My 7-year old son has been interested in fencing for a couple of years but many fencing clubs do not have lessons for young children. To the best of my knowledge, Beaches NY Sabre is the only fencing club in the Capital Region that has lessons for kids as young as 6 years old. The space that the students take lessons in and practice in, the historical Guild House in Troy, is amazing. My son took his first, of no doubt, many lessons yesterday and loved it. We weren't even out of the door and he was already saying "I want to come back tomorrow". Coach Washburn is patient and thorough and teaches students of all different skill levels. It was also really nice that they have all of the equipment for the students to use at no extra charge beyond the lesson cost. Because there is no requirement to buy expensive gear, it is actually a very affordable sport for kids to be involved in. My son is looking forward to his next lesson with much anticipation. read more

I came to NYHFA looking…read morefor an instructor in a western sword art who could do three things: 1) Fight (that is, spar) against absolutely anybody, from anywhere, with a reasonable chance of winning. 2) Use a real (sharp) sword to cut resistive targets in the manner that he fights. 3) Defend the historical provenance of the techniques he teaches in terms of the period manuals upon which historical European martial arts are based. Mike Edelson, the head instructor at NYHFA, absolutely does all three. In particular, he's recognized across the country for his skill with and understanding of real, sharp longswords, and is regularly asked to teach seminars on cutting at national events. As a teacher, he's laid back and pays attention to individual students, but a very serious martial artist with demonstrable skill - just the combination I want. He also makes sure to explain everything in practical terms - if you're doing something wrong, he'll tell you why it doesn't or wouldn't work, not just that you're doing it wrong. Though the school doesn't train for tournaments specifically, we do regularly attend and compete in (students and instructor) both regional and national tournaments, which are a great chance to meet folks from other schools as well as test your skill against people you don't train with every week. I think Mike strikes a great balance between encouraging his students to see the value of competitions and keeping our fencing from sliding into a purely sportified game. A skilled, accessible teacher, a welcoming atmosphere, and bona fide historical techniques - what more could you want? If you want to learn how to use a real longsword, for real, this is your place.

The coaches are great at what they do (and have amazing credentials). I have learned so much and made so much progress without feeling like I'm at a boot camp - definitely having fun in the process. Everyone is very welcoming and and friendly and are always willing to help each other out. It is not uncommon to see national level competitors fencing with less experienced fencers and helping them improve. It's also great to see the older teenagers who have trained for assistant coach volunteering to help with the younger kids and some being recruited by colleges. And it's not just for kids (there are some families who fence together, which is pretty neat), I took my first class there at the age of 30. Classes and membership are much cheaper than I expected. They provide equipment too.

The greens are kept in perfect shape with no ruffled turf, loose bricks, piles of leaves, etc. The (very blue) waterfall was working and added ambiance. Scattered throughout the course are interesting pirate vignettes and facts, and the caves and bridges added to the experience. The course itself is a bit different from most others. Many courses add artificial challenges (sand bunkers, gravel areas, missing sidewalls near water, windmills, etc.) to make it difficult. Here, every hole is straightforward. And most of them are short. Therefore, it is best to approach it as each hole could (should?) be doable as a hole-in-one. And I got two, my friend got another two, and everyone around us was getting them. Does that mean the course is too easy? No, not at all. But, it isn't a course where you should be taking more than 2-3 putts to get it in the cup. There are no dogleg holes, etc. which add length. Some of the holes have fun twists. I won't give away the surprises, but there were several areas that led to good (and bad!) unexpected results. Play it out and you will see what I mean. The staff were friendly, and they had at least six different sized putters making it possible to get the perfect fit. The prices ($13) were certainly reasonable and comparable to other courses. It was packed on Saturday on a holiday weekend, but because the holes are so short everything kept on flowing nicely. Overall, a wonderful course.

The indoor pool is on the small side, but it's also (as far as I know) the only indoor pool that doesn't require an apartment lease or hotel room booking within the city of Albany, which makes it the biggest indoor pool in town. The gym facilities also look pretty extensive, but I haven't actually come for the gym yet -- I'm in it for the swimming. The staff I've interacted with have been universally nice and helpful. My biggest complaint would be that the indoor pool closes so early, I assume for staffing reasons. Also, keep in mind that they require you to reserve your lane ahead of time for the indoor pool. I like the policy, since it saves you from going to the gym, getting changed and showering only to realize that there are no free lanes, but if you like to be more spontaneous about your workouts the JCC pool might not be for you.

There are a heck of a lot of services and activities associated with the JCC. The largest would seem to be the nursery school, the gym and the pool. If you had a nursery school aged kid, and enjoyed to lift weights and swim for some good low impact cardio, you would probably never leave this place. But that's just not me.
