After receiving a referral from our primary care doctor we searched all around for a speech clinic…read morefor my toddler. It took us a couple of weeks to find one without a long waitlist that could see him in a reasonable amount of time. I consider us very lucky to have been placed with Brittany at Speech and Play. It's a long drive for us but it's well worth it. She has done a fantastic job helping my toddler become confident to speak and practice sounds. He is now communicating much more clearly leading to less meltdowns and a happier kid! The Speech Therapists here truly care about children and work hard to help them practice their speech all while having fun. It has always been fun and the attitudes of the staff has always been pleasant and lighthearted. After nearly 12 months we are now at the point where we will be attending monthly instead of weekly because of how far my toddler has come in his speech development so I thought it was a good time to leave this beaming review. Without Brittany we would've been struggling for a long time to help our toddler and we are forever grateful for her efforts and skill that has resulted in his success. Thank you thank you! We will miss her when we completely wrap up his standing appointments.

MIRACLE WORKER!!!…read more After three previous speech pathologists, I was beginning to get discouraged, and questioned whether my son would ever be verbal. He was a stubborn, 5-year-old with Down Syndrome who had ZERO interest in working with speech pathologists or in learning to speak. Thankfully, I ended up speaking with another parent who had used Kelli's services for her son, and her face LIT UP when she raved about Kelli! I was told that she was the perfect blend of sweet and determined, and that she focused more on the mouth to get the child to understand HOW to make the sounds. I didn't quite understand what that meant, but was intrigued as this was an entirely different approach from our previous three... I immediately called to set up an appointment. That was two years ago, and easily one of the most important phone calls I have made in my son's development! My son ADORES Kelli! She truly has the sweetest disposition, yet she holds him to a schedule and incorporates play to get him to work. She uses visual cues to remind him where sounds generate; tools to help him understand tongue placement; exercises for lips and tongue (which can be a struggle with low tone in Down Syndrome); curative measures for bad habits already instilled; and arms parents with tools, knowledge and exercises to continue working with their child at home. She has also visited my son's school to show them how she has been working with my son to ensure they were all on the same page (!!!) Needless to say, when the staff met with Kelli, they were beyond impressed with the tricks of her trade, her rapport with the children and how invested she is in the success of her (I almost said "patients", but they aren't- they are "her kids" because she truly loves them). I cannot say enough good things about our experience with Kelli or the progress my son has made in working with her! He is able to express himself more than I ever imagined, and it makes this momma's heart swell when he hears a word and tries to repeat it on his own without any prompting. Do yourself and your child a favor, and give Kelli Eickelberg a call! Your search for the best speech pathologist is over... You will LOVE her!

Due to my daughter getting sick and having to do some makeup speech therapy sessions we were able to pretty match me to whole Parkwood team. The people here are friendly and are willing to go out of their way to help with a child's development which definitely means a lot. The effort that they put into their therapy is definitely appreciated. I should also mention that the particular speech therapist that we had was Bella Klee although she got married so I believe her last name is different now. She is a great therapist who goes out of her way to make sure things get taken care of. She is also very funny and has a collaborative approach that makes therapy feel more like a team effort rather than parent vs. therapist. Thank you everyone that Parkwood team.

I requested longer sessions, but they have very few 45 minute appointments available. It feels like they are rushing as many kids through as possible to collect as much money from insurance (and private pay families) as they can.

We were seeing Dr. Waters for my 3-year old son's speech delay and everything started out fine--he…read moretrusted her quickly and enjoyed the play-based learning. However, around the 6th session he got very frustrated during a task and threw a toy at her. No one was injured and of course throwing like that is never okay. However, her response was to abruptly end the session--she literally said, "You need to grab your purse and leave". We left quickly and without protest in shock. I left a voicemail and two emails asking if we could chat about the situation before she responded 5 days later and she showed zero empathy or vested interest in us. She said that situation is a time for parenting, not speech therapy, and she just doesn't deal with it. We started speech therapy so that he can find his words and here was an opportunity to teach and I felt we were punished for the exact thing we were seeking her help to improve. I spoke to at least 4 other speech therapists to get their opinion and all of them said they would never just end a session like that (particularly because he wasn't throwing a tantrum--it was a single act of frustration and then he looked to her for a response and because of his age) and one even said RUN from that type of provider. At that point, the trust was gone and we ended all future services.

It took us a few months to master "up" and "in". Dr Waters told us from the beginning that our daughter will speak. One of our first goals was to pronounce two syllable words correctly in a year's period of time. We were there in six months. Dr Waters incorporated innovative sensory integration technique called PROMPT into our sessions and saw us 2-3 times per week. Now, two years later, my daughter utters 3-5-4 word sentences like "Mama how was your day?" and "what is this?". She even said lately "mama called and doctor said no monkey in the bed". Her speech and language continue to rapidly improve. Dr Waters is effective and passionate about what she does, always available to talk to, and truly cares about her patients. She goes well beyond your typical medical practice in presenting your child's case to the insurance, providing you with first class care and helping your child to develop its true potential. Very talented and dedicated therapist and a wonderful person.

During our experience, school administration provided inaccurate or misleading information during the enrollment process. This included representations about the gender composition of incoming classes and the grade levels typically offered. Although the school is listed as serving K-8, enrollment has not historically supported consistent offerings across the upper grades. The school also lacks adequate training, policies, and structural support for a diversity of learners. Families whose children require accommodations or flexibility--including those supported by physician documentation--may find that exceptions to stated policies are not respected, even when based on medical need. Overall, the gap between how the school presents itself and the day-to-day reality was significant. In our experience, this environment was far less supportive and far more rigid than local public school options, including Portland Public Schools.

I can't say enough good things about the teachers, staff and families that make up the CLASS community. The small, age-blended classes allow the teachers and staff to truly understand and cater to the needs of each student. More importantly, the teachers and staff truly care about each student and are highly dedicated to their success. I'm truly amazed at the job they have done fostering our son's emotional and academic development. They've helped instill a sense of confidence in him that I never thought would be possible. Most parents are also very involved in the school (and several of the teachers/staff have kids at the school) which helps create a true sense of community. As the saying goes, "it takes a village to raise a child" and our family is extremely grateful that our village is the CLASS Academy community.
