Started going to Beacon 2 years ago for an acute injury and now this team is supporting me through a complex crisis as well. I owe my wellness solely to this group of PTs. A friend recommended Beacon PT to me and I was lucky enough to book an appointment with Dr. Kurt Gorrell. I was suffering from severe and constant neck pain that wouldn't even let me sleep, let alone other daily activities and I had gone to so many sessions of chiropractic therapy with no/minimal and temporary results and was very hopeless at that point. On the initial assessment we went over my health history and I was reminded of accidents/injuries I had forgotten about, and he was very thorough with his physical assessment. The biggest surprise was opening his after visit email with detailed reviews/instruction on exercises we went through at the clinic with pictures and videos. My neck pain completely resolved after only 2-3 sessions with Dr. Kurt (I'm writing this review 1 year after my therapy is over and yes I am still pain free). I've had back pain for a long time, since college sports. I've tried 10+ physical therapists in San Francisco, and Beacon is the only one that consistently addresses the root pain. Their therapists focus on the structural imbalances and I walk away feeling immediate relief. For my treatments, my sessions are essentially an extremely deep and targeted massage that are far more effective than chiropractors or acupuncture. It's painful but it provides the relief that corrects my imbalances. I recommend them to everyone, particularly for delicate areas such as the neck. read more

Charlie King is the best healthcare professional - of any kind - that I've ever seen. I've unfortunately had a series of musculoskeletal issues for over a decade: foot, ankle, shin, wrist, shoulder, jaw, you name it. I've been to countless podiatrists, orthopedists, chiropractors, neurologists, neuromuscular specialists, and more... with very little improvement. Since I started seeing Charlie in 2018, I've seen drastic improvements in several of these areas. One of the keys to his ability, I think, is that Charlie is open-minded and treats the whole patient, instead of focusing narrowly on how physical therapy should treat a particular diagnostic code. He carefully observes how your whole system is working - or not working - and then formulates some ideas on how to treat that. He specializes in Functional Manual Therapy (direct, often forceful movement akin to chiropractic or massage), but is very open to other methods and works well with other specialists. It's refreshing to work with someone who acknowledges when his current tactics _aren't_ working and when it's time to try something new. Finally, Charlie is just a great person. He's thoughtful, warm, attentive, and even funny! And that really matters when you spend many hours stuck in a small room with him. From my small amount of experience, the other physical therapists at Beacon are also excellent and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. Even the front-desk staff is awesome - Quintin is fabulous and friendly. So in conclusion, please don't go to see Charlie because I don't want his calendar to get any busier. One star!!! read more

I came to Beacon after spending two months at another PT facility for a slipped disk in my back. I was in quite a bit of pain and had even gotten a recommendation to consider surgery after an MRI. My first appointment with Charlie quickly reassured me that I was finally working with someone knowledgable enough to help me. Within weeks, he was able to decrease my pain and discomfort and I was able to dance comfortably at my wedding. Some of the appointments where he worked to loosen my psoas weren't the most comfortable, but they helped me get to a point where I was barely experiencing any discomfort. I am nearly 80 years old and after having gone through several injuries and a surgery on my right leg, I was in chronic pain and often in acute pain when walking. Back surgery was recommended to me. Also, due to countless compensations, my body was very misaligned, making walking, sitting, and just about everything else very uncomfortable. I had been close to giving up the goal of staying off of a walker or being in a wheel chair. Then my personal trainer encouraged me to check out Beacon. Since working with Beacon, I am no longer in chronic pain and only experience occasional discomfort. I can walk comfortably for a reasonable amount of time (30-60 minutes) and my functional scoliosis is nearly totally straightened out. Back surgery is completely off the table. Charlie and his staff are A+. I have had many surgeries (4 shoulder, 1 elbow, 3 groin) and have seen countless PTs over hundreds of sessions. Charlie is by far the best that I have ever worked with. I've struggled for over a decade with a severely stiff back, an unstable SI joint, and chronic pain up and down the right side of my body. I've seen half a dozen physical therapists plus various chiropractors, rolf practitioners and acupuncturists. I've seen both Charlie and Lauren at Beacon, and they are hands down the best. They are masters of their craft and have been absolutely game-changing in my healing journey, always working on the broader systemic issues rather than treating just the area that is presenting with pain. Bottom line: glowing 5 star review. I was originally recommended to see Charles by a friend's wife who is a physical therapist. His schedule is pretty tight, so I made an appointment with Allison instead. I have been unable to run due to knee pain for about 3 years, following running half-marathon. Allison changed all of that - she spent time taking my history a really thorough physical exam, finding that my knee pain was mostly really related to ankle and calf issues. Even after one session of manual therapy, I was feeling better and now I'm able to run again. If any business deserves 5+ stars for a review, it is this team of healthcare professionals. Beacon Physical Therapy could not be more aptly named. They gave me a beacon of hope when I felt like I would never fully recover after having rotator cuff surgery. I was in a sling/ immobilizer for 6 weeks and I felt like my shoulder would never return to full mobility. Once I saw Ali and met the team at Beacon, I knew that I was in the right hands. Everyone that I interacted with at Beacon was kind and professional. Scheduling could not have been easier. When it came to rehab and strengthening, Ali constantly assessed and reassessed what was working for me and adapted my exercises based on my progression. I'm so impressed with her professionalism- I can honestly say that she never gave less than 100%, every single session. Not only is my mobility where it was pre surgery, I feel like I have a greater awareness and understanding of body mechanics thanks to Ali. Charlie and Lauren are lifesavers. They've vastly improved my quality of life and given me my passion back - soccer. I was dealing with a lot of hip / sacroiliac / knee / ankle issues and had to cease all physical activity for over a year. Other physical therapists and orthopedic physicians had no idea how to fix me and I fearfully considered surgery as a possible solution. I'm so glad I didn't go through with it. Coming in for my first session, even with all my doubts and jadedness, I knew I was in good hands 10 minutes into my assessment session. Charlie and Lauren are masters of their craft and blew me away with their expertise, professionalism, and human approach to manual physical therapy. They explain their thought process thoroughly, LISTEN when you tell them how you hurt, and create a plan to get you back on track. I can't say enough good things about them. Allison has been a breath of fresh air!! I have worked with PT for over 40 years from sports, injuries, rehab of knees surgeries, ankles, hips replacements, muscle tears, bone breaks etc. Ali is a certified functional manual therapist (CFMT) and it was the first time to have someone work with me that helped me sync my muscles in my motion. I now work out and engage my core on every routine. So many things have been updated from no more heel-toe motion when walking to changes in posture. The best part was Ali is hands-on and engages with you. No assistants or modalities, you get 1 hour of her time. Her committment to her profession is evident by her extensive list of training/certifications, her sincerity is evident through her listening skills and active engagement, her passion for helping you overcome your ailment(s) is her overwhelming interest in determing what is truly going on even to the point of helping me with my car seat. She answered all of my questions even when I was questioning her statements, she never was condescending or tired of my challenges. I am well read on the topic of kinesiology and follow Kelly Starlet (The Supple Leopard) et al always learning and challenging, so Ali had her hands full. Ali always handled my challenges better then a press secretary! Above all, she became a friend and person that I could count on no matter what. I know that I have someone I can trust and believe in. My PT recommended I see Charles King after unsuccessfully reducing my hip bursitis pain. I was so very impressed with Dr. Allison Massopust! When I came in for my first visit to try and get some solutions to my back pain, she really took the time to listen as I described my physical issues. I was struck by her empathy and attention to detail. Then right away she armed me with exercises and strategies I could use at home to stretch my sore back. She demonstrated how to do the moves properly, and even filmed me on my phone while I practiced them, in order to help me do them right at home. Later I received an email with more detail on how to strength train and work on alignment. So much dedication to a new patient, and such a kind and detailed message... Charlie says he's a physical therapist, but I'm pretty sure that's just a disguise so that he can move freely in society. He's actually a wizard. I was hit by a car while biking to work in October 2014. When I went to my doctor about my injury, I was told to wait it out, since "it might get better on its own." Well, it didn't, so after two months of pain and reduced activity, I asked my friends for physical therapy recommendations. One of my friends, herself a physical therapist, recommended Charlie. She said he saved her from another hip surgery. She raved about him. And she was right. 1) Charlie is incredibly kind, humble, and approachable, and he bends over backwards to make sure you are aware of and comfortable with what's going on. In the simplest terms, he is a good person. 2) Charlie is amazing at what he does. There's a reason he's the physical therapists' physical therapist. In our very first appointment, he was able to quickly assess what was going on with my body, and do a few quick adjustments/magic tricks that immediately brought me pain relief, increased flexibility, and increased strength. That's obviously a case-by-case thing, but after months of being demoralized by my injuries and dismissed by my doctor, it felt like a miracle that Charlie listened to me, listened to my body, and got to the bottom of things on our first session. I wasn't completely fixed after one session, but a few weeks with Charlie got me to a point where I felt comfortable following through with my plans to fulfill my dream of cycling up to the summit of Haleakala. I've been seeing him for a while now as we work to get my body back to pre-collision levels (and expand to treat some preexisting issues), and I look forward to every session, both because of the quality of the treatment, and also because I just enjoy Charlie's company. read more

I absolutely love Beacon Physical Therapy. My PT moved away and she highly recommended Charles. He totally lived up to her recommendation. I have made significant improvements under Charles care, getting stronger and being able to do things I have not been able to in 4 years. In the past 4 months, I've had 24 sessions and both staff members that manage the front desk have been incredibly helpful, sweet and welcoming. Speaking of, I have to bring up a negative review I read from April about them. It totally perplexed me that someone would have anything negative to say about them. This place is phenomenal. I am a dancer and suffered from plantar fasciitis which wouldn't heal--- until I was referred to Charlie. In one treatment, my foot felt much better. He has a massage/chiropractic technique that addresses the issues that were going on with my foot. He was a dancer himself and knew how important it was for me to dance. He is sensitive and understanding and is expert in the muscular/skeletal system like no other. After seeing countless podiatrists with no success, I now understand how I got this dread foot problem and how to heal it. Genius with a kind heart. I had been suffering from horrible leg and foot pain from CRPS or RSD (I hope everyone who suffers from this finds this review). All the literature and every MD give patients a bleak prognosis. Not Charlie. Why? Because he understands intricacies and mechanisms between joints, tissues, bones, muscles, and nerves. Orthotics? Check. Tape? Check. Manual hands on therapy? Check. Compression stocking? Check. He uses all and every modality. All PTs know the same thing, right? Wrong. I had been to half a dozen PTs. All of them had me do calf raises in the corner or exercises on a Pilates mat or with bands. Stuff you could view on YouTube. You can imagine my results. I did my assessment with Charlie using a scoring tool today. We were both so thrilled. I improved my pain and function by at least 40% (probably more but my math is poor) over just a few months. I am walking better, feeling better, and most importantly, I have confidence my leg and foot will return to baseline. Normal. If you're suffering from chronic pain and have been told you just have to live with it, you MUST see Charlie. The guy is smart, professional, pleasant, accessible, and experienced. read more

I started seeing Lauren in January to get treatment for shin splints (been dealing with them on and off since 2011). I run a lot, and it's frustrating when I can't train the way I want to because of the pain and inflammation. I'd tried all sorts of self-massage techniques and ice on my own, but nothing seemed to be fixing the root cause. When I first met with Lauren, she did some assessment of my biomechanics and started a bit of treatment. I already noticed a difference after one session. I continued seeing Lauren as I was ramping up mileage for a half marathon, and despite that, my shins felt better than they had in a long time. Lauren has helped pinpoint some areas that I didn't even know I needed to work on, and she's also helped me treat alignment issues that I was kind of aware of, but had no idea how to correct them. Oh, and Lauren is also a super intense marathon runner, and it's great to get training advice to top it all off. read more

Just as Angelica Skyler (of Hamilton fame) "knows her sister like she knows her own mind," so it is with Allison M and the human body. I have chronic neck pain, but because of my work with Allison, I feel more in the driver's seat with my pain, instead of being at its mercy. Allison taught me lots of strengthening and stretching routines to manage the pain. She is extremely patient and has a kind, useful way of explaining things. She has a great eye for proper form. Between Allison's manual adjustments to my neck and the exercises she taught me, I would always have greater flexibility and less pain at the end of the session. The results are exciting and tangible. Plus, after enough sessions, I got the hang of things, and I can do the stretches/exercises on my own. I was recommended to Beacon by a friend after seeing multiple other physical therapists and treatment professionals for a repetitive strain injury (RSI) that started in my wrist and spread to my whole forearm. I've been seeing Charles now for the past 3 months, and words can't describe how positive of an impact he has made on my life. I'm a physical therapist and a competitive amateur cyclist. I was sidelined from the sport I loved most, to a plaguing knee injury. I tried several different treatment options, with some benefits, but an ongoing pain that kept me from riding the way I really wanted to. It was starting to affect me more than physically- mentally and emotionally. I had made up my mind that I was just going to have to grit my teeth and ride through the pain, as not racing my bike wasn't going to be an option.
