Although there are many menu items available, the focal point here is the carvery. You go up to the serving line and have your choice of four meats. In this case there was roast beef, pork, lamb, and turkey and you get one pass. Then there are five veggies, roast potatoes, and macaroni & cheese. You can make as many trips as you want to these. I had the lamb and you couldn't have asked for better. I also had spinach, carrots, creamed cauliflower, and roast potatoes. Once again, they were done to perfection. Also available were green beans and peas. The incredible part of this was the price. Midweek, the carvery is just GP 7.49 ($9.87)! Where else could you get a meal like this for a price like that? A very good meal at a very good price. If only we had the same in the USA. If visiting the UK, definitely look for a Toby Cavery.

As we hadn't made a booking, we were told the wait would be around 30-40 minutes, but there's a nice bar area to wait in. A large glass of wine and a pint of lager came to around £8, which isn't too bad. After waiting about 20mins, we were called to our table. We opted for the standard Sunday roast, and went to queue up for the carvery. The queue wasn't too long, and it took us less than 10mins to get to the front. (Obviously, I kept my wine with me during this time). The meat portions we were carved did feel a little meagre, but the gammon and pork I opted for were really tasty. You can also load up your plate with as many roasties and veg (there's mash too) as it can take. The potatoes were slightly overdone, but the rest of the veg were great - and I really enjoyed the mint gravy. Just a shame they don't do lamb, eh? We decided to splash out (cause hey, Sunday night) and order dessert too. I chose the profiteroles and they were great - big portion and filled with oozy cream. The only (super minor) niggle was that all the chocolate sauce was at the bottom of the dish. They also had one of those SUPER COOL soft drink machines with lots of flavours. Vanilla Pepsi all the way! A great place for an inexpensive Sunday roast - if you don't mind queuing for a bit to get your food.

All of that for £16 (I think) and it is seriously tasty. The service from the wait staff can be a little slow once you're sat down but the food comes quickly and hot. I always recommend the Lord Northbrook and I've taken visiting friends here for dinner. A beautifully refurbed old boozer now a Gastro pub. Doesn't really get much better. I only give it 4 stars though as the menu selection can be a little limited if you have a picky rate in your midst and they're not the cheapest of venues either. Don't let that put you off though.

It is quite large with a lot of tables so service can be slow when it is busy which seems to be all of the time! If you dont get there at opening times then you will generally have to wait for a table - I have often been told 20 minutes but have had to wait longer. But if you do stay then it is one of the best roast meals you can get. Unlike some other carverys the chef is very generous with his meat and the vegetables are always plentiful. So good decent food at an amazingly low price - jsut get there early!

And the 10-pound round for two pints of ale did give me a bit of sticker shock given this pub's almost-Essex location. I guess it IS located in yummy mummy Wanstead valley, though. All in all, the pub has good food, good booze and plenty of inviting seating areas and a vast beer garden. On my two weekend visits, it's always been buzzing.
