When I was in town for a blood donation, I decided to visit Belly Up BBQ as a way to both replenish my iron levels and try a new-to-me restaurant. There was a small surge of BBQ places in Halifax in the 2010s, and while that eventually died down, it's good to see the trend spread elsewhere to add new kinds of cuisine to other areas of the province. The interior is spacious, with a bar at one end, a section with several booths, and even more tables beyond that. The décor isn't over-the-top with southern US kitsch like many barbecue joints and could easily pass for a regular bar and grill. Normally when I try a BBQ place for a first time, I go all-in on a sampler platter to try as many of the smoked meats as possible. Alas, Belly Up is the only BBQ place that I've been to that doesn't have this option. As a result, I went with the beef brisket platter since that's more unique to Belly Up, and things like ribs and pulled pork can be found at many restaurants these days. It wasn't too too busy when I arrived and most people were already eating, so my food arrived in quick order. The brisket came as two long, thick slices, and the broad layer of fat on top told me I was getting the fatty end of the brisket. There was a bit of a smoke ring around the edges, although I didn't find that it had a prominently smoky flavour. It was spot-on for tenderness though - the meat broke apart easily, but didn't crumble from being overcooked, and each bite was tender and juicy. You get a choice of a few different sauces with your meat (which is served entirely on the side) and the chipotle sauce was savoury and not *too* sweet, but again, I'd prefer a heavier level of smokiness from the namesake pepper. You get two different sides with each entrée, so again I went with some of the more unique options - the corn fritters and the apple coleslaw. The corn fritters were very well executed - crisp on the outside, fluffy and moist on the inside, and with a hint of sweetness. The ginger and jalapeno honey sauce that came with them was also a surprise hit, with a good balance of sweetness and subtle layer of heat. I generally prefer a vinegar-based dressing for my coleslaw to cut through the rich dishes that it's often paired with, but I still enjoyed Belly Up's apple slaw. The additional crunch and sweetness of the julienned apples brought some complexity to what is often the most forgettable part of a meal, and honestly it's just nice to see a slaw that's done in-house instead of coming out of a five-gallon bucket from Sysco. Service was friendly and attentive throughout my meal. There's definitely some tweaks that Belly Up could do to polish their BBQ game, but it's a still a solid option for something different in the food scene in Truro. read more

We ordered French Dip sandwiches and Poutine and both were absolutely delicious! In fact, I can say it was the best French Dip sandwich I've ever had. The meat was lean, the roll was fresh and soft, and the au jus was perfect. . it wasn't watered down nor was it so salty that you were thirsty the rest of the evening. After driving by this place in my hometown probably a million times over the years we finally decided to go in and give it a whirl. Six of us went out for my wife's birthday and we were not disappointed. We we're seated immediately and placed a very large order. Our waitress was on her game totally and was always there when our drinks needed a refill. Our meal arrived in a decent amount of time and it was totally delicious. The only complaint I have was that the burnt ends were a little overdone and tough but all of the other items were cooked to Perfection. We had everything from pasta to poutine to pulled pork and chicken wings and a few other items as well. The smoked mac and cheese is the bomb..just saying. Went there with 4 people in the party. Potato skins were good. Burger platter was good. But the chicken wings looked pinkish after eating 5. Had 5 left that looked pink. Waitress told us we would get the wings off our bill. She came back with 15 % off, $2.10 off on a cost of $13.99. And they said the wings were not pink, they were cooked. But we could not get the 5 wings back to take home and cook the more, because the owner picked them apart to prove they were not pink. So we lost out on over $12 and only ate 5 out of the 10 wings. So paid $12 plus tax for 5 wings... what a deal. So no going back here. They handled the situation wrong. Should have been minimum of 50% off read more

I like coming here the smoked wings are awesome. Decent price and service is friendly and overall pretty good. The only recommendation is the music Thursday night. The musician is very good and plays a good mix but is a little loud every week. I like loud music but it's a little too loud for a dinner and hang out. read more

My fiancé and I had lunch at The Belly Up yesterday! The food wasn't the best we've had there; as the fish was over cooked and that order came with cold fries! Needless to say it went back, and the second order was great! We really want to give praise to The Server, She was/is outstanding (her name is Heather) When we walked in there had to be 35 to 40 customers and little Heather was running her ass off, and I do mean running! No one left, and no one complained, Heather was keeping everyone happy, while delivering to her tables, she was even stopping at yours while running by, just to apologize for the delay! We never went there for the food, even though it's a BBQ & Grill, we went for the entertainment at night. They host bands on the weekends and it's enjoyable. If you're 20 and looking for heart pounding dance music, this isn't the place for you. If you're into great bands with great music and friendly service without the rowdiness of other bars, then this is definitely for you. read more

This place has the chance to be a great grill and smokehouse and it's failing. The rib steak is too thin, the smoked brisket was dry ( because it was old or over done, not sure) and the service was not up to par. I shouldn't have to get up and ask for a beer or a dipping sauce. The food is barely okay and the service is 5-10% tipping worthy. Cooking and service needs big improvement. Sad to see great potential of this place go to waste. If the menu says choice of dipping sauce, ask me what kind, don't assume. read more
