Date & caramel & salted caramel tart!
Brooke R.

I'm not really a cake person but I can't lie, walking into the little shop I was overwhelmed with excitement about the cake possibilities!!! Beatrix has different sandwiches everyday but their real stand out has to be the desserts! There's cakes, tarts, slices, all the good stuff. The strawberry shag is not to be missed. One of the best cakes I've ever eaten. I want it to be my birthday cake forever! Will defs head back in on those days I need a little sweetie to get me through the day.

The Eddie - the most amazing meatloaf

Nat provides a cosy, homely space. I had an Eddie ciabatta which was the most amazing meatloaf ... and the cakes.. OMG. I can't wait to go back!

These days I have been having loads if sandwiches and burgers because you can eat it quickly and effectively with one hand most of the time while the other can tend to the baby (aka shove him some finger food so I can get to eat my meal). So when I heard that beatrix not only does fantastic cakes but also AMAZINGLY sandwiches I am instantly hooked- I want to go there now! I grabbed Hangry Piglet and messaged Monkylicious and we were seated at Beatrix within an hr. Beatrix is tiny... For some reason I always thought it was a huge cafe laden with cakes. The menu is on the blackboard and there are specials. Monkylicious ordered Beggbie, which is like a bacon and egg burger with roasted beetroot relish. While I ordered the Just Chicken, a special on that day which is poached Milawa chicken with chicken crackling (when I ordered I said I wanted a "Just Crackling" cos all I could see in my mind are those cracklings! Lol) When the food arrived we eyed on each other's dish and had major food envy. And of course being fabulous foodies we decided to share. We did not regret sharing one bit! The Beggbie just hits the spot with the amazing gooey egg and bacon combo, while the chicken was light and yumgasmic with those salty cracklings. Of course we have to try their cakes after people raved on about it. Sadly our choc hazelnut torte tasted somewhat like soy sauce. We both thought it was pretty weird and was a bit disappointed. I also got the rhubarb cheesecake takeaway for hubby and whilst it wasn't bad, it wasn't as yummy as I imagined it would be. The rhubarb crumble had a very oily taste to it and I think that was what spoils it for me. That being said I would definitely go back for the sandwiches and give their cakes another chance. Maybe they were just having an off day?

Pistachio & Lemon Curd Layered Cake

A Yelp Talk thread a few months ago about the best vanilla slices made me want to pay a visit to Beatrix as I love a vanilla slice or snot block as I discovered some know them as. So I finally made my first visit a couple of weeks ago. Sadly no vanilla slices, instead several amazing looking cakes. After much deliberation I opted for a pistachio & lemon curd layer cake. It did not disappoint!!! The piece of cake that I was presented with was a hefty serving but thankfully being a light textured cake I was able to polish off every last morsel & it was delicious!!! Washed down with a cute pot of English Breakfast tea it made for a very pleasant way to spend a part of my day. In fact the experience was so good that I had a repeat visit within two weeks. This time a lemon chiffon cake, which was delicately flavoured & would have to be the most light & fluffy cake that I have ever experienced. The premises are small so not good for large groups & I would definitely recommend avoiding peak times as there is obviously a regular lunchtime crowd who go there for the savoury dishes that Beatrix also sell. The service was friendly & fairly efficient on both my visits. That said I prefer for my tea & cake to arrive at the same time as they do go much better together & on my second visit to Beatrix the delay between cake & tea was perhaps just a little too long. I had almost devoured my piece of cake before the tea arrived a good 5-10 minutes later. Hopefully one day there might be a vanilla slice to try but until that time I'm happy to work my way through their cake offerings!!!

I tried a week earlier but found them closed so wound up settling for The French Quarter, a somewhat lesser establishment so be sure to get here early! A cozy little bakery-cafe, I had a woderful Red Velvet cake and hot chocolate. Will be back with others to try more. They also make ciabattas with different fillings each day of the week so they're not just a cake shop. Be warned the place is small and well frequented!

Small cafe that serve the best red velvet cake in Melbourne. My usual order is just a slice of their red velvet cake and a cup of coffee latte. If I feel a little adventurous, I will go for their other cake selections that are display on the counter. They also serve other savoury items. Best time to visit on a quite weekend.

Great service. DELICIOUS food. Wayyyy too small venue. Convenient location (close to 57 tram). I have converted my friends and they will bring their mates there too. Definitely on my shortlist for brekkie/brunch venues but only for small (2-4 max) groups.

Couldn't finish it. . The best roll I have ever had.

It's a great place to spend ur peaceful morning and enjoy your coffee. The best desserts ever.

If you are in Melbourne/Australia, you should definitely give Laurent a try!!…read moreThis is one of the best, and one of my favorites Bakery/Cafe I have been to. I tried their Hot Chocolate & dessert cake, called "Monte Carlo". It's a Chocolate mousse with cafe creme & chocolate biscuit covered with milk chocolate glaze. The glaze outside was shinny, smooth, and light, which is perfect for me. Texture, creamy, but not too sweet. Dessert was great, and Hot Chocolate too. Located in the city, 5 to 7 minutes away from Flinders Street railway station by train (Melbourne, Victoria). A cute, nice, fancy French bakery/cafe in the city, nothing can be better than spend a free day with your friends/love/family at Laurent. Services and staffs are great! I didn't have to wait for long, they take good order, and give you great recommendations, and ask for your opinions after. Customers will always feel welcomed, and happy when the staffs are always smiling. Overall, great place + dessert! Try it out, if you have a chance, definitely worth it. Love and miss this place.

Pleasant surprise - they serve a pretty large latte in a bowl (like those I recall from trips to Paris) rather than the thimbles served all over the city! I also tore up a delicious lemon tart. Woohoo - good times!

Lune was absolutely worth the visit! The place is not that large but has a good amount of seating…read more The service was friendly and quick. We tried the regular croissant, almond croissant and a sugared caramelized croissant. The regular croissant was good , but honestly it was very similar to what we normally get at the South Melbourne Market. The almond croissant, however, was amazing..incredibly rich and flavorful. The caramelized one was the standout for me. It was easily the best one we tried. The texture and flavor were incredible. We arrived at just the right time and barely had a wait, but a line started forming shortly after, so timing definitely matters. Overall definitely worth trying!

The first thing I will seek out on any adventure is the quintessential coffee and croissant…read more Obviously not expecting a croissant to deliver a French baker seal of approval outside of a French bakery, but I'm not picky. Croissants are my kryptonite in any form because...butter. And buttery flaky layers will always be welcome in my food kingdom. In the other hand, Melbourne is known for being the coffee connoisseur of the world, so I was confident I would find many memorable coffee experiences on my Australian journey. Luna is tucked away in the ritziest part of the Melbourne CBD, so I found myself wondering along with the guy in line behind me who asked the quiet part out loud...'how expensive are these croissants?' Well...the French would riot at the cost of these beauties starting around $7 AUD+ (about $4.50+ in US) but the French riot at most things (which I totally appreciate btw, so no shade, my frenchie comrades) I'm going to say the price is pretty reasonable considering the cost of a plane ticket nowadays to get the real thing would be a lot more, so moving on. Also, this is a pretty average price of a croissant or pastries at most coffee shops in the states, especially considering it's located next to Chanel and Dior. The line was out the door and down the block, but moved impressively quickly. I was through the line within 5 minutes, and had my croissants and coffee within 3 minutes, then was on my way to food heaven. Now to the croissants. I think I half expected these to be over-hyped because of the bougie location and who's who status of these croissants. Literally 4 different people on my walk back to the hotel, and a girl in the elevator saw the bag and asked if I had ever tried these before. Luna is THAT girl. Luna IS the instagram influencer. Starting with the impossibly glossy exterior, then I started into the first layer. Layer by layer flaking off one by one until you start to reach the perfect buttery soft, stretchy layers inside that melt in your mouth, one by one. It was marvelous. Frenchies don't come for me, but this rivaled any croissant I had in my travels through the French countryside, (except they weren't $1.50). I sampled the ham and Gruyère croissant, the pain au chocolat, the classic croissant, and complimented it all with a white coffee. Tomorrow I'm returning to sample their lemon cruffin & famous kouing aman
