The coffee (like any coffee in Australia) was amazing. I came for the pavlova at every chance I got, and they did not fail to make us a perfectly crafted pavlova every time. My daughter got their macha cake and was loving that as well. I was in New Zealand a few weeks prior and was told that pavlova is a dessert that New Zealand also claimed to be its own, but I only found it in one place, in donut form. Once I got to Australia, I was able to get pavlova everywhere, but this place has it down to a science. The ice cream, cream toppings, and fruits that go with it were all perfectly made well together.

As a child growing up in the North West I had my fair share of Cannoli and continental cakes and I have to say I was never a big fan of the slightly soggy cannoli shell filled with sickly sweet custard, this is saying something as I am quite the sweet tooth. So fast forward 15 years and here I am in Footscray and I thought I would roll the Cannoli dice again and WOW what an awesome surprise it was. Freshly filled in store with beautiful ricotta filling I fell in love with the crispy shell and delicious filling. Since then I have to say I have had a bit of an ongoing love affair with the family at T.Cavallaro who are always amazingly friendly, have yummy new biscuits to try and ice chocolates/coffees to have in their small shop. I adore it here, it makes me feel like I am sitting in an italian loungeroom having a chat and a snack. It really is a tiny bit of italy in the food bowl that is Footscray :)

My boyfriend's dish was more Yemeni (this eatery is known for their "mandi," meat cooked in the ground), but my vegetarian platter seemed more Ethiopian -- it came with injera bread that you eat with your hands. The injera bread was tasty and I found myself taking huge dollops of zhug and smacking it on my injera bread, which was probably totally the wrong thing to do and I have no concept of whether you're supposed to mix Ethiopian food and Yemeni food, ha. Whatever, it was delicious ;) The place itself is small, cheap and cheerful, with some traditional rooms in the back where you can sit on the floor and eat, Middle-Eastern and North-African style. The only thing we faulted them for was that the food took FOREVER to arrive. Close to an hour, and the place wasn't that busy. Finally they came out and said there was a problem with my boyfriend's dish and they had to make him something else. They were incredibly nice about the whole thing and they gave him a free dessert to make up for it. But it was a bit unprofessional to make us wait for close to an hour before telling us there was a problem with the dish. And it wasn't just us -- there were some guys in one of the traditional rooms in the back who came up and complained to the owners in Arabic that they'd been waiting for their food for close to an hour, too. So I don't know what was going on, but hopefully it was just a one-off and next time we go back, the food will be quicker to arrive.

The flavors are impossible to describe in these dishes but are absolute perfection. She got the eggs Benedict which is placed on a base of yuzu instead of the traditional muffin. We scraped the sauce up using the lotus root and lettuce until nothing was left. The steak was tender and flavorful with a mushroom gravy that wasn't too heavy but perfect for dipping the fries and eggs into. It's all I think about now, day in and day out until I can go back and eat it again. It haunts my every waking minute. I don't know what I'll do when I have to fly home and can't get it back in the states. If you find yourself anywhere near Melbourne...or Australia...make the trek to Humble Rays in Carlton. It's worth it. Everything on the menu looked amazing. The banana matcha cloud and Orange espresso are both unique and unexpected plays on the traditional drinks that will change your mind about all sorts of flavors. The service and ambience also win!
