This is our current and most favorite vet in the 30 years we've lived here. We like the staff and Dr. Johansson but most importantly "Coco" our mini- Australian Shepherd and our cat "Kitty" actually are chill with them. I really enjoyed my experience at this clinic. My dog buddy always has issues with getting his nails clipped and most of the local groomers were unable to get all of his nails done without tramitizeing my dog even further . All the staff at beacon were extremely professional and took the time to get to know my dog and we're able to clip all of his nails without incident. It had been a year since the last time I took my dog to this clinic. The parking lot was empty, save for employee parking. Last year, I did not see the doctor at first, but a vet tech who tried to sell me a lot of stuff that neither Missy or I needed. I remember feeling offended and a bit impersonalized about that.. When I began takingMissy this veterinarian Gunther five years ago, he handled my case himself. Missy was always eager to see him. He was thorough , got Missy to trust him, gave Missy her shots in front of me, and took her in back for a blood test. He did marvelous work when she injured her back. The doctor is a personable man, great with animals. A truly gifted person he is, blessed. That is where this ends. This time, Missy hesitated before she came into the office. I had been going through an extremely stressful week as well, and I suppose I should have thought this over before committing to doing this again.. habit, I suppose. The assistant came in and this time I confronted her by asking her position She stated that she is a vet tech. I asked her when I could see the doctor. She said the he will be right in , but she was going to ask me a few questions first. ( In the past, there was a small black board on the wall of the examining room, and the owner of the animal would write on the board the particulars.. very nice..I liked it.) But.. like I write above, last year it became different. The "vet tech" would try to sell me this product ir that, and used sly if not covert ways to bring about that sale. This time, the vet tech asked me if Missy was still on meds for kennel cough and would I care to continue them. Missy never had kennel cough....ever! When I told her this and asked her where she obtained that information, she stated that perhaps she looked at the wrong file. The place is empty!! How can you get that wrong?. She had placed two treats on the floor that Missy used to love to take from Dr. Gunther's hand. Missy did not recognize them at all. I began to get dark inside.. I wanted to leave. I should have right then and there. I told her that I would like to leave now. She began to pummel me with questions about heart worm treatment and a test and what I feed Missy and if she has problems with arthritis, etc. I stated to her that isn't that what the doctor is supposed to do.. examen my dog? And yes I want heart worm test please. She continued with flea treatment and I said yes I want that and she asked me when the last time I gave Missy a heart worm pill and I said last fall. I was becoming frustrated with this animated robot holding a pad and paper in front if me, seeking a way to make me crazy. And she found it. She took Missy in back. Shortly after that I heard Missy scream like she never screamed before in all of the time I had owned that dog except for the time she had hurt her back. That was it. I opened that door and demanded my dog back. I was having none this any more. I envisioned this woman in back putting a needle into Missy at the same area of the back injury with no consideration of her case history. After all, where is her file? The woman in back stated that all beagles scream like that from a rabies shot. Liar. This dog had never screamed like that and it was done in front of me.. except for last year. The woman from in back made hand motion in front of me that I am crazy. Yes , indeed I am crazy when I want my dog back after I hear that kind of screaming and I can't even witness what she did. The situation intensified to the point that I wanted to take it outside with that woman: My point is, do not trust these vet techs. The parking lot is empty for a reason. Try Swannanoa Valley Animal Hospital instead. The veterinarian at Beacon is good, but obviously you mist he royalty to see him any more. read more

We've been with Beacon since we moved to the area and honestly after This morning I cannot recommend them to anyone anymore. I worked in veterinary offices for two years and never experienced something like this. My dog is 14 years old and lives with my parents and myself and boyfriend. After a hard fought battle we had to make the decision to put her down this morning, upon calling we were told that all of us would not be able to be present with her because they couldn't have us all in the room, not because of Covid restrictions, just because in general they do not allow more than two people in the room. I've never been more heartbroken to have to make the decision with my pet, but to not even be present is a stab in the heart. We will not be returning and I cannot recommend this vet to anyone. read more

My little dog Kallie had her physical yesterday, and I told Beacon Veterinary staff she just recently began trying to urinate more, even right after emptying her bladder. Beacon called me when her labs were done, and she has a uti. I just picked up her medication for the uti. Beacon staff very friendly and genuinely care about their animal patients. I highly recommend Beacon Animal Hospital to be your pet's healthcare guardians. read more

Exceptional care. We were visiting from out of town and our dog injured her tail while hiking. We got a same day appointment scheduled by their lovely receptionist. The office is in a great location with parking, the office is clean, Audria (Vet Tech) helped take care of our dog and was so loving and thoughtful and sharp. The vet (Dr. Johansson) was great, thorough, and cost conscious. Inside the examination room there was a chalk board welcoming our dog and family and offering us to write up questions or concerns. Overall excellent experience. Hope we don't have to go back for the dog's sake, but it's a great place and if we ever needed vet care again near here it would be our top choice. They also have a 24h emergency location on Brevard if needed. read more

OK. I have never written a negative review previously but I am compelled to make this my inaugural one: Long time client of this vet (almost 3 years) and have 3 dogs. They offer a points program where, over time, you can accumulate points then exchange them for services. I had earned over 4500 points which I could apply to office visits, tests, etc. Brought 2 of 3 dogs in for routine blood & urine collection. This required 2 people to control restless older dogs during the middle of the day. Nurse took blood from both and urine from one. Gave me a kit to collect urine on the 2nd one. Went to the counter to claim my "free" office visits but was told that this visit was for tests and not an office visit. OK...I get it. Inadvertently left my wallet at home...thinking "free" visit. Front desk said to call with credit card info--no problem. In my mind I figured that I had to bring the urine sample in the next morning, so I will settle all charges then. When I returned the next morning to pay and deliver the urine sample, the nurse casually informed me that they threw the blood samples in the garbage because I had not paid by 6pm the previous day...WHAT? Then she had the nerve to say "so when do you want to bring them in again for another blood draw?" THREW THE BLOOD SAMPLES IN THE GARBAGE????? Let's review: We have 3 dogs, been a paying customer for 3 years (probably paid thousands of dollars to them), never had an issue before...and they threw the blood samples away without ever informing me that if payment was not received by 6pm the previous night that it was company policy to waste my time, put the dogs through another unnecessary procedure, disregard my stellar payment record, and essentially tell me to take my business elsewhere. So I did. When a business treats their patients/customers with this callous of an attitude, they merit a poor review for their poor business practices and poor consideration of the the dogs. read more

My dog Turnip is a 60 pound, thrashing, distrustful, scaredy cat lunkhead. I love him dearly, but he is a tough patient at the vet. It's hard for the sweetest of nurses and most patient of vets to get near him- and he loves treats and affection. At our vet of 6 years we had established(after numerous attempts and maneuvers over the years) that the most efficient way to get samples or injections was for my partner or myself to hold him firmly on the ground spoon style. It always worked. That vet has recently adopted a Fear Free program- which means that "forceful restraint" is avoided at all costs and heavy sedatives are preferred. Turnip would get so adrenaline fueled that his system overrode every sedative that he was given. Fear Free may work for other dogs, but it doesnt work for us. Jiu jitsu does! Beacons entire staff was calm, communicative and worked with our needs, let us help them by restraining him and earned his trust. Turnip let every one of them pet him, feed him and touch him with very little fuss. It was a fantastic experience and his tail wagged all the way home. read more

GREAT PLACE, AWESOME PEOPLE. I cannot say enough good things about Beacon Veterinary Hospital. We have brought *many* cats to Beacon over the past several years, and the doctors, techs, and all the staff have always been wonderful. One of our cats has urinary crystals and chronic UTIs, and the folks at Beacon have guided us to long-term solutions that have helped prevent further infections. Another of our cats has chronic bowel obstructions (megacolon) and is has early stage renal disease. Again, Beacon is helping us identify long-term solutions to help him live out his senior years with a higher quality of life. Most recently, they have taken exceptional care of a semi-feral community cat we are caring for and socializing until we can find her a forever home. Rather than restraining her unnecessarily and causing her to regress, they used the least interference, and she did not fight them.
