The veggie burger is massive! Topped with a sweet potato, egg, beetroot, and pineapple.

My feelings are mixed when it comes to Beer Deluxe. On the one hand, there are some cool beer pouring from some of their many taps. I love rocking up and seeing things like Boatrocker or Stone on the tap handles. On the other hand, there are some really uncool beer pouring at a venue that calls itself Beer Deluxe. There's a big corporate beer presence here too with Carlton Draught and Lion (Little Creatures is Lion's craft beer label.) Between the indoor and outdoor seating, plus a function space upstairs, there is a lot of room for events. So it's been a hub for beer-y events like Good Beer Week and the Time Out Pub Awards. But somehow it's lacking soul. Unexpected bonus points were earned when I tried their vegetarian burger. I might not be a big meat eater, but I still love some ridiculousness when it comes to comfort pub food. The veggie patty came topped with egg, cheese, sweet potato, tomato, beet root, pineapple and sauce. This was stacked so high I couldn't figure out how to get the whole thing into my mouth at once. Both thrilling and disappointing at the same time! It can be a place to begin or end a night. It's okay for a stop-off, but I prefer to spend the majority of my time in places that have more character.

I actually really love this place. I'm a country girl who was raised around blokey blokes and sports every other day, so I guess Beer Deluxe takes me back to my roots. And my hubby and his mates are all beer drinkers and love trying out the international and imported ale's you'll only find here. It could be described as an upper class bistro or pub. Juicy big burgers and steaks are not for the faint hearted but delicious all the same if you've got the stomach for it! With four areas including a chillaxed coffee/cafe section, bar and restaurant. It gets loud, it gets raucous and I love it!!

This bar, or should I call it a restaurant (I'm not sure because it doesn't feel like a traditional pub, but it is more of a pub than a bar so I guess I will call it a pub), is actually quite large with a restaurant and a burger bar on the second level, two outdoor areas (one facing Flinders Street and another on Fed Square) as well as some seating outside in the auditorium. I used to come here quite regularly because one of the book clubs I was a member of would meet here, that is until their funding was cut, so since then I haven't really been back, except for the time I was with my friend from Adelaide and I wanted to have lunch at one of the restaurants on Fed Square (and this was by far the cheapest). The menu isn't that great, they seem to specialise in burgers, but the burgers are pretty cheap, and not bad either. There is also quite a selection of beers on tap, though they are all craft beers, with a few of the regulars (though I am hesitant to call them old favourites because, well, Carlton Draught has never really been my favourite). Mind you, the outdoor areas are pretty good, and there is also an interesting set up for the Carlton Draught, which seems to use old copper pipes. However, with all of the other great pubs out there, I doubt I will be making regular trips back here.

Beer DeLuxe is one of those bars I never think of going to but when I'm there I wonder why I don't visit more often. Tucked away at the flinders street side of fed square, next door to ACMI, it's spread out over two levels. I personally recommend the street side beer garden, it's huge, lots of nice seating and easy access to the outdoor bar. The beer is obviously a strong point for the bar. Featuring dozens of taps pouring local and international craft beers, there should be something for every taste. The bottle beers available are a little overwhelming - so many delicious options! There are also great cocktails (all the classics) done pretty well. The back bar has a nice range of spirits available. Food is also available, mainly pizza and pub meals but they are all fine for a quick hearty meal with your beers. On certain days throughout the year they also have food trucks come past. All in all its a great pub/bar for after work drinks with large groups. I wouldn't recommend as a date venue but it's great for catchups with mates or a laid back (but nice) drinks with family and friends. Aim to sit outdoors if it's a nice day.

I can confirm that the beer selection is varied, and more importantly... *hic*... It works. The atmosphere is somewhat lacking; the Ionosphere has more. But there are chips.

Location, location, location. That is exactly what Beer Deluxe has going for it. Not only is it situated in the heart of Fed Square, but it also has a huge area with so much outdoor seating. In summer time, irrespective of what kind of establishment you are running, those things are extremely big pulls. As for my personal experience at Beer Deluxe, I don't have too much to go on. They have a number of foreign beers/ premium lagers that you won't find at other more Aussie pubs and bars. Price wise they are fairly expensive but I guess the rent on a such a place is likely to be huge so that's the least you can expect. I found the service to be ok, they were rushed off their feet so it's hard to be critical. I'd definitely go here to meet up in the summer time but in the winter I'd probably avoid it.

Look, I would probably not head to this place if I were already out in the town. But if you are hanging about Federation Square, most likely waiting to meet up with someone, here is a great place to suggest. Beer DeLuxe does a range of (you guessed it) deluxe beers. Being a specialist beer bar, don't go expecting cheap drinks here. If you do want a bit of value for money though, try talking beer with any of the bar staff. All it takes is for you to show little enthusiasm and they will happily talk beer with you for the next 5 minutes all the while giving you free samplers. They are so keen on beer here that they even run 'beer appreciation' courses throughout the year - where for $65 you can try five deluxe beers (of a chosen theme) and matched food to go with it. Either way with about a four page menu of beer I am sure there will be something for any kind of beer enthusiast to enjoy.

A solid spot for beers and pub grub. We shared nachos (tasty) and sliders (all right). I expected more local beers on tap, though.

Skip the cafe area. Coffee was watery and we waited 20 minutes for a toasted sandwich... staff didn't seem to care about making people wait.

Sadly it has never taken off, probably due to the locale. But the beer selection is easily one of the best in Melbourne.

I was hesitant because a German beer hall in Australia didn't sound like it would be very good - but I was wrong. This is a cute beer hall that mimics most München Haus'. It was still early in the day when we came by so it was mostly empty. We sat at a table outside, but with the plastic windows drawn since it was drizzling a little. The server was friendly and gave us good recommendations on food to share. The platter we got was supposed to be for 3-4 people, but with 8 of us not being too hungry, it was perfect for us to all try a little and have something while we drank. The espresso martini was surprisingly good, as well as the Oktoberfest beer that I had. It definitely gave me German beer garden vibes and as someone who is pretty critical because I'm always in Germany, I liked it and would definitely come back.

Service was slow and lacking a general concept of what service is supposed to be. I ordered a wrap which comes with a side of bread (clearly stated on the ordering form). It wasn't a pleasant food experience especially considering that less than 30 minutes after I ate my entire body felt like it was going to explode and I barely made it back to the hotel room. I just recommend you choose another place!

There is quite a large beer garden out the back (though if it didn't have one then calling it the 'Fitzroy Beer Garden' would somehow defeat the purpose). Okay, the beer is a little pricey, however the food certainly isn't, especially the Porthouse Steak for $16.00. That is probably the cheapest steak that I have seen outside of steak night. The inside of the bar is also really impressive, with little objects covering almost all of the wall space.

Was there on Saturday night and it was pretty busy but also fairly laid back, a good mix of types, and no real dickheads. Only issue was that every single person but me seemed to be smoking in the beer garden. Can't wait for the day us non-smokers can claim back some of these great outdoor bar places. Had some tasty pints for around $8, which for a Saturday night is pretty staggering ($8 pint anywhere these days around Melbourne is pretty good). With Forester's Hall now open right across the road having 'beer' in their name also gives some cohesion to this corner of Smith St, and I'm sure we wont be the only ones to start at FBG in the afternoon sun then drift across the road to sample the impressive beer range at FH this summer.
