Whenever I travel for work, I make it a point to stop by a local bookstore. Over the weekend I visited Becker's Books and it was exactly the kind of place I hope to find on the road. The shop was well organized and absolutely packed with books, one of those places where every shelf feels like it holds a new discovery. The owner was friendly and genuinely helpful, even pointing me in the right direction for locomotive books I was hoping to find. I easily could have spent the entire day browsing, but unfortunately work was calling. If you're a book lover and find yourself nearby, Becker's Books is definitely worth the stop. read more

Walking to Becker's books felt like entering the story itself. The shelves are overflowing with the character and rare findings - it is a dream of a book. I found a vintage edition that I hunted forever! Employees were super kind and helpful, especially Jane, which led me directly to the right section. This place is full of wonders and I can spend hours here. You can get lost wandering about. From the exterior you'd think the space couldn't possibly accommodate as many books as they have. There's so many books and it's all intimately organized. A place for bibliophiles to find refuge. read more

I went looking for a book by a specific author. probably a bad idea if you're looking for something specific. If you're looking for inspiration or to get into reading something new though, they have a massive selection. you could spend hours in here and still not see everything. the prices were more then i would like to pay for a used book but still cheaper than new books. like 6-10 dollars for a used condition book, which can be up to you on what you decide to spend. they also have chairs everywhere so you can sit down but the owners are kind, very hectic, but overall good store. read more

An amazing and wonderful adventure! The place is a maze. Books stacked to the ceiling, endless turns and genres to dive into. The front lady was very welcoming and can take you to a specific genre section you're looking for. A book lover can easily be here for hours. My only disappointment is the book prices. Some can be pretty pricey from $4-$25 for VERY used books. But, you can find some pretty interesting titles. Worth it. Tip: prices are in pencil inside the first few pages of the books. read more

This is the best independent used bookstore in Texas. It's used book collection is comparable to Powell's Books in Portland. We received awesome service and found several older books. I highly recommend! read more

I came to visit this shop while on a business trip to Houston. The shop seems to be housed inside a rather large home. Don't let the location fool you though. This house is packed with what seems like a million books! The shelves are close together and narrow and every free space is seemingly pack with books. I wouldn't call this an ideal configuration for browsing, especially on a first visit, unless you have lots of time available. You should be looking for something specific and begin to learn the order of the store. I walked out with two books only because the shop has an inventory of their stock. It blew my mind that someone took the time and effort to inventory *that* many books but they did. Otherwise I may have found myself empty handed. The staff (family run, maybe?) is very friendly and very willing to help customers locate books. The shop also has a very strong "old book" smell to it. Some people don't like it but I found it welcoming. Yes, we'd all like to see order and organization like a big box store but the sheer quantity/variety of books, the atmosphere, and the fact that everything is inventoried goes a long ways. If I lived in Houston then this would be my book store! A very solid 4/5! read more

I don't know how I've lived in Houston all my life and I'm just now get over to Becker's Books. This house goes on and one, walls, floor to ceiling filled with books. Everytime you think you've hit the end of an aisle, another one begins. The owner sits at the front and wears a smile in Hope's she can help find anything you're looking for. I would be happy to just get lost in the rows and rows of unorganized riches for the soul. You can certainly come looking for something in particular, but you will be hard pressed to find it. Though I did finally complete my search for all the Rabbit Angstrom novels. Come open minded, and just let it all wash over you. Eventually that perfect paper back, hard back, or first edition will find its way into your hand. You can plop down on one of the couches to read for a bit before making up your mind. Everything is well priced, and they have collectables, kids books, or any other used book you can imagine. The owners are great and make you feel as welcome as if this was their house. When I walked into Becker's books I felt like all the books belonged to me and I couldn't leave the place without purchasing a few (most are very cheap). It's a place where you feel like a character in a story lost in all the endless stacks of books! You can feel the presence of each book's previous owners. Some of them have notes left in the front page of the cover- a lot of them were gifts from loved ones. I loved that there is a story beyond the books from the owners of each book. For the person who loves to sit in an armchair and spend hours finding treasures this is your place. There are some paper backs as well but this is for the collector and book lover. We were in town for New Year's Eve and searching for antique/vintage books to help with my genealogy studies. We are 7th generation Houstonians and I struck gold here. The children's section yielded several collectable books I'd been coveting and the art books...don't get me started. If you go, really plan to spend at least and hour or more. You can't see it all in minutes because it just keeps going and going! They also do sell on line. read more

90,000 books in the store, and another 300,000 in their warehouse. Very helpful, but somethings will require searching for, but they are organised very well. They have an online presence as well if you want to check their inventory, they have over 300k books in storehouses. Take your time and definitely take the time to talk to the owner, who's always there. They have some rare books also. I love that this is an old house converted to a bookstore. Take your time exploring as they have every available space with filled with books. read more

They have leather bound classics in the pricier side that are in great shape but also good condition paperbacks for $5 - $15. Left with 9 books for $75 where Barnes and Nobles would have been 3 books for the same price. read more

Love this place! Came here as a little kid with my parents, now I drive myself. It's a neat store converted from a house, so there are rooms and hallways and little niches, all filled with books. It's rather labyrinthian--it makes you feel like you're about to stumble onto a rare book. Most likely you are. The store has a great selection, with everything from poetry to 1930s crime novels. There's so much stuff here I haven't found anywhere else. Angela Carter? Check. Early 1900s mystery writer I've never heard of but turns out wrote some very popular stories? Double check. For the times I've wanted a specific book or author, there is an internet catalogue to quickly check. Still, it's more fun to explore. Anyone who loves books should really check out this store. The owners are very nice and helpful. I have nothing against chain bookstores, but it's awesome to find an independent bookstore that has a fascinating storefront and wonderful stock. This is a really great store. There you will find books with different genres. I like reading very much and have a small library at home, most of my books I bought there. I know that there I will find everything I want, especially I like that they sell the newest publications. The workers are kind and very knowledgeable, it seems that they have read all the books the store suggests. The prices are fine, it is not an expensive place. This is the most amazing bookstore I've ever been to. It has the romantic quality that many modern bookstores don't have. It is packed from ceiling to floor with everything you can imagine, including rarer books and signed copies. I literally got lost briefly. I originally came just for a book signing but ended up staying an hour after just walking around and looking at all the interesting, unique used books they have. Additionally, they have the more popular books and best sellers, but the more bizarre selection is what made this place so interesting. This is now my go-to store. I'm absolutely in love. This is a really cool book store and is a lot bigger then it looks. Me and my wife spent awhile in the store just looking through everything. My only complaint would be that things are a little unorganized and messy. Some books that were priced at a $150 would be in the middle of books that were $15 or $20. Overall it's an awesome store and I will be back quit a bit. read more
