Stop 1: Utica Covered Bridge, 7720 Utica Rd, Thurmont, MD Drive 11 minutes to Stop 2. Stop 2: Loys Station Covered Bridge, Old Frederick Road, Rocky Ridge, MD Drive 9 minutes to Stop 3. Stop 3: Roddy Road Covered Bridge, Roddy Road, Thurmont, MD On the way from Stop 2 to Stop 3, you navigate through a quiet residential neighborhood where practically all of the homes decorate for Christmas so going around that time of year you get to catch the decor. There's plenty of parking, covered benches, grassy areas to walk dogs, and opportunities to see the bridge up close. Because it's an active road, the occasional car does pass through. The structure is in great condition and the ground is solid. There's a signpost explaining its history and a creek below. Expect to spend no more than 15-20 minutes unless you plan to have a meal on the benches or have dawdling kids. Come earlier in the day than dusk to get a better experience!

Located just off US-15, the Catoctin Furnace (also known as Catoctin Iron Furnace) is a historic…read moreiron forge. Only the smelting blast furnace remains and the forge is long gone. Catoctin Furnace was constructed in 1774 by four brothers Thomas, Baker, Roger and James Johnson to produce pig iron from locally mined hematite. In blast by 1776, the furnace provided ammunition (cannonballs) for the American Revolutionary War. Ultimately, three furnaces were built at the site, each named for the site. The first Catoctin Furnace was rebuilt a short distance away in 1787. The second, named Isabella was built in the 1850s by Jacob Kunkel (references give dates from 1853 to 1867). It still stands, within Cunningham Falls State Park. In 1973, the Catoctin Furnace Historical Society, Inc. was formed by G. Eugene Anderson, Clement E. Gardiner, J. Franklin Mentzer, and Earl M. Shankle to "foster and promote the restoration of the Catoctin Furnace Historic District...and to maintain the same exclusively for educational and scientific purposes...to exhibit to coming generations our heritage of the past..." The Catoctin Furnace Historical Society, Inc., celebrates, studies, and preserves the rich history of this pre-revolutionary industrial village, including the architecture, cultural landscapes, lifeways, and foodways of the workers. This is a nice stop just off the highway for a bit of industrial era and Revolutionary War history. Several captions adorn the site pointing out the important parts. Our guide was well informed and we learned about the many unique German customs families kept in 18th century Washington County. It was a cold day and the house was not warm, but we weren't surprised. We all live in old houses ourselves. They're drafty! This is a gem of a museum right next door to our crown jewel, the Wash. Co. Museum of Fine Arts in the City Park.

The gardens are stunning and the mansion is an absolute gem. You cannot beat the beauty. We unfortunately had a very bad experience with the staff. It has been one year since my wedding and it has taken an entire year to write this. Proceed with caution. I want to remember the good parts of my wedding and this an honest review after 365 days to process this all. 1- On the wedding day, we arrived to the venue. The parking lot was roped off so no bridal party members or groomsmen could park their vehicles. 2- The table rental company (on their preferred list) was in the side driveway without room for any other vendors to park. 3- We were directed to WAIT to enter the building on our paid time that they approved beforehand. Esther informed us that we needed to wait until their staff arrived....during the time that was PAID FOR! and approved! This caused our schedule to be delayed and we could not get ready. 4- Staff are incredibly rude to guests, to the bridal party, and made up rules that were not listed in the contract. OPPOSITE of what was discussed in the walkthrough with Jessica. For example, putting a picture frame of a photo of my family member that is no longer with us on the piano was prohibited by Esther but discussed and approved in our walkthrough with Jessica. PLEASE BE WARNED : You will get a different person on the day of the event. The whole event was discussed with Jessica, but Esther was there when we arrived and it was our first time even meeting her. She knew nothing about what was discussed in the walkthrough and she makes up rules not in the contract. Esther walked around as if she was a guest, helping herself to food and drinks. This is NOT in the contract either. Had they informed us in the contract (or even had the courtesy to ask) we would have accounted for it in our budget - nowhere was this mentioned. Another warning: Our ceremony was filmed and staff will leave the fountain going so you cannot hear anything from our vows/ceremony. The ceremony was almost finished when they finally turned off the fountain. The personalized vows to each other are lost forever because it cannot be heard over the fountain. 5. "No visible garbage cans" became a new rule (not listed on their contract). Guests could not see where to dispose of the drinkware. Also, indoors, they will not allow you to use the wastebaskets they have in any of the rooms. You cannot use anything in the rooms and you do NOT have access to all of the rooms. They prohibited my grandparent (also my flower girl) from getting ready in a room downstairs. We had approval from Jessica beforehand to use the room - again, you will get the opposite of what is discussed in the walkthrough. They claim they are "handicap accessible" but they do not accommodate elderly grandparents on the ground rooms to get ready without extreme difficulty. 6. Staff locked the mansion before the contracted time was over. This was time that was paid in advance for. They also did not leave any lights on in the parking lot during our contracted time. Our vendors cleaned up in the dark while staff watched in their vehicles. Please be warned. The beauty of the mansion and the grounds come with a sacrifice. The old reviews still stand. Take my experience as a warning and address everything beforehand.

There are lots of flowers and green plants, so you don't need to bring any ceremony decorations. We had dinner and dancing under the tent, and took a lot of our pictures down the hill in their garden. It's really an incredible spot for photos. The rental fee is only for 7 hours and you have to add additional hours for set up and clean up. The rental fee does include a lighted tent, which was a huge bonus. That makes it quite comparable in cost to the county rental properties in VA and MD (which are relatively *cheap* compared to other venues), but it's such a nicer place! And it's much cheaper than other beautiful venues in the area - I did a lot of comparing. Patsy, the day of help (she's not really your Day of Coordinator, but helps with keeping things on schedule, lining people up, etc.) was great. She did an awesome job talking us through our rehearsal, which we had to do under the tent because it was pouring rain the day before the wedding. It's best to call them to get a response - email communication was sporadic. And book early - we booked 13 months in advance and there was only 1 Saturday slot in September left!

A beautiful campus to visit for civil right history Storer…read moreCollege campus is located about 1/2 mile away from the lower town of Harpers Ferry. There is a lot of history here. It was founded in 1867 to educate freed slaves and later hosted the 1906 Niagara Movement meeting that helped lead to the NAACP. The college closed in 1955, but the old campus buildings remain and are now used by the National Park Service. The campus sits up on Camp Hill, above the lower town of Harpers Ferry. It's just a few minutes' drive from the shops and museums below, and there is parking by the buildings. It is much easier parking here than trying to squeeze into the lower town lots. I think the entire campus is one of those places that feels quiet but full of meaning. Walking around the grounds, we enjoyed the views as the buildings still look to be in good condition. If you're visiting Harpers Ferry, it's worth the short trip up the hill just to stand where so much of the struggle for education and civil rights once happened but be aware that if you want more information you may be better served to go to the museum in the lower town or research on your phone as there are not a lot of informational displays around the campus and the museum seems to have a lot more data on the site.

I've been to two events here in the last few months and I hope the owner extends this space beyond July as their website states. What started as a burned-down building in need of repair was turned into an amazing outdoor space that feels natural, intimate and inviting for small events. From comedy to poetry readings, yoga, to art - this space is really special and if you're in the Frederick area it's worth checking out. There's plenty of free or low-cost parking nearby and it's also around the corner from great restaurants and Carroll Creek so the location couldn't be better.
