I adopted a dog from HUA and he was a wonderful. My son and many friends have also adopted from…read moreHUA with great success. They take wonderful care of the animals, feeding them well, getting vet care, giving them treats and toys, and treating each one with attention and love. They are careful with adoptions so that the pet goes to a good home. The animals may have been traumatized in their previous situation and rehabilitated at HUA so their new home needs to be a good fit. Another reviewer said the website might not be up to date as far as adoptions listed. The website relies on volunteers and they might be a little behind at times of lots of adoptions. The reviewer also complains about them "soliciting sponsorships". They are not aggressive about it but you can be a "buddy" to offer some support for a dog waiting to be adopted. They will let you know when the dog is adopted and you can switch to another "buddy" or end your support at any time. They are active in surrounding communities offering low cost neuter/spay and help to pet owners who run into serious problems supporting their pets. They recently started an outreach to give care to pets of homeless veterans in Victory Village apartments in Omaha working with a Girl Scout group and veterinarian Dr Jensen.

My wife and I donated very substantially over the years and adopted from them twice. A year ago we…read moretook in a colony of 4 pregnant cats that produced a dozen kittens. We had ALL -- mothers and kittens -- spayed, neutered and given all shots plus vet care, which was a VERY substantial expense. I recently I appealed (three times) to HUA to help us find homes for four remaining cats, to save them from the coyotes that roam the neighborhood. I was told in NO uncertain terms that they would NOT accept cats. That, despite their website advertsing their cats for adoption, and their professed no-kill policy. I was trying to save these cats from death by coyote, but nothing I said, nor the years of donations, made any difference. I am more than angry. Ifeel used and betrayed. It's a shame that HUA's "humanity" apparently can be turned on and off like the hot water.

This is a wonderful place to adopt a cat. You can visit them and sit with them to get an idea of…read morewhich cat/kitten is right for you. I visited 3 times before choosing my cat. They have a thorough screening procedure for potential adopters, whichis good. The adoption center is clean and the cats all have plenty of space to sleep and play. I adopted my kitten (7 months old) from them. He came with all of his shots, neutered and they gave me a free bed, blanket, toys and even food to get him started. He had been thoroughly checked for any health issues. He was chipped and it was only a small fee to switch it to my name. I am a senior so the adoption fee was only $60. That's a great price when you consider all the shots and health check, let alone the freebies that came with him. I was extra lucky that he happened to have a fabulous cat tree that was his. They didn't realize it was part of his property until a day or so later and I would never have known but they made sure I got it. They called after about a week to make sure everything was going well. Just a great place and I also like that they are a no kill shelter. Only negative is that they have fairly limited open hours.

This place is crooked as hell. My family and I went to pick up this dog named Diamond to adopt and…read morethey told us that she was on hold and would be off hold tomorrow. So my kids got all excited and couldn't even sleep they were so excited and we were there before open the next day. The doors open and they say, "sorry she is still on hold." What? We were the last ones out of the building last night. How can that be? "The manager/director has her on hold for friends. Um, okay? Isn't that ethically incorrect?! So we got our name down to get a call first if she became available after these people if it happens to not work out. So it doesn't work out with their family dog so we get a call. The call mind you, comes to me on a Wednesday at 11:10am. Of course any normal person would be at work. I answer and the lady says the dog is available and we wanted you to know. Ok, I'm at work until 4:30. She replies, "the dog is very high in demand with a lot of people interested in her. She is too popular to be put on hold." Um? What?! So I called back 1 hour later. They said "I''m sorry, she is more than likely going to a foster family right now. They're here to take her now." WTF?! F this place. They're corrupt. We tried an entire 4 days to get this dog and the place makes up rules as they go. Hope your animal friend isn't in high demand or you're screwed. Don't tell your family either, or they'll be broken hearted! Don't waste your time.

I was in the hospital for a week and my dog got out. When they told me to come collect her I told…read morethem my situation and that I had no one else to go get her. They brushed me off and said that because no one would collect her she would be put up for adoption and that they wouldn't give me any information from then on. I've spent the last 3 months trying to find my dog but they won't even give the new owners my information. All they said is that IF she comes back in I'll be their SECOND call. They showed no sympathy for me or my situation and didn't even give me a chance to get her. I didn't even get to say goodbye. Heartless people.
