I have been leasing a horse from Skye for 11 years, and have always been happy. Leasers by contract are supposed to pick hooves and tack by their self, but when Skye found out that I get dizzy when I bend over she ordered me not to pick hooves. For 11 years Marcus and Eric have been doing it for me, and after I broke my collarbone last year Marcus saddles for me when I need it. And their horses are well trained. Friday some jerk pulled so hard on Ginger's head that he broke the reins! She sat down instead of throwing him off. 2 days later I rode her in her halter and no bridle and she was a doll. I'm always amazed at the patients they have with beginners and even unruly clients, and over 11 years I've seen some dillies. read more

An unforgettable horseback riding experience. I first heard about this place on Groupon, where I stumbled upon a couples promotion for a 30 minute instruction, followed by a 30 minute ride. Skye - the owner- was super friendly in both responding and booking (and even helped us to avoid the same day booking fee). Marcus - the person in charge on site - was a self-proclaimed character. The day of the ride: we arrived in Pflugerville, to the bmx arena. Bella Peregrina is located in a nondescript horse trailer on the field next to the arena (kinda easy to miss it at first). Plenty of parking in the arena. You can't miss the horses hitched to the trailer though. I'm happy to report that they are well maintained, happy, non-smelly horses. Some (especially Prince) were even kinda sassy. All the staff were very welcoming and direct in their communication with us. They initiated the class, paired us with our horses, then helped us mount them. True to their word, we got a thirty minute safety/intro class, then a thirty minute ride into a trail. We even got our pictures taken! My only qualms with this otherwise awesome experience were that the class did not start on time (maybe twenty minutes late), and that the class was conducted in a standup, informal fashion under the blazing Texas sun. It had been 15 years since I'd actually climbed into a saddle and decided to take myself a good long ride. Any one that rides horses knows, it's like riding a bike, you just never forget. After several tragedies all with an 11 month span, I swore I'd never allow myself to care for another horse as if he were one of my children, or my best friend. It has taken some time to finally reach that level of "My Gods I need to Ride" that is nagging at you to the point of insanity and the Universe put Bella Peregrina Ranch, Skye, Eric and Marcus in my path. And once again, the universe provided what my soul needed most. Amazing people and majestic creatures to begin the healing process. First time visiting the Austin area with my family and I wanted to do something special for my two oldest children. I found Bella Peregrina Ranch on Groupon and decided to give them a try. After purchasing the Groupon, I followed the instructions, which were super simple, and made a reservation. Skye was very attentive and responded promptly to my emails. She made the reservation process very smooth and I felt comfortable from the beginning. When arriving to the ranch, we were greeted at the end of the road by a horse and caretaker, Sally, which we exchanged greetings after we parked. Sally was wonderful with my children. She spent the time to help my children understand the importance of safety and how powerful horses really are. I was learning so much more than I even understood about horses and I was just there to enjoy watching my kids ride. Sally took the time to get my 5 year old son out of his "shell" since this was his first time with horses and you could tell that he was slightly nervous in the beginning. My daughter, which is 12, just loved Sally and hasn't stopped asking me to move the entire family to Austin so that she can work with Sally and the horses. I really appreciate the Bella Peregrina Ranch, Skye and Sally, for making such a great experience in Austin, even better for my children. They had a great time and when we come back in the near future, we will definitely be contacting you all! It was my girlfriend's birthday and she did horseback riding regularly when she was little, so I decided to book an hour trail ride session in the Pflugerville location. Skye was very friendly when discussing prices over email. The Pflugerville location is what I would describe as a satellite location; the horse trailer was in a field next to a public park. That made me wonder if it would be a real 'trail' ride, or just walking around in a field. Luckily there was indeed a nice trail. Marcus is my guy. I was extremely (irrationally) nervous about my first time riding, just because I'm always high anxiety, but Marcus helped me ease into it and I ended up having a very enjoyable experience. We had an awesome time! We took my daughter for her 8th birthday as it was her favorite activity. Marcus did a great job giving us a personalized treatment. Today my bestie and I did a trail ride with Bella Peregrina, location offsite of the ranch, which was much closer as both of us reside in South Austin, just a fast trip up 35, easy directions. We arrived a little early and were greeted by Marcus,who was very courteous and friendly. There was also another staff member/trainer thee but I didn't catch her name as I was mesmerized by the horses.The horses were lined up by the trailer, all relaxed and beautiful. Very well cared for and obviously very fond of the trainers. After a nice conversation to engage my level of comfort with a horse and a little history of the beautiful animal I would be with on my adventure, Marcus took the time to really work with a child who had never touched a horse, making both the helicopter mother and child very comfortable. Once mounted and ready to go we hit the trail, across a well kept field, into the wooded area, and back around. During the ride Marcus kept a solid eye on the child, making this a great experience for a first time rider, but always engage both myself and friend to make sure we were having a nice time, very personable with great instructions given as needed and to make the ride more pleasant for both rider and horse. After the end of the ride we stayed to pet the horses and chat some more, very knowledgeable staff. Before even leaving both my friend and I have decided on purchasing a package of lesson, as the experience was great. Rented two ponies for an hour of pony rides for my daughters birthday over the weekend. If you make it through the massive legal contract and the one word responses to phone calls via email and book with them, here's what to expect: Pro: They will show up on time and be available to ride for the full time. Skye's staff people were nice. Cons: They will spring it on you at the last minute they YOU need to lift all the kids on and off they ponies so that they don't throw out their backs. I was shocked and didn't get to socialize with my guests, plus I got the sore back. They also didn't tell me in advance about a fee to use credit card (I would have paid cash). Lastly, they didn't pick up the horse poop as promised. I got to do that too. Would not recommend obviously. read more

On a beautiful and sunny Saturday in Austin - all seemed perfectly well - who knew life could get better when we arrived at Bella Peregrina Ranch? We rode horses for the first time, celebrated a birthday, and the location is even within 20 minutes of the UT Austin campus. Our 1 hour lesson was split into a 30 minute horse-sense lesson and a 30 minute trail ride. I'm not a horse expert, but I'm an ordinary person. The key points I want to discuss is what makes Bella Peregrina Ranch different: the people, their philosophy, and the horses. --The People-- The team there includes: Skye, Eric, and Marcus. They are all experts in interacting with horses. For example, I was in awe when Skye briefly mentioned she had started riding horses at age four. Eric and Marcus are both programmers and taught us how riding horses is a great activity to do outside of coding. Skye is a wise woman who is well-versed in English, music, and law. Skye even quoted from "Gulliver's Travels" in our lesson. The whole team taught us how understanding horses is very similar to understanding people. Most of all what makes these three people different, aside from their 70+ years of combined experience, is that it's really easy to see how much they love their horses. Some people don't even treat their children that well. --The Philosophy-- Skye started our 1 hour encounter discussing the main difference between being a boss and being a leader and how someone rides a horse can tell you much about the person. Marcus even personality described my smaller friend quite accurately after briefly helping her onto her horse. Then, Skye taught us something super insightful. She told us what the horses fears were and what our (human) fears were when riding. That's genius. I think understanding each other's fears, really brought down barriers between us and the horses (helpful in preventing getting face-kicked by a horse). Overall,Skye wanted to make the experiences safe and fun for us and the horses. --The Horses-- All of the horses were in fantastic health. They looked happy, well-groomed, well-fed, and strong. I loved riding on Taliyah. Taliyah was bred to be a race horse but wanted to be a trail horse instead. Fortunately, Skye and her team rescued Tailyah from a white cubicle, suite and tie, and a high-stress life of a race horse. Skye placed my most timid friend on Mirage. Mirage is the tamest and kindest horse I've ever met. Mirage gently and patiently waited for my friend to get on. My taller friend rode on the strong Belle - who looked very healthy. My gentle friend, rode on Lion Queen - a beautiful spotted horse. Once we hopped on a ladder and slid onto the horse's saddles, the ride began. We first learned how to break (stop) on a horse. We said "WOAH" while pulling the reigns towards our waist. We said "WALK" while criss-crossing our legs to get the horses to start walking. We pulled our right and left hands to get the horses to change directions. The horses were very well behaved, sweet, and good listeners. --Who Should Do This-- If you've ever wanted to learn to ride a horse. I highly recommend you to do it here if you live near UT Austin/downtown Austin/North Austin. It's hard to beat the team of people who teach here, get a taste of their philosophy, and meet the beautiful horses. This experience was super amazing, and I greatly recommend it to anyone who gets the chance. We went out to Pioneer Farms today for a trail ride with Bella Peregrina Ranch based on a friend's recommendation who leases a horse from them. There were 5 of us for the first half and then just my daughter (14), the trail ride leader, and myself for the last half. The other group had a younger girl who ended up being afraid of her horse and wanted to turn back. The horse itself was docile, but I think she may have had a prior experience that caused her some fear of the situation. We turned around, and they quickly got her set up with a ground crew staff member who walked with her leading the horse and helping her overcome her anxiety. After we were done, he even took the time to try to teach her a little something about how to halt the horse a special way -- beyond what they initially showed us/demonstrated. We rode around the historic houses and heard some stories about the farm and the background of the buildings during the last half of the tour. It was entertaining as well as educational on a couple of different levels. I'm a novice at horse riding but felt comfortable and felt like I learned something about the best way to control/guide the horse. Just let them know your comfort level with riding. It was also nice to know that they have a fairly high weight restriction. The horse I was riding could carry up to 400 pounds. read more

The negative reviews are misleading. Professional and knowledgable, Marcus made our experience so pleasant!!! It was so obvious to me that Marcus loves the horses and teaching others how to care for them and ride them. I brought my two daughters (10 and 8 yrs old) to take lessons and ride horses for the first time. We were all a little nervous but were quickly put at ease. At one point, my 8 yr old got scared and upset. Marcus walked alongside her, talked her through everything and helped her feel safe. He was so kind!! That helped my momma heart as I was on a horse in front and couldn't really do anything to help her. He stayed with her as long as she needed him, continuing to teach her until she was comfortable to be on her own. We learned a lot and made some very sweet memories. Contrary to what you may read in the other reviews, this family is kind, courteous, experienced and focused on you learning and having a good time. The whole process (purchasing, scheduling and riding) was easy and supported. Skye was prompt in answering my emails and flexible in the scheduling. The groupon excuse is no good-as a business owner if you want to issue someone a refund it's very simple-you simply get with customer and give them their money back. Since this hasn't happened one would assume you do not want to give me my money back. You cannot tell someone what other customers will testify to, as you are not them. Nevertheless, I have no problem stating that I was wobbly after falling from a large animal to the ground-who wouldn't be? Differentiating between falling off and being thrown doesn't really help your case. I'm not sure where you are getting your information from but I hit the ground once, not twice (and I don't know why you would admit to that anyways it just makes your horses look worse?!). We were out of your view when this occurred so obviously you have no say in how I was thrown nor how many times. In regards to abuse-you should look up the definition of that word, this is a review to help others make informed safe choices when choosing a business to trail ride with. Lastly, as stated in my initial review, I did not blame the horses. As I stated before, a horse used for trail riding should not throw nor allow a rider to "fall off" as you say. Since most persons who choose to pay someone to ride do not own their own horses/are beginners/do not ride all the time, they are going to make mistakes. A horse used for this purpose should be able to compensate for these mistakes without causing harm to the rider. To clarify-the horses should be properly trained by YOU. The "blame", or a more accurate wording in my opinion-the reason for this negative review, is the lack of professionalism you and your "staff" portray when conducting business. read more

Nov. 21 when we left we did say we would reschedule, but this was prior to me doing more research on your ranch Monday Nov. 23 after this incident which is in my first review. I also did more on the morning of Nov. 25th. I called San Gabriel park again an was told horseback riding was not allowed in the park. They do have an indoor show barn & outside arena area that you must get permission to use and pay a fees. Williamson County parks and rec. handles request for the inside/rodeo area in the San Gabriel park. The Sheriff Posse handles the outside arena who I called as well and they know nothing of you either!! You cannot just go taking and riding horses on their parks ground. I also called Old settlers park again and they let me know you came a few times earlier this year but they kept having issues with you so they decided to not allow horseback riding in the park anymore. The staff also confirmed when they allowed this you had to have a permit; which you must go through the city for. They also let me know yours was expired again, it was so long ago they could not remember the month it ended. Also they are doing construction and after it is complete they are still not allowing it in the park (its over). So how could this not be a scam when first your permit was expired. Then your two trainers unloaded horses onto the side of Round Rock Express parking lot which was trespassing on the day of the incident. So with this being said where is our refund. You don't have any documentation showing you have permission to bring horses in either park, they both confirmed the parks are not horse friendly. Marcus didn't even have proof when he told the president of Round Rock Express you all had a permit for the park on the day of the incident, and we never mounted the horses. This is bad business and poor integrity and character on your part!! After finding out this type of info do you really think I or anyone else would reschedule with you. People please again do research before giving money for horseback riding lessons!! Also call the place before hand to verify info that people are claiming to be true. DO NOT USE for horse transport. They showed up in an old trailer, not what I was told. They told me my horse would not be on the trailer more than 6 hours, which I thought I was awesome. The barn they dropped my horse off told me he didn't arrive until that night... 12 hours later!!! She said they were extremely rude to her and didn't even pull the trailer to the barn but at 11:30 pm, dropped my horse and things off at the front gate. The people who assisted with the lesson obviously care about horses, but the horses appeared not well cared for. Several were underweight and at least 2 that I could see had severely matted tails. When I emailed Skye about this, she provided a stock response apologizing that it was not a good fit for me. I understand that caring for horses is expensive and that people can have good intentions; although, I also feel that this business is sacrificing quality for quantity and perhaps have more horses than they can adequately care for. I went with a group recently for riding lessons at their Rockdale location. The first 30 minutes were the instructors talking to us. It would have been nice to get that instruction in some shaded area, but there was no shade and it was extremely too hot to have a group outside just talking for 30 minutes. They remind you that they do not provide loaner helmets, even their website says this (though I have never been to a location where I rode horses that did not have helmets). They remind you that if you decide to ride without a helmet and if some injury occurs, your insurance won't cover this. I'm giving this review 2 stars because of the nice service Marcus and the other gentleman gave us while on our trail ride. Though it is 2 stars because upon entering the location, you have no idea this is a legitimate business. There are several horses out in the pasture that look unhealthy which concerned some of the group from the beginning. A couple of the horses we did ride looked to be old and one had lesions on it's leg. When several of us needed to go to the bathroom, you need to step inside a mobile home which is absolutely filthy and unsanitary, in the bathroom itself behind the toilet is a roach catcher. As a business, you should expect people might have to go to the bathroom, please keep that area clean. Impressions are so important. There were several in the group that didn't show up, and per their policy, even though they knew ahead of time that several would not come, there are no refunds, but a credit to come back. Again, with some of the horse conditions, and the unsanitary conditions inside the home, no one wants to go back. This is a business after all, so all things need to be considered. Please consider having a shaded patio area where customers don't get overheated listening to instructions, and have employees dress professionally and please have a clean bathroom. read more

If you use this woman as a transporter let it be known that if she tells you that she will deliver on Monday then look for her on Tuesday, or Wednesday, and she will make up every excuse in the book as to why she can't be there on time. She is very rude and cusses like a sailor if you upset her in any way. She goes out of her way to be as difficult as possible as she can be, and really knows how to play the drama queen. She also has no problem lying as she was caught in too many to count. She is very unprofessional but yet at the same time claims she has been doing this for many years I find it hard to believe that anybody still uses her. Plus the way she treats her employees is deplorable she treats them like they are garbage. The way she was cussing her employee out was horrible she was just screaming, and cussing at him so bad you could hear her a half a mile down the road almost. After deciding to get away from the kiddos one weekend I reached out to Skye with Bella Peregrina Ranch to inquire about their Groupon ad. I found the basic information they wanted from their website and after shooting off an email I was impressed with the quick response (within a couple of hours) and how flexible their scheduling was. I had been around horses before - but was a beginner rider - mainly trail rides with a few lessons as a child. I chose a two hour trail ride and from the very start my experience was unlike every other trail ride I had ever been on! They began by asking what I wanted to do... I'm sure I had quite the deer-in-the-headlight look, so they explained that they had different horses with different personalities and that they wanted to make sure I had a great time. They matched me perfectly with a sweet mare and were open to varying speed levels and trail paths ... the important thing they told me was that the rider and the horse were both safe - anything within those parameters was open! It was an awesome experience to ride in Old Settlers Park and very family friendly. Now I meet to ride with them as often as I can convince my husband to watch the kids and I have loved each and every minute. I wanted to get my daughter a horse ride to celebrate her 10th birthday. I made communication by phone was provided an email address to send my daughters name and selected time/date to ride. I arrived onsite early to ensure all necessary paperwork was completed. Skye was very unprofessional. She was rude and her body language said it all. She raised her ride price and disappointed my daughter and myself by asking us to come back at a later time. She focused more on how we didn't make the reservation correctly although she never communicated that clearly. I decided this was not the person I wanted my daughter to share that experience with! I found another person who fulfilled my daughters experience in riding and although I spent more it was worth every penny then to be treated so poorly by Skye. She should really learn better customer service. I would never recommend this business to anyone. read more
