Decent place to stop and look for rocks if you're up in northern mn. Lots of different stones, little fossilized rocks and 3D bringer knick knacks. There's jewelry options too. I'd have love to have seen more into on the properties of stones. Service, hit or miss. They didn't engage with me even though I stood at the counter for minutes waiting. Beaver Bay Agate Shop in Beaver Bay, Minnesota: I stopped at this shop after a day of site seeing in the area. I travel full time and I've been to quite a few rock shops and this one was decent. It is rather small and the shop got a little crowded which made moving around and looking a little challenging. The selection was just okay in my opinion. The staff had little knowledge and couldn't answer questions - so be sure to do your own homework unless you are discussing agates or the local weather. I did find a nice Labradorite stone that I purchased. There were some really beautiful agates and a few days later I wished I would have purchased one for my collection. On July 26, 2021, on our way home from vacation, we stopped by this rock shop. I went in with my deaf friend. I had selected some items and made a purchase, and went to wait for my friend in the car. My friend came out and told me in ASL that the owner of the store had kicked her out, and she didn't know why. I went back into the store and asked the owner (non-aggressively) why did he kick out my deaf friend. He started yelling at me, telling me that she was aggressively throwing slabs of rock, then pretended to be deaf when she didn't respond to him. I told him "she wasn't pretending. She is deaf". He acted like he didn't believe me, and claimed he had 2-3 witnesses to her aggressively throwing rocks. He continued to yell at me, so I simply walked away and left. I have never known my deaf friend (of many years) to be aggressive in anything. In fact, just the opposite. When threatened, she shuts down. I told my friend what he had said. She said she had seated herself on the floor and was sorting through a box labeled "Bargins". She was putting items she wanted to purchase in one pile and discard items in another pile, as she looked through the box. Not being able to hear, the rocks make have made a clinking noise when she put them in a pile. She doesn't know if they made a noise or not, because she can't hear it. When he approached her, he poked his knee into her back, rather than to tap her on the shoulder. She told him she was deaf, but he cursed at her and told her to get the F*** out. I believe the owner is displaying a clear case of Audism, which is discrimination against her for being deaf. He interpreted the noise as her being disrespectful, when she wasn't being disrespectful. In his yelling at me, his refusal to believe she was even deaf, and his attitude, he made it sound like she was aggressively throwing rocks at people! I do not believe him, given the other evidence (yelling, knowing my friend is a timid person, and my background of knowing how the deaf are frequently discriminated against based on Audism). I did some investigating online of reviews of this shop. He has been similarly rude to others (hearing) based on other reviews I have seen online, and although he does get compliments for his knowledge of rocks, his treatment of me and my friend demonstrates poor customer service. I would not recommend anyone go into this place at all, deaf or hearing. The way he behaved and his age made me question whether or not the man had an age related dementia or Alzheimer's problem? I watched my father decline in dementia and he has outbursts like this. I think this man either needs to take training in appropriate customer service, or leave the business to his wife and children to run, and he retire. This man should not be running a store, or dealing with customers. My friend wrote a review on Google, and the man later claimed to have 10 witnesses. There weren't even 10 people in this small store. No way he could of had 10 witnesses. He made my friend cry for how he mistreated her. She had hoped to buy rocks to bring home for her children as souvenirs, but left with nothing but being belittled by a raging owner, when she did nothing wrong outside of being deaf and in his store. I wondered if the store had video footage of the supposed "aggressive throwing"? But I will warn anyone I can not to go to this store. Truly awful customer service. I don't care if he is the number one rock expert in the world, you don't treat people like that, period! Reports were made on this place. Stay away, because they apparently haven't taken the hint from other reviews, and always look to take the blame off themselves. As long as he remains there, he endangers the business. Managers are supposed to have training in appropriate customer relations, based on state law. This guy clearly doesn't care. There are other rock shops to patronize. read more

This rock shop has soooo much to look at! Prices were a little spendy but not bad. They also had some really cool 3D printed hinged critters, funny mugs, (I got my teen daughter an "agate licker" mug! since she's the rock hound! They have a museum too i guess but we didn't have time for that on our venture. Definitely worth the stop! Super nice owner and workers too! read more

If you are a lover of agates or gemstones, or simply a lover of geography, this little shop in Beaver Bay is definitely worth a stop. It's actually part store and part museum... The shop part is full of fun agates and stones, both rough, unpolished stones available for bulk purchase and polished or carved stones individually priced. There are some really cool pieces, and the one thing that is guaranteed is that most of the rocks are one of a kind items. Props to the staff, who clearly know what they're talking about and can tell you a lot about the origin and makeup of any piece you should inquire about. There's also a neat array of agate jewelry and jewelry made from other stones. I actually almost bought a necklace, even though I am not a jewelry gal... just because I thought the stones in it were so cool. (It also gave me an excellent idea for all of the little agates my husband has collected over the years.) The museum part of the shop is equally cool, with a very fascinating display of eye agates (that look like they have an eye design in them) and other really interesting geological finds. Even the outside of the store is adorned with a few large pieces of petrified stone, which are cool to look at for sure. It's just a fun stop where you might find a cool gift item or learn something for yourself. Definitely worth it. And you could stop down the road at Honey Bees for the most delicious cinnamon roll you've ever had while you're at it! read more

We've been coming to this shop regularly for 20+ years, and always enjoyed the selection of stones and nicely designed jewelry (in fact we spent almost $200 on rings and stones back in July). We stopped in on two separate occasions in September hoping to buy a few items, and both times we immediately exited the store after observing one of the employees (I believe the owner, an older man) without a mask or face shield, interacting closely with customers. It's incredibly disappointing to see the proprietor of this otherwise lovely shop so blatantly disregarding the safety and well-being of his customers, and violating MN state mandated Covid protocols. I'm sad to cross this place off my go-to places to visit on the North Shore. read more

We really enjoyed our stop here on our way up to the gunflint trail. The shop has many interesting items including loose stones, pendants, beads, finished jewelry, salt lamps, books, etc. all seemed reasonably priced. I bought a few strands of beads opalite, poppy jasper & aventurine for $8 a strand. The museum was really interesting. It's not huge but had some very cool items including fossils & interesting stones. The people working there were super friendly & helpful. They even gave us tips for our trip. If you are interested in stones & crystals as well as the history of the area I definitely recommend it as a stop. read more

Took a long weekend trip to Minnesota, and my geologist pal and I drove up to Duluth and beyond...and came upon this great shop! So full disclaimer, we are geologists, so we might enjoy this place a little more than others, but I think it's treasures would be appreciated by most. They have all types of stone and gemstone products, as well as a museum that holds some of their best rocks and minerals. If you need an intro to agates and thomsonite, you will get to see fantastic specimens here. Agates are the star of the show here - you can buy raw, tumbled, jewelery set, slices...you name it, they have agate! As well as thomsonite and Mary Ellen jasper. If you are a geologist reading this, the Mary Ellen jasper is fabulous and appears to be BIF with little digitate stromatolites. It's gorgeous. I bought a couple tumbled pieces and a pendant that had a little stromatolite in it. These are the locally-derived treasures, but they also have a good selection of non-native rocks. Mexican geodes, Brazilian amethyst, unique opal jewelry, semiprecious beads, polished fossil dishware, individual mineral specimens, polished bookends, petrified wood...a bit of everything! Their prices were pretty reasonable, from my experience. The agate jewelry was a bit pricier than I anticipated, but I'm not familiar with those. Went into the shop and bought a lapidary blade for cutting rocks. I paid $72. Okay, that was fine. After doing all the fun things on the shore, I started looking up these blades online and found them for $48. So I stopped back at the shop and asked the owner why is there such a big difference in price. He immediately became belligerent and started running down the blades online, which were exactly the same brand. He then told his son to just give me my money back. I told him I didn't want a refund, I wanted him to explain the difference. I told him I was retiring next month so I have to beware of the money I spend, but also need to know the difference in quality. The owner said "that is not MY problem." I was open to discussing the difference in blades, but the owner refused and just kept telling his son to refund. By this time, I said fine! His son look very embarrassed and tried to be customer friendly. When I was leaving, the owner said, "don't come back to me when something goes wrong." Ya like, I would if I didn't buy it there! Geeez... This guy lacks class and needs to figure out how to treat customers. He was defensive and sarcastic. He lost my business! read more

Stopped here to get the book that everyone was talking about to identify Lake Superior agates (the whole reason why we drove from Lake Geneva) and they were out! The owner (?) let me look at their copy, though, which was very hospitable. Husband really liked the museum in the back and daughter loved the florescent display. read more

Wonderful store with rocks from around the world and very knowledgeable help.

I purchased some stones from them on an on line auction. I lived too far away to inspect them myself but as they are in the stone/ lapidary business I took them at there word. I bid on and won all the lots they had listed as natural turquoise. Natural turquoise is defined by law as having no treatments and all of the stones WERE treated and worth a fraction of what I paid for them. Some of the pieces were dyed howlite and not even turquoise! I also bid on a large agate that was listed as laguna agate and it was not. It was an auction so buyer beware! I'm stuck with these pieces and I wouldn't buy another stone from them. read more

This place has a great selection of rocks and jewelry and the museum part is really cool. I always stop in when I am coming through town. The reason I gave it only 3 stars is because the staff while knowledgeable about the stones they tend to be way too chatty about everything else, and not in a good way. I stopped in there just the other day and I happened to be the only customer in there and I hurried up and left when the staff wouldn't stop talking to me about the weather and how he was going to get out his convertible and go for a drive. The other chick was knocking herself out trying to tell me what all the stones were even after I said I was just browsing. I guess I am the type of person who would like to left alone while I shop and if I have questions I will politely ask for assistance. I have been going there for many years and purchased a lot of stuff but honestly I don't think I will go back anytime soon. The chatty staff has gotten progressively worse each time I go there and it is not for me. I will spend my money at the Agate shop in Two Harbors, they leave you alone. read more
