I love bringing out of state guests to Bear Creek Winery in Homer. Their grounds are absolutely beautiful, I love all the flowers in bloom during the summer. The wine is also excellent, so many different varieties for fruit wine can make anyone into a lush. The staff is attentive, quick to serve and helpful. They're also just fun to be around in general. A winery in Alaska?! You heard right... this beer forward state actually has a winery too! I like to wine taste in every state and country I visit so this gem was on the list during my Alaska trip. The wines here are all on the sweeter side (I am not a fan of sweet wines) but they did have a few options that even my palate enjoyed to sample though not enough to buy a bottle of... though you may find it to your liking! A fun fact about the Homer Bear Creek Winery is that most of the wine is not produced from grapes but from various local berries. Overall, it was a fun and different experience with a friendly and informative staff member who made the tasting experience quite enjoyable while browsing the trinkets in the gift shop/tasting room. The property also hosts an inn and has a cozy cabin vibe. If going for just the wine tasting I'd say an hour is plenty for a fun thing to do in Homer. read more

Color me surprised to find a wine tasting room in Alaska! Obviously, we had to go. Half the wines available were wine based fruit blends, and the other half were exclusively fruit fermented wines. I liked the carmenere, which was a special pour the day of our visit, and I brought home a half bottle of the rhubarb wine as a novelty memento. Those were the two driest wines. Everything else was far too sweet and syrupy for me. The staff were all friendly, plus it's only a $5 tasting fee for up to 10 wines, so low stakes for a fun thing to do in Homer. read more

My review is for the lodging here. I spent Thursday - Sunday here recently in the Bay View Apartment. IT WAS FANTASTIC! I don't know when I've been so happy with a lodging experience! They have three different separate places to stay - the Bay View Apartment which sleeps up to 6, the Arctic and the Cowboy Suites. We stayed at the Bay View and the views were SPECTACULAR! It has 5 large windows that overlook the bay and the private, wrap-around deck. This unit includes a full kitchen with all plates, cups, utensils, pots and pans necessary. There was also some things like Pam and coffee and other sundries that made it feel homey. A VERY nice, clean, gas grill is on the private deck. It has a large, round table that seats 8 people (perfect for game night too). There is a main bedroom with a king-size bed and tv, and a bedroom with a queen bed (this was mine and it was comfortable, nice, clean sheets and great pillows), and the third bedroom has 2 twin beds. There is one bathroom with the sinks separated from the toilet/shower. Perhaps the only flaw here is one toilet for a lot of people (even a half-bath with toilet/sink would be sufficient). The bathtub has shampoo, body wash, and conditioner by the pump inside. There were plenty of towels, tp, and even little things like makeup remover pads. There are plenty of hooks around for hanging your towels, swimsuits, etc. The location has amazing gardens with walkways that are lovely. The waterfall and Koi pond are also fabulous! There is also another deck (below our private one) that has plenty of seating and tables if you want to party. There is a stone hot tub (which was SO amazing) and a fire pit. They have a firewood shed near the pit that has everything inside that you need to make your fire (matches, fluid, paper, wood). It was nice that there wasn't an annoying lack of micromanaging here - you are expected to do the right thing and play nice with others. While there the song of the songbirds was like waking up in a fairytale - at night when we used the fire pit, an owl serenaded us. This location is to die for! The staff was very accommodating and helpful and they were eager to get us anything we needed (like a cheese grater). They have DirecTv, but no DVD player or streaming. The reservation comes with the opportunity to go to the daily wine tastings and 10% off on wine purchases. We were so booked, we were unable to do that, but a bottle of wine was included on the kitchen island with chocolate to go with it (and both were delicious) and I will definitely try the wine tasting next time. I love this little winery! It's right in the center of Homer and even has a little walking garden outside. They offer flights for $5 that allow you to try up to eight different flavors of wine. All of the wine is made from local berries so most of the wines are on the sweeter side but that's the type I prefer so I was fine with it. I liked most of the wines but LOVED their seasonal peach apricot. I'm not a white wine person but this was perfectly refreshing. If you purchase the flight for $5, they take that off of your wine bottle purchase. All of the bottles are $20 from what I remember so you'd pay $15 a bottle if you sample them first! Worth it, in my opinion. These bottles are corks as well so be sure you pick up a corkscrew and stopper on your way out! read more

Since we planned our trip to Alaska in March 2019 we have been looking forward to our stay at Bear Creek (September 2019). This place did not disappoint. As you arrive you see your name posted on the exterior of the tasting room. What a nice warm welcome. We were greeted personally by the kindest and funniest lady. She chatted with us for a long time. While of course letting is sample the wines as we chatted. They had also made halibut cheese crackers for us while we tasted. Those were delicious. We sampled 8 wines and more since we shared sips, in between samples we laughed a lot with the loveliest lady and owner. After the tasting we were led to our room and were given a tour of the grounds. That walk alone was beautiful. The gardens and patio are just a beautiful oasis. She also let us know that there are plastic wine cups for us to use in our room when we enjoy the stone hot tub. And of course we did enjoy that! Our room was the Artic Room. We had a gas bbq to cook our dinner, a lovely kitchen which included popcorn and a complimentary bottle of their wine. We were informed that we have robes in the closet too. Btw they are fleece and so comfortable. We had ordered the extra 5 half litres of wine both packages dry and sweet (10 bottles all together) for 99$ a piece. They were beautifully displayed for us in our room with complimentary wine glasses to take home and chocolate from Alaska. We enjoyed the hot tub and wine. Bbq our dinner that we purchased previously. The bed was very comfortable and we both slept well. The shampoo and conditioner in the shower smelled so good. This is a must stop. A winery in Alaska you can't go wrong and you won't. Most amazing wines and beautiful rooms with a magnificent view. read more

I planned a memorable weekend for my mom at Bear Creek and it was perfect. We rented out the Bay View Lodge apartment because our family is huge and we comfortable fit all 7 of us in there (one person slept on the couch). The view from the lodge is gorgeous and on a clear day you have a beautiful view of the mountains and a glacier. The apartment had 3 bedrooms and a fully stocked kitchen so we didn't have to worry about bringing utensils, grilling, or baking supplies. There was also plenty of soap, towels, and everything else you can think of that you might need for a weekend away including the softest fluffy robes you can think of. The stone hot tub was a fantastic end to the day. Renting the bay view lodge came with a bottle of wine, chocolate, and some snacks. We also got free wine tasting at the winery next door. As someone who has done wine tasting all over the US I have to say that the Alaskan Berry wines are unique, not exactly my favorite, but it was interesting to taste the various wines. I ended up purchasing a small bottle of port that fit nicely into my bag when traveling back home to Minnesota. Throughout the process of renting/reserving the cabin and wine tasting, the staff were very friendly and nice. It's a short drive down to the Spit and it makes for a great weekend getaway. They do offer discounts for Alaskan Residents and military. My only complaint is that they don't have anywhere to sit at the winery, everyone has to stand at the counter. read more

Bear Creek Winery is always a priority stop for my wife and I whenever we are in Homer. There is a lot to enjoy at their location outside of their delicious wine tasting: take a walk through the lovely gardens to see where many of the berries come from and pause by the pond to be mesmerized by the Koi Fish; take a moment to overlook the water and the mountains at the end of the parking lot which is framed by trees making you feel as if there is no human life between you and such a majestic view; if you're staying overnight in Homer, Bear Creek offers comfortable lodging including the use of a hot tub on the main deck- and yes, you can enjoy a glass of wine while you soak... or more if you so choose. The staff at Bear Creek are absolutely delightful and knowledgeable about both Bear Creek and Glacier Bear lines of wine. Even if you're not normally a wine kind of person, you will be able to find something that you love here. My wife and I recently went to a tasting on our honeymoon in October where we were able to enjoy a new experience of staff demonstrating combinations of various wines to create a completely new taste. The combination of flavors exploded on our taste buds as though the liquid in our glasses had come straight from the heavens. Went to dinner at Fresh Catch Cafe and had a tremendous meal. Stumbled upon the Bear Creek Winery products while there which we really enjoyed. So, the next day (8-25-21) we decided to visit the winery to buy some wine and visit the place. Upon pulling into the grounds we were quite impressed. All the pretty flowers and a garden which was well tended and a very cute porch. It really was a pretty place in an awesome area. Then we entered the facility and it all went down hill from there. The "lady" working today was a younger female wearing a green shirt and had a tattooed right arm. She is exactly everything that is wrong with the service industry today. Rude, unkind, aloof, and just basically a waste of space. When you walk into a place expecting to spend several hundred dollars and leave empty handed that speaks volume about the joint. The owners of Bear Creek need to get a handle on who is representing their brand because this individual working today can sink your operation in a New York minute. And it was not just us who thought this. We met at lady at the counter who asked a few questions about the product and was treated like absolute crap. Great wine and AWFUL service here! read more

A winery in Alaska...whhhaatt! This place is super cool. Came here on our last trip to Homer and it was definitely on the list of places to go back to on this trip. Tasting is only 5 dollars for 6-8 pours and if you buy a bottle the money goes towards the purchase, what a great deal! They have some amazing fruit wine flavors, ranging from drier to sweeter. I personally like the ones on the sweeter end. Lots of selection that all sound really good so it can be hard to choose which ones to try. Pomegranate was a group favorite, as was the blueberry. They also have some seasonal flavors as well. The kiwi pear won me over and that is the one we walked away with. If it's still there when you check this place out and you like sweet, definitely give that one a try! Staff was really friendly and knowledgeable. One of my favorite places in Homer. I always make sure to stop by for a tasting whenever I'm in town. They have a large selection of unique wines. Most of them are distilled from local berries, my favorites are the raspberry and their port, which is delightful with dark chocolate. This is a great place to spend an afternoon or weekend. They have a beautiful yard with an unusual four-person swing that goes in a circle. They also have two sets of horseshoe pits and beautiful gardens with flowers and rhubarb. read more

One of Homer's best kept little secrets - a full winery up on the hillside right outside of town! Complete with a bed and breakfast, tours and the best fruit and berry wines I've ever tasted. This is a real treat for anyone! Definitely try the Shirzzberry, my favorite, which goes well with anything spicy! It's a dry wine, but there are many medium to quite sweet wines, too. There is one that's like drinking dark chocolate - sinfully good Alaska Port. I honestly get the names confused, but I've yet to taste one I didn't like - all are very, very good. I understand the wines are winning all kinds of awards now, but it doesn't surprise me. This winery served several wines at the 2010 Hoka Hey Challenge motorcycle race party, and I fell in love with one made special for that summer, I believe. It was made of pear and I think, raspberry. Not entirely sure, because it went down so smoothly, so deliciously, that after my third glass, my memory definitely got a little blurry! The wine, in lovely dark blue glass bottles, is for sale in stores around Homer but I'm not sure if it can be mail-ordered due to puritanical alcohol laws but if you are going to the Kenai Peninsula, make it on down to the end of the road at Homer and be sure to book your stay at this truly romantic and friendly place where you can enjoy the views of stunning Kachemak Bay and the Kenai Mountains, but best of all .... to taste the delicious wines, made only in Alaska! read more

I feel sad to give only 3 stars but it's due to the wine. Although, there are numerous varieties to try, I felt I was tasting flavored sugar water. The staff that did our tasting was great! Friendly, and generous with her offering of more tastes than we purchased. The gift shop was impressive and that's where we spent our money. Staying in Homer in late September does not have many shopping experiences so this gift shop helped us find souvenirs of higher quality. The place is located off the beaten path so pleasant. Absolutely fantastic all across the board, this was a refreshing and fantastic experience, especially after the rude service we had received earlier in the day from another business in homer. Appearance: The winery is set out away from the main area of Homer, sort of a cozy in the woods feel going on here. The buildings are gorgeous they appear to be wooden cabins with gorgeous carvings all over the place, the adorable bear server by the door was adorable. The inside is very clean and they will show you the back, where the old tasting room we were told was, now I assume an area to process the wine? I could be wrong. The tasting area now, is in front and set up at a long wooden bar table with the wines on display behind. Service: The service was spectacular, we had a young woman helping us who was very knowledgeable in the wines and explaining the process, ingredients, etc. She was on top and very quick, considering they were pretty busy while we were there. Wine: The wine was good, I particularly liked that they went astray from the atypical wine (from grapes) and used other products from Alaska to ferment their own, other fruit produced, wines. I brought four bottles back home, three for myself and one for my neighbor. Most of the wines I tasted were on the drier side but all would pair well with different meals, there were two with exceptions, they were fuller, a heavier bodied wine and I especially enjoyed the pomegranate wine. Being from Oregon, which has a lot of wineries I did enjoy this experience and appreciated the quality, time and craftsman ship that had gone into these wines, far beyond sub par, and better than other wine states that I have been to. read more

Definitely a 4.5 star review. This place was awesome. The only thing keeping it from being a 5-star review is that I'm not a super fan of berry wine. It's a bit to sweet for me. BUT, A) not being a fan I still really enjoyed their wines and B) if you do like these types of wines: LOOK NO FURTHER! It only makes sense that this place clearly takes pride in their craft. If Homer (and Alaska in general) don't mess around when it comes to crafting their beer, then it only stands to reason that they'd be on point when making their wine. I funny thing I realized when here is that Alaska doesn't have grapes, so they import the juice and mix it with their local fruits and berries to create the wine. If you live in California, then you probably have a vineyard in your back yard. Any shmuck in CA can make wine. If you're in Alaska, then you better be sure you know what you're doing and be passionate about putting out a quality product. They do exactly that at this winery. Also, the amazing views while traveling up the hillside are free - included with your visit to their location just outside of town. Chances are you'll want to stop and take a couple pictures of the spit, the bay, and the mountains either going there or on your way back. read more

Very cool and very fun. They say they are the last winery on Alaska. Definitely a good reason to come and support these guys. Sadly they can't make a lot of berries in Alaska for obvious reasons but they do mix their wine with local berries, very cool. The wine tasting is a lot of fun. They have a bunch of wines to try from and they let you try up to eight...but who is really counting. Haha. If you are a dry red wine drinker this place may be a little limited. Most of their wines are pretty sweet, including their dry selection, but still not bad at all. Their wines are super tasty and the bottle has the Alaska name on it. A trip to Homer isn't a trip until you swing to the Bear Creek and sample their fantastic wines (a sampling which, by the way, is FREE!) I know people may be turned off by the price. It's worth it. I know it might be weird to outsource grapes, but where do you see any grapes being grown in Alaska? (By the way, every other winery or do-it-yourself-brew place outsources!) The staff is incredibly helpful and indulging. They really seem to enjoy what they're doing, and are more than willing to accommodate your requests. The last time I went, I ended up getting way too drunk off sampling 14 different wines, and I think I hit on the guy who was pouring. Sorry if you read this, dude! I went to a wine tasting some months ago in Anchorage, and ended up chatting with one of the owners. Super nice guy, not to mention his business makes incredibly great wines. I always seem to have at least one or two bottles of BC in my cabinet. I highly recommend it to all of my friends. BC creates amazing blends, superb combinations, and adds a great Alaskan flair to wine by incorporating local fruits. I hear they've been able to expand, so they'll be able to make even more delicious wine. There's one thing I know that Alaskans do right, and that's our alcohol. read more

Oh. My. God. I have always thought that wine was proof that Jesus loves us, and wants us to be happy. Bear Creek Winery has given me reason to doubt. We saw a little advertisement for it at Captain Patti's; my bf's immediate intuition was, "Oh, this cannot be good." But we decided to give it a try anyway. The overview: I don't know what they're serving there, but it's not wine. And it shouldn't be called wine. Yes, there are grapes involved (sourced from places that get sun, and shipped up), but then other things are mixed in, like blueberries and raspberries and cherries. This has the effect of creating a mixture that is 1) not palatable and 2) not wine. At best, the result is a fermented fruit-based beverage. The woman who was doing most of the pouring was CRAZY. I mean, like batshit insane. She was exactly the type of person who I would have expected to be pouring fermented fruit-based beverage in a tiny town in Alaska. She referred to the wine as "kool-aid for grownups," and I couldn't agree more. In the way that cheap grain alcohol mixed with kool aid packets is "kool-aid for grownups." She gave us little slips with the names of the offerings on them and little pencils so that we could make tasting notes. Here's a sample of mine: "Shirazzberry" - corn syrup, with notes of flat grape soda "Blueberry Mirlo" - faintly rotted blueberry pie filling; hint of grain alcohol on the finish "Blu Zin" - cough syrup with notes of blue-flavor kool-aid; vague hint of grapes "Gooseberry" - white grape juice, with extra sugar added; notes of rubbing alcohol on the finish Alternatively, I could have just written "sugar" for all of them, because that's all any of them tasted like. Clearly a lot of people were enjoying it (some people next to us even bought a case), but I would argue that these are probably not people who enjoy actual wine with flavors other than sugar/soda/corn syrup in them. So, if you don't like wine but you like really sweet, really overpowering fruit drinks with booze in them, go! You might actually enjoy it. If you like tasting wine, stay away. read more

This is a MUST stop in Homer. While they have some drier varieties, most of their wines are on the sweeter side and those are my favorites. The staff is very friendly and happy to help and answer questions. When you first arrive, you pay $5 per person to sample up to 6 different wines. There are plates of romano cheese to help clear your palette between tastings. Then when you make a purchase, that $5 gets refunded off the cost of the bottle(s). 5 STARS for the OWNER, suites, and place. Not the biggest fan of the vino itself. We went here a couple of times during our trip, b/c our friends worked here and were getting married here. THE SUITES: I popped in the room for the bride's day and that was quite awesome. Very cute area. THE AMBIANCE: The location is amazing with the views overlooking the hills, an awesome swing in the middle of the grassy area, and ponds and cute patios. The tasting room is very cute with fun stuff to purchase. THE WINE: Being from CA, I can be a wine snob. I was surprised when I was introduced to the wine going from sweet to sweeter as you go. Huh?! They were mostly (if not all) made from non-grapes, so in a sense they were not wines at all. So that made me feel better. I truly wanted to like the wines, but my friend even started to giggle b/c she knew I wasn't liking them as we kept going. Bottom Line - Don't expect Napa or Sonoma grape wines here. And throughout AK, you will see tehir wines. They're OK, I'm not hating, but just not a fan myself. read more

Stopped in to Bear Creek Winery on a recent trip to Homer. What a cute little place! There is a lovely store with all kinds of fun trinkets and souvenirs. As an added bonus, a tasting was only $5! My mom, dad, and I all opted to taste some wine, and it was great! There are lots of options to get your wine home safely if you're worried about traveling. Unfortunately we had an event to attend and weren't able to look around the gardens, but it was a fun way to spend a couple hours in the afternoon. For a mere five bucks these super-friendly folks will serve you tastes of a whole pile of wines, with guidance on what order to taste them in for maximum enjoyment. And if you get the port, they serve it with chocolate to enhance the experience. And if you end up buying some wine (which you will) you get your five bucks back! I usually don't describe wine as delicious, but it is the only adjective that came to mind while in the tasting room. $5 gets you to taste 6-8 of Bear Creek's Wines. They have about 15-20 on their list so choose well. I recommend you choose one set and your tasting partner another set, that way you get to taste as many as possible. After, the tasting if you wish, your $5 can go towards the purchase of a bottle which are reasonable priced between $14-$29. To cleanse the palette, we were offered a smoked halibut spread (their own recipe) on crackers and parmesan cheese bits. Even though they do not grow their own grapes (not possible in Alaska due to weather) the processing is all theirs - making for a unique wine. read more

Out of the way SURPRISE! A winery in HOMER Alaska. Wow, that was cool As a tourist, I thought, "How could there be a winery in a frozen land?" It is quaint with very nice people. There was five of us. I was the designated driver so I didn't have any wine. But, they had great food and other drinks. It was so comfortable, as if the workers were our long lost friends. We came here on a Saturday afternoon and they pretty busy, but very nice. They are interesting bc their wines are made from different berries and/or rhubarb, since they cannot grow grapes in Alaska. Btw, I am rating only the winery part. They have a nice shop and you can also take a tour, but t wasn't available to us at that time. Great place for a change of pace when visiting. They have a very unique selection of locally produced wines which are quite tasty and unique. I would recommend this winery to anyone who enjoys wine. My only complaint was that it was a pain to find without GPS in the rental car. read more
