Dad had a coffee and a slice of carrot cake, while mum and I chose to have something more substantial. (Dessert is substantial right?) Mum ordered the three cheese souffle which was served with what I can only describe as a beetroot terrine. The souffle was yum and now I'm tempted to try and make it at home, as well as the beetroot terrine. Layers of beetroot and beetroot jelly. I ordered the shiraz poached pear served with vanilla ice cream. This dish was also yum but seeing as the menu seemed to be favouring local produce I was expecting more. I felt that the dish was served with too much of the poaching liquid I would have liked it to be strained as biting into a bay leaf wasn't all the appetising. That said the pear was yummy and a I enjoyed the meal. I just would have liked the pear to have been cored so I didn't have to eat around the pips and I would have prefered home made ice cream. Some of the best milk in the area could really be utilised here. Would I come back? Absolutely! Would I expect less than the menu seems to promote? Yes, and it will be enjoyable.

We had one soy cappucino and a doppio (double piccolo latte) and they were fine, a bit milky but filled a need. The folk in the annexed dining room sounded like they were having a great time. All the meals are served in cute little cardboard boxes and they do a good coffee too. A switched on older couple sitting next to us also pointed out the carboard cartons, wondering if they were recycled. I then asked the waitress if the packaging that our meal was served on would be recycled or go in the rubbish and she went to ask another staff person. She reported back that it would go in the rubbish as all meals are served ready-to-go and the cardboard cartons for dine-in meals saves on dishwasher water. I am unconvined by this logic and unimpressed by eco-marketing that embraces some aspects of sustainability to suit their buisness and disregards other elements such as recycling and contributing to landfill. This cafe does good business and would be generating significant amounts of waste from eco-minded customers who, based on the cafe's promotional information, believe they are supporting an environmentally sustainable business. It would not be difficult to recycle the cardboard or explore other options such as bamboo plates that are biodegradeable, employing a good old fashioned dishwasher, or using economy cycles on an industrial dishwasher and then recycling the greywater into their back garden cafe area where it could nourish herbs and vegies. It was awkward to eat my salad out of the carboard box inside a cardboard carton and my spanakopita was microwaved which made it soggy and not as fresh tasting as I had anticipated. The cushions on the outside chairs were very dirty and needed a wash too ... they don't need to be thrown into the garbage along with the cardboard plates! It is fantastic to see cafes like the Jetty Food Store supporting local growers , practising fair trade, selling organic produce etcetera, but dig a little deeper and the eco-bubble bursts. On a holiday Monday recently, Three Monkeys was brimming with other holiday makers lunching on their very simple but scrumptious gourmet items. The menu is based on local produce - and why wouldn't you be with McLaren Vale and the Fleurieu on your doorstep - and all freshly cooked. This quaint and quirky cottage has limited seating inside but a lovely outdoor area seating probably about 20 out back. There is also a delicatessen specialising in a very thoughtful and extensive range of cheeses and gourmet produce. Fantastic coffee also. I have my sights set on a weekend in Willunga soon to revel in this gorgeous town's over abundance of eateries. Friday night - Russell's Pizza, Sat morning Willunga Organic Market, Sat arvo drop into Three Monkeys for a delectable coffee and cake and pick up tasting plate supplies for a night in with a good drop of local Cab Sav by the fireside of a cute B & B (or a booking at Fino if I can't be bothered cooking) and finally breakfast Sunday am at the Green Room on High Street. Drive back along Aldinga Beach via the Victory Hotel at Sellicks and I have a weekend made in heaven!! Willunga in my opinion now beats McLaren Vale for a foodie weekend (excluding of course the legendary wine appeal of McLaren Vale)!

Then I read the menu (luckily breakfast finishes at 12pm otherwise I would have totally doubled up on my egg allocation for the day). And then the waitress apologised for serving a double shot of coffee to the customer, because that's how she always did it. And I knew my sensible eating plan for the day wasn't going to work. So instead of the planned "I'll just have some cheese and crackers," coming out of my mouth, I uncontrollably asked if I "could have the quinoa and carrot salad with fetta and flatbread please?" Before it arrived, I had talked myself into "just eating half of the salad and having the other half for dinner." And then I began to shovel piled forks of carrot and quinoa salad with dates and a white bean puree into my mouth and before I knew it, there was no doggy bag required. Even better was that they had run out of flatbread and so served me a couple of slices of their tomato polenta bread. It is now official, they should charge more than $13 for the salad and then ALWAYS serve this warmed and crispy with it in the future. Do not be fooled by the few seats inside and out the front, they have a lovely garden area out back for you to dine in with friends. This place would be delightful on a sunny autumn day or cold winter's morning and is one for the "bookmark" list of places to eat in Willunga.
