I've been visiting Beer Deluxe for several years, maybe 2-3 times a year for a semi-regular catchup with some old mates. It's been steadily deteriorating over the last few visits. Beer selection is OK but pricey, but the food the last few visits has been just awful. Today's beer-battered rockling was a new low, more like rock-hard than rockling. Horribly overcooked and dry, and served with chips and selection of pickles (which is just weird). Add to that the hygiene and amenities weren't great. Sticky tables in the outside area and inside a couple of toilet seats were busted. We're really not fussy people but among our crew we've agreed we'll be finding somewhere else for future get-togethers. read more

A great vibe and beverages. It is a little hidden away from Fed Square but worth the find. Our waiter for the afternoon was hilarious and made the visit very memorable. It is a busy little spot and finding a seat can be tricky. The meals were perfect and we can highly recommend the sliders. It is protected well from the weather with umbrellas but enough space for those that prefer the direct sun. My feelings are mixed when it comes to Beer Deluxe. On the one hand, there are some cool beer pouring from some of their many taps. I love rocking up and seeing things like Boatrocker or Stone on the tap handles. On the other hand, there are some really uncool beer pouring at a venue that calls itself Beer Deluxe. There's a big corporate beer presence here too with Carlton Draught and Lion (Little Creatures is Lion's craft beer label.) Between the indoor and outdoor seating, plus a function space upstairs, there is a lot of room for events. So it's been a hub for beer-y events like Good Beer Week and the Time Out Pub Awards. But somehow it's lacking soul. Unexpected bonus points were earned when I tried their vegetarian burger. I might not be a big meat eater, but I still love some ridiculousness when it comes to comfort pub food. The veggie patty came topped with egg, cheese, sweet potato, tomato, beet root, pineapple and sauce. This was stacked so high I couldn't figure out how to get the whole thing into my mouth at once. This bar, or should I call it a restaurant (I'm not sure because it doesn't feel like a traditional pub, but it is more of a pub than a bar so I guess I will call it a pub), is actually quite large with a restaurant and a burger bar on the second level, two outdoor areas (one facing Flinders Street and another on Fed Square) as well as some seating outside in the auditorium. I used to come here quite regularly because one of the book clubs I was a member of would meet here, that is until their funding was cut, so since then I haven't really been back, except for the time I was with my friend from Adelaide and I wanted to have lunch at one of the restaurants on Fed Square (and this was by far the cheapest). The menu isn't that great, they seem to specialise in burgers, but the burgers are pretty cheap, and not bad either. There is also quite a selection of beers on tap, though they are all craft beers, with a few of the regulars (though I am hesitant to call them old favourites because, well, Carlton Draught has never really been my favourite). Mind you, the outdoor areas are pretty good, and there is also an interesting set up for the Carlton Draught, which seems to use old copper pipes. Beer DeLuxe is one of those bars I never think of going to but when I'm there I wonder why I don't visit more often. Tucked away at the flinders street side of fed square, next door to ACMI, it's spread out over two levels. I personally recommend the street side beer garden, it's huge, lots of nice seating and easy access to the outdoor bar. The beer is obviously a strong point for the bar. Featuring dozens of taps pouring local and international craft beers, there should be something for every taste. The bottle beers available are a little overwhelming - so many delicious options! There are also great cocktails (all the classics) done pretty well. The back bar has a nice range of spirits available. Food is also available, mainly pizza and pub meals but they are all fine for a quick hearty meal with your beers. On certain days throughout the year they also have food trucks come past. All in all its a great pub/bar for after work drinks with large groups. I wouldn't recommend as a date venue but it's great for catchups with mates or a laid back (but nice) drinks with family and friends. Aim to sit outdoors if it's a nice day. read more

Location, location, location. That is exactly what Beer Deluxe has going for it. Not only is it situated in the heart of Fed Square, but it also has a huge area with so much outdoor seating. In summer time, irrespective of what kind of establishment you are running, those things are extremely big pulls. As for my personal experience at Beer Deluxe, I don't have too much to go on. They have a number of foreign beers/ premium lagers that you won't find at other more Aussie pubs and bars. Price wise they are fairly expensive but I guess the rent on a such a place is likely to be huge so that's the least you can expect. I found the service to be ok, they were rushed off their feet so it's hard to be critical. I'd definitely go here to meet up in the summer time but in the winter I'd probably avoid it. read more

Being a specialist beer bar, don't go expecting cheap drinks here. If you do want a bit of value for money though, try talking beer with any of the bar staff. All it takes is for you to show little enthusiasm and they will happily talk beer with you for the next 5 minutes all the while giving you free samplers. They are so keen on beer here that they even run 'beer appreciation' courses throughout the year - where for $65 you can try five deluxe beers (of a chosen theme) and matched food to go with it. There were about 10 ales and lagers from around the world on tap (including a couple of very fine IPAs, which I always like trying). And then there's the Beer Bible listing of bottles ready to consume. I didn't even get to that. For the beer connoisseur this is a stop worth making. Check your bank balance first, though. Well its in the name beer deluxe they have a great selection of craft beers to choose from. Seems to be always busy which is a good sign they have seating outside or inside. The outside area has its own mini bar so you don't always have to go inside for a drink. I was entrusted with the responsibility of choosing a place for a group of us to knock back a few on a Tuesday night. Browsing a few venues, this place had me sold as soon as I saw that they had a beer menu so extensive that it is named a "Beer Bible". So, off to Beer DeLuxe we went. Side note: the location is indeed very convenient as a meeting point. I can't comment on the food as we didn't eat, but the beer menu definitely lived up to its mighty title of "Bible". The tap selection rotates, the bottle selection is constant. Seriously AWESOME collection of beers from every corner of the world, some more well known and also many lesser known. And at pretty reasonable prices too. We were all thoroughly impressed by the selection and we commented as such to the bartender. On that note, the bartender was great - we had trouble choosing at one stage, and he instantly pointed to a relatively unknown and well-priced Japanese lager which he personally loved - and sure enough, it was absolutely fantastic. This place is so, so underrated by reviewers all around the web for some reason, perhaps based on decor, atmosphere, service, that sort of thing (none of which I personally found reason to criticise). Forget all that - in my opinion, the beer list totally makes this place. What to say about the 'luxe? It's one of those places that can be oddly, completely empty one Friday evening, and completely mobbed the next Friday. I reckon there is a good chance this is because of the location. I don't really seek this place out but it works very well as a meeting spot in a very central part of the city or a place to pass the time before a gig at the Forum or before dinner somewhere else nearby. The beer selection is decent, with about 10 or 12 taps going, and a big list of what's available in the bottle. They do a pretty good job of having local and import craft beer though sometimes they seem to have a lot of repeats. There's wine and spirits of course, but let's be real, the place has "beer" in the name so you may as well go for the hops here. When they get busy, it can be a harrowing experience to order at the bar as I've seen multiple queues going and taps run out and various other mishaps occurring. I've eaten here a few times and the food is generally serviceable. Some of the mains are a bit overpriced, it's generally a good idea to stick with the pizza, burgers, and entrees unless you're ravenous. The price point for a lot of the food and drink is a bit high, but not out of sync for the area. Generally, the staff do well when they're in the weeds but the design and functionality of the space doesn't really lend itself too well to huge crowds. Half the tables are outside, some in front and some are under cover of the Atrium, with the rest inside near the main bar. The tables generally turn over quickly so if you rock up and can't find a seat just stick it out and a table is bound to vacate soon. I haven't been into the dining room that's upstairs from the main bar so I can't tell you how that is, but it's worth noting anyway as I've met people here that weren't familiar with the place and ended up lost upstairs. read more

Well...I've read the reviews here and have to agree with most of them. This place is all about location-location-location. Being in the heart of the city, when people get hungry, and with "beer" in the name, well, it's a big draw card. I was really looking forward to trying some amazing new beers. So in I went with my three girlfriends...only one of whom is a beer connoisseur like me. The only thing I don't agree with in the reviews is about the service, Arabella must have had a bad waiter. I can't remember the name of our waiter but oh my gosh did this guy know his beers!!! He could tell you about any kind of beer in great detail. I told him some of the beers I like and asked him to just pick a beer for me. The first beer I had was from the 4 Pines Brewery Manly...I had the Kolsch. It was really nice. The second beer I had was Moo Brew, from Tasmania. That was nice too. All in all he did a good job of picking our beers. What didn't impress me was the food...and on top of that, the price we paid for the food that I felt was substandard. We ordered a few little starters to share around. The Buffalo Wings (which are one of my fans) were very disappointing as there really wasn't much flavour in the sauce and even the blue cheese dressing really didn't taste like it was blue cheese. The Albondigas (lamb and almond meatballs), again, just no flavours through it. We also had the trio of dips....again, just not a lot of flavour. Everything just seemed bland, and no, I did not have a head cold. Overall, not a great experience if I were to look at the food side of things....over priced, under delivered on flavour. I only drank beers here, but it turned into a nightly routine. They've got a ton of beers on tap, and even more bottles you can order (if you've got the money, the bottles are pricey). There's loads of outdoor seating, so even when it was packed it felt like I had somewhere I could sit. There's multiple levels, indoor and outdoor areas, and a bunch of different bars inside the complex. It can get busy, so lines for beer can be long, but it seems like the crowd is super friendly so who knows, you might make some new beer friends standing in line. (I did!) With both an indoor and outdoor area it gives you the option of being cramped like sardines indoor or a more relaxing and chilled environment for the outdoor area. Service at the bar was a bit slow, even though there were only 2 or 3 people waiting, and 2 bartenders. Serving a range of classic burgers and what I'm told is a very good range of beer, Beer Deluxe's two-pronged attack on the very competitive Fed Square bar market is a surprisingly successful one for a macho bar in an arty square and I had a relatively good time - for a beer phobe - sitting at its brilliant outdoor seating on an unseasonally hot spring evening. My one qualm? The slightly patronising service, which went a little like this: Me: "I don't feel like a burger, maybe I'll try a dim sum. What's in your dim sums?" Beer Deluxe Representative: "They're dim sums." Me: "Cool, I get that. But what is INSIDE of them?" Beer Deluxe Representative: "Regular dim sum stuff." So I tried a different - but related - tack. The service was absolutely horrible - the waitress/barista/only staff member about did not even acknowledge that we were at the counter face to face with her until after at least a minute when I had to basically poke my face over the register and ask if we were to order at the table or with her. I've been here many times, but frequently forget about on the rare chance an evening out is organised. It now has a bigger focus towards food, or beer food to be more precise, and that's a good thing, given the number of places that do booze only and in turn force masses of people out on the streets to wait in line in hordes to greedily devour fast food. This place has food that is tasty, and largely real; steering away from the mass produced highly processed gunk. There are a lot of options. 30+ food items Excluding the burgers and pizzas menus respectively. It gets busy and crowded but a lot of places do. Another highlight here is drinking respectable beer and none of the backwash almost undrinkable mass popular cookie cutter swill they have in most places. Which means the beer isn't boring. Great options and styles to try to really challenge the dullards and bland boring styles of beer found in many places of Melbourne. read more

I like a place where you have to take your team to read the beer menu. Forget about the food, just pick a style of bear you like (lager, pilsner, stout etc) and then read through the details descriptions. Of course, if you are not one for reading you can always have a chat to one of the bar tenders, explain what you like, and like make some suggestions. I actually don't know of another place in Melbourne that has a better selection. read more

With so many good places nearby I wouldn't choose Beer Deluxe. Food is absolutely not good. As for beer, substantial range but they don't do pints and don't do jugs. So pay pint prices for schooners all night, struggle to find somewhere to sit (even in the day on weekends) and 4 toilets for a 1700 person venue. The live music is a plus, but seriously I'd give it a miss as the tourist trap it is. read more

Sadly it has never taken off, probably due to the locale. But the beer selection is easily one of the best in Melbourne.

This review is purely for the HAWTHORN Beer Deluxe, but since they don't have a page and have deleted my feedback on their facebook page (without any response or acknowledgement) hence forced my hands to write on here! If I could, I'd give them 0 star. ------------------------------- Just came back from a Friday lunch and unfortunately, was not impressed with the level of customer service provided by your staff. I know you've only been in Hawthorn for a week but you have been around long enough to get your sh*t straight. There were 4 of us dining at your establishment and 45 minutes later, one of us was still waiting for a veggie burger. Correct me if I'm wrong but I didn't think a veggie burger would have taken longer than a meat one. When we asked for a staff member to check on this, he rudely replied that he doesn't know when it's coming out and will check with the kitchen. He then proceeded to approach our table armed with our table dockets but mysteriously the veggie burger docket had vanished! I don't know mate, figure it out, maybe someone in the kitchen ate the damn thing?! So naturally, we asked for a refund as us corporate monkeys only have 1 hour for lunch and we had already gone over that allotted hour. 10 minutes later, we were still waiting at our table for the refund of the veggie burger and the staff (probably the manager as he was not dressed in the usual uniform as the other staff) that promised the money just went about his day serving all the other customers and ignoring us. Finally, we had enough and stood in front of the register trying to flag somebody down to complete the refund. Rude employee feigns ignorance and tries to play it like he had no idea what was going on. It's $14 not $400! A little bit more attentive customer service wouldn't have hurt anyone, that's all we asked for. read more

Excellent little pub, went through the day, such a broad selection of local/national/international craft beers and very friendly staff.
