. When Tam and Ilana still lived here in El Cerrito, Ilana took swimming lessons here and once I accompanied her to watch her class. It's a busy and useful center w/ activities for all ages. It's available for rental for private events, like weddings. The annual July 4th Fair is held here, w/ music and food and other booths. There's a Halloween party each year which draws the kids, who no longer come trick or treating in our neighborhood. It's a community resource.

Teeter Tots: This…read moreis nothing but glorified babysitting (and? some babysitters would be far better for your child). The director talks about confidential issues regarding the children and parents in front of all the children and staff. The director has teased children and belittled them for crying for too long. Yes-- the children will learn things in this program. They will learn in any program, and.. this program Is far from quality. Some things are borderline neglect: emotional and physical. This is NOT a play-based program, as advertised. This is a top down, adult driven program. There are many things in this program that need fixing and it doesn't look like the director or city are that interested in making it better. I would highly recommend choosing something different for yourself and your child.

From its website:…read more "The El Cerrito Historical Society is a non-political, non-profit organization and has only one agenda: to locate and preserve local history - of course focused on the history of El Cerrito. " ************************************************************************ To my surprise, the El Cerrito HIstorical Society has allowed me to be a lifetime member. After all, I'm not a native. My family moved here from Albany (which is a good half mile away) when I was in kindergarten. So, I've never truly belonged to El Cerrito. I'm usually either identified as an Albany kid (think of red-white-blue bunting) or as one of those Berkeley-pinko-types. But never you mind, I am a lifetime member of the El Cerrito HIstorical Society. And you can be, too! All it takes is an interest in the city and a small lifetime membership donation. Annual memberships are also available. * ** If you have any memories or old photos of the time when El Cerrito really *was* a place where Sally Rand, the stripper, waved her fans, the EC HIstorical Society would love to chat. Yep...it was at the "It Club" where Sally performed. Central and San Pablo. Just down the road from the old Castro adobe which is now the EC Plaza. ***If you happen to know the folks who built all of the stone walls in Huber Park, the El Cerrito HIstorical Society wants to talk with you. The Society has met in this park several times. Folks will be happy to tell you how the place got its name. And why Grammer's bench has a little bench sitting right next to it. *** If you are simply curious about the town, the El Cerrito HIstorical Society has several books available. My personal favorite is "Harem-Scarem: the Life of a LIttle Girl Growing Up in El Cerrito, California" by Neva Calvert Carpenter. You can get "Harem-Scarem" through the Society, at local bookstores or...(I wince as I say this) online through Amazon. So, if you passed through El Cerrito at some time during your journey through life, think of getting a lifetime membership to the historical society. You'll be in good company. Me.
